Here's a picture:

marina

The marina has two entrances, North & South. Naturally, I take the north entrance in a northerly wind. My boat is on the north end of my dock. When the wind is coming from the south (opposite the wind in the picture) then I cruise down the channel under sail and round up into my slip. I find this to be very easy.

When the wind is from the north, I usually drop the main at the entrance of the breakwater and come in under bare poles. The only time this is tricky is when there's some medium-to-hefty wind. When I have crew to steer the boat down the channel, I have no trouble dousing the main by going forward to the mast. The trouble comes when I'm single-handing and by the time I get started on the main my boat is about to crash into something (usually the most expensive boat in the marina -- my boat's got a real knack for that) and I have to go back to steer. It also seems like a poor show of seamanship to veer around the channel as I move back and forth from the mast to the cockpit.
