“Here,” Walter declared as he pushed a beer across the table to Jurgen as he sat down at the table. Adrian was there with Mick and the group was silent as they all took time to drink whatever they were drinking. Mick, Walter and Jurgen were all drinking beers and Adrian was sipping at tea. She pushed the tea away and looked at Walter. “Do you have anything stronger?”
“Yep,” Walter nodded his head as he turned and walked to a locked cabinet. “What are you looking for? Vodka? Whisky? Gin?”
“Vodka,” Adrian nodded her head barely and she sighed. “On the rocks… a good bit.”
Walter poured in silence as everyone was taking in the reality of what they all knew. Walter handed the glass over to Adrian and settled back down. “We are sure?”
“Yep,” the mumbles came out from around the table. Mick leaned back and shook his head. “Karl is with her now… we haven’t told her yet.”
“Can we link it to Paul?” Walter inquired and the table looked at each other. Adrian finally shrugged her shoulders. “I’m not sure.”
“Or are you saying that to protect Nikita and Madeline?” Walter asked and he watched as the heads went down around the table. “Shit,” Walter mumbled as he realized that what everyone was indicating was that they couldn’t link this to Paul unless the stories came out from Nikita and Madeline. Neither of those women needed to live with that.
“We can start to deprogram her… it must have been done quickly so hopefully it’s new,” Mick commented after more silence and drinking. Walter looked at his beer and once it was gone, he took the bottle of vodka that he had left out and poured himself some.
“She is so lucky… but it feels as if they wanted to have her survive… maybe this was a test run of something,” Adrian offered as a sick plot that could be happening.
Walter knew that Nikita would come forward and admit to what had happened to her to spare others from getting hurt, but no one wanted her to go through that. If Nikita was going to do something like that, they wanted it to be done because of it being Nikita’s decision.
“Did Birkoff find anything out?” Jurgen questioned as he leaned forward and tipped the beer around, considering a second beer himself.
“She isn’t in the databases that he ran… and he can’t find anyone missing with that first name… no where,” Walter stressed as he rubbed his face.
“Paul may have planted that name,” Adrian warned and Walter narrowed his eyes. “Nah… that woman believes that name and has memories…”
“And Madeline really believes with all of her heart that she wanted to be a mother… but I’ve read her old journals… she didn’t want to be a mother… Paul must have planted that in her before he even started to work on bringing Nikita into the mix,” Adrian revealed and the men around the table groaned. Walter finally shook his head. “Madeline loves her…”
“I think she does… but the motive to bring her in was never caused by Madeline wanting to be a mother. That wasn’t a desire. In fact, Madeline’s journals before she knew Paul indicate that she never wanted to have a child because she thought the world was too screwed up,” Adrian gave Walter more information that supported her theory.
“Shit,” Walter mumbled again as he just couldn’t believe how bad this was getting. “We have to at least tell them what we think Paul is doing.”
“Isn’t Rene taking over Wolfe Institute or something like that?” Jurgen questioned as Mick stood up and retrieved a glass for himself and Jurgen to have vodka instead of another beer. Walter handed the bottle over and nodded his head. “Yeah… most of the control has been seized but Paul doesn’t know about it. Most of the Institute is ran off of grants and Rene is about to cut them off.”
“So if Paul did know about that, it gives him motive to start doing something else,” Adrian pointed out and Walter groaned. Paul moving onto brainwashing smuggled women because he was losing Wolfe Institute. “Michael’s decision to try to take that place down may have caused this?”
“May,” Adrian nodded her head up and down.
“Someone has to be bringing in the women. Paul hasn’t left the States,” Mick pointed out as he looked at Walter. “Is there anyway to put the police onto Paul’s trail without revealing Nikita or Madeline?”
Walter thought about it even as he was shaking his head back and forth. “It sounds all so science fiction that the chief will laugh me out of there again… probably send me back to retirement…”
Walter stopped and leaned his head back. “Although I think I’d rather be retired right now.”
“IF you weren’t, Paul could be getting away with this entirely. You’ll figure out a way,” Adrian made her point to Walter. She did not want Walter to leave this case because he was frustrated. If anyone else figured this out, they wouldn’t care about Madeline or Nikita in this situation. They would exploit Nikita and Madeline.
“I just worry about Paul… what is his next move? If he is in bed with someone doing human trafficking… can he somehow go back after Nikita… or even Madeline..” Walter shook his head while speaking. “Today is supposed to be a good day… Michael and Nikita are moving on with their lives… and now that I’m scared that I let them go.”
Adrian touched Walter’s hand and shook her head. “They have to find a way to have a life now… they are working things out and we can’t have our insecurities about what is going on influence what they are going to do. They’ll be together. Michael is pretty much an army himself.”
“That’s the only reason why I haven’t driven over there and brought them back,” Walter grumbled as he knew that he at least wanted to warn them. “Damn…”
“Anyone got eyes on Paul?” Jurgen asked and Walter shook his head. “And I just worry that there are more bombs that are going to happen… that there is more information that we don’t know about.”
“It’s possible,” Mick commented as he twisted the glass in his hand. “Nikita has remembered a lot but not much about the process… and the first couple months are blurry…”
“And from what we know from Madeline is that they had to do a lot of maintenance… or at least that is what Paul told her he called it maintenance… it could be that Nikita was slipping out of the programming… or just Paul putting more past memories in there,” Adrian added and Mick nodded his head. He was wondering about the whole thing himself. “He would never tell us what he did.”
“He’d rather see us run around trying to figure it out,” Adrian bite out as Walter leaned his head down on the table. “I don’t know what to do.”
No one at the table did.
