“You cannot believe that this is a good thing to be going on,” Mick ranted as he shook his head back and forth while pacing. Adrian watched the man and knew that he was just worried. It was natural, but he had to get over the shock and quickly. Michael and Nikita weren’t far from the kitchen and could hear everything that was going on in the kitchen. “She isn’t ready to deal with that kind of change… she needs to be around us.”
“I understand the decision…” Jurgen chimed in as he looked at the room, relieved that it was just himself and Adrian. Walter and Belinda had congratulated Michael and Nikita and decided to get a night out of the house before the house emptied out some.
“I don’t,” Mick snapped as he shook his head and rubbed his neck. “My Popsicle has been through hell… she hasn’t even started to talk about anything that she has remembered… she says that she remembers those things but she hasn’t said much of anything to indicate that she truly does remember what those things are.”
Adrian was concerned about the decision on different levels. It was natural for Michael and Nikita to seek time alone. They needed the space as they were trying to figure out their relationship and to find what was next for them. Adrian was more concerned about the fact that Madeline hadn’t been over to talk to Nikita yet, something that Nikita indicated that she needed. Adrian was also very concerned with the distance of the condo. If it had been closer, Adrian would be getting Mick to calm down instantly. But it was as if Michael sought out a place as far away from here as possible.
“This isn’t just about Nikita,” Jurgen pointed out as he looked at Mick as he was breaking into a sweat being so worried and upset about this. “I heard about Michael Samuelle before his accident… he was intensely private… this fits his style.”
“Then he shouldn’t drag Nikita into that style. She needs friends… she doesn’t have any family so she needs us to be her family,” Mick did not relent from his decision about this. “She is trying to help Michael get his memories back… there is a reason why you do that in a group setting… so you have the support of others.”
Adrian groaned as she couldn’t take this any longer. This was not being productive. “Mick, Nikita did a wonderful job with Michael by herself. She was much more effective.”
“You weren’t there,” Mick shouted as he turned and sat in the chair. He rubbed his head. “Paul used her… played her like a fiddle at times… I held her when she would just fall apart… and when she falls apart, she falls apart hard. Michael isn’t ready for that.”
“You aren’t giving Michael enough credit,” Adrian countered as she did not believe for a second that Michael wouldn’t know what to do for Nikita. He had known what to do for Nikita, more than anyone else. If she hadn’t been there, she did not doubt that Michael would have found a way to combat what was going on.
“What if she has a nightmare? She gets stuck into one like she was before? So stuck that he can’t get her out? It’s not like there is anyone there that he can call too. He needs to stay with her so how does he call for help? Hell, look how far away they are going to be!” Mick declared angrily as he just didn’t think that Adrian just got how bad it was when Nikita first started to go down that slope.
“And you expect them to stay with other adults the rest of their lives?” Adrian fired back as she was sick of this. She hated that Michael and Nikita were probably hearing all of this. She was happy for them. This is what they needed to do. “Mick, I know that you were here for them… and it’s scary…”
“It’s not scary… it’s dangerous!”
“Has Nikita shown any bad signs?” Adrian softly spoke as she did not raise her voice any further to Mick. A shouting match would do no good.
Mick continued as he stood up and started to pace again. “She hasn’t opened up about what she remembers….”
“She is coming to terms with it first… some people need to process this internally… and who knows what Michael and Nikita are talking about when they are alone,” Adrian wished that Mick was listening to her. She did not want to attack him and what he is doing. Not all of this was about Michael and Nikita.
“Look,” Jurgen interrupted as he stood in front of Mick and stopped his pacing. “Us arguing is not going to get them to change their minds. They look very happy about the decision and we should find a way to support them.”
“Support something that is dumb? This is dangerous! This can be very very bad!” Mick pushed at Jurgen. Adrian stepped forward and touched his shoulder. “You are still needed, Mick. Nikita is still going to need you.”
Mick seemed to deflate some when Adrian spoke to what he was feeling and how this was changing his way. “You are struggling with what is going to happen with you now.”
“I’m regretting that I didn’t catch what was going on with Nikita sooner… that maybe if I had pushed to help her before this… that it wouldn’t have been…” Mick rasped and then closed his eyes, too pained to say what he was thinking. Adrian nudged Jurgen out of the way and pulled Mick into her arms.
“You did a great job, Mick. You opened up doors and paths that I doubt that I would have had. But now you can start thinking about what is next for you,” Adrian pointed out and Jurgen sighed as he jumped up onto the counter and sat down. “Man, it’s scary not knowing exactly what is next… I’m there too….”
“They changed who I was comfortable being,” Mick added as he pulled away from Adrian, more composed now and in the process of calming down. “I wasn’t going to practice again.”
“Do you think some of this is guilt because you are wondering who the next person it is that you are going to help?” Adrian questioned with clarity that it ripped through Mick’s defenses. He groaned and dropped his head. “I don’t know if I want to help anyone else.”
“Maybe you should take this new time that is going to happen and think about it,” Adrian suggested.
“What are you going to do?” Jurgen asked Adrian, wondering if that would help Mick in what was going to happen. Nothing anyone said right now was going to change Michael’s and Nikita’s minds. They were moving.
Adrian slowly grinned and then cleared her throat. “I have plans.”
Jurgen glanced to Mick and Mick gave the same knowing look. She was planning to take Paul down.
“Keep us in the loop of what you are doing,” Jurgen chimed in and Mick nodded his head. “I think that might be a good thing… maybe it will help me find what is next.”
“You have to be Mick,” Adrian pointed out as she was going to let people in when it was safe. She wasn’t sure what she was going to do now, but Paul Wolfe was not going to be rid of her so easily. But there was no reason to drag someone else into this fight. “You are still going to have Nikita… and Michael… this isn’t going to be over… it’s just going to be different… no intensive. Not in-house all the time therapy. It shows how good of a job you have done.”
“Nikita did it,” Mick whispered as he looked down the hallway. “I am happy for her… she is clearly in love.”
“Maybe you should try to find that,” Jurgen shrugged his shoulders and Mick looked at Jurgen. “I don’t think that comes around too often.”
