“Madeline, I really think we should let Walter come in and interview this woman. She is new but shows the signs,” Davenport spoke even as he closed the door to the office on the first floor that they had established. Madeline, although back at Wolfe Institute, had not been able to go up to the fourth floor. It was space that needed to be used somehow, but Davenport didn’t push anything at this moment in time.
“Not everything is going to be brainwashing…” Madeline declared and Davenport moved towards the desk that Madeline was sitting behind. He leaned forward. “Madeline… can you look me in my eyes and tell me that you do not believe that it was brainwashing?”
Madeline twitched and Davenport leaned back away from the desk. Madeline turned her head and rubbed her neck. “Davenport… if it is, you know what that means…”
“That Paul is up to no good…” Davenport declared and Madeline stood up and started to pace about. She knew that Davenport was right and that she should allow Walter to come in and interview this woman. She wasn’t like Fusayo in that the memories of the nouns were gone. The woman had all of her education intact, but there simply wasn’t anything else that she had. But she was readily remembering details that were currently happened. What was even scarier was the fact that the new woman wasn’t a foreigner at all.
But if Paul was doing this, he had to have hooked up with someone. Madeline wanted to find out who it was. That person, the person who was using Paul’s abilities, could be much more dangerous than Paul. That was the bigger concern for Madeline. The world was filled with dangerous men and if Paul aligned himself with someone, this could get really bad, really quick.
“Someone has to step forward and stop that man,” Davenport issued and Madeline stopped and stared at Davenport. “And you think it should be me?”
“That’s one thought.”
“I haven’t been all the way deprogrammed. Karl would never go for it,” Madeline shook her head back and forth. Something told her to be scared of what Davenport was suggesting. If Paul had put fail safes in her in attempts to stop her from telling Nikita the truth and knowing all that was done to Nikita, he could have made it dangerous for Madeline to step forward. “And how do we prove that this is Paul?”
“If you and Nikita go forward… we have the records…”
“That would never stand up in court,” Madeline pointed out as she shook her head as she got cold. “And I would never want Nikita to do this.”
“Well maybe Nikita would want to do this!”
Madeline knew that Nikita would do this. It was something that Nikita was very good at, doing what was the best for others even if it wasn’t what the best was for Nikita. Madeline did not want this to become a situation where Nikita did this for someone else. If Nikita was going to come forward and reveal what had happened to her by the hands of Paul and herself, Madeline wanted it because Nikita needed to do it for herself. This could not be because someone else was in danger. “You can’t tell Nikita about this.”
Davenport walked to the wall and leaned back. “Others can be hurt like you…”
“And we’ll find a way to deal with this… but we have to find where Paul is now. He left town…” Madeline pointed out as she felt so tired too. She tried to turn her head to the side but it only gave her more pain. “You can have Walter talk to the woman.”
“If Walter finds out that it is Paul?”
“We may never be able to link it… she isn’t brainwashed like Nikita or myself… she isn’t even like Fusayo… how do we tie ourselves all together?” Madeline hissed as she rubbed her hand against her chest, almost finding it hard to breathe.
Davenport turned away and stared at the door. He at least had the permission from Madeline to bring in Walter, which he truly didn’t need to have. In fact, Walter was already on his way in. But Davenport didn’t need Madeline making it harder and he needed to see how Madeline was going to function when put on the spot and if she was truly ready for work again.
She was so good with some of the patients, especially the elderly patients. She was patient as several believed her to be their adult child. Madeline would hold their hands and smiled at them as they recalled events that had happened. Madeline would stop the staff from stepping in and allowed the patients to go on about what they wanted too. There was no reason to burst their bubble and a child would never just leave.
But Madeline used to be good at everyone and Davenport knew that there was no way that Wolfe Institute could stay at this level of patients without an influx of staff and quick. It was clear that Nikita was not going to be back. She was very skilled but easily had said that she would never come back here or back to being a therapist. Maybe she was using those skills with Michael, but she wasn’t going to go back to that career. It was probably the best decision because Nikita didn’t always seem to be the happiest while doing the job, although she would have claimed otherwise. To pull Madeline out, Davenport felt like he would just be washed away.
Madeline felt tears on her face. “I do want to stop him, Davenport…”
The tone of Madeline’s voice and not the words got Davenport’s attention. He turned to see Madeline clutching her chest with one hand and her head with the other. She had turned pale and was shivering with what appeared to be from being cold. “Madeline… are you ok?”
“He… he… he hurt a lot of us… he hurt Nikita… he made me hurt Nikita…” Madeline spoke as she didn’t answer Davenport’s question. Davenport placed his hand into his pocket and pulled out the cell phone. He glanced at it to press the quick dial to Karl and moved towards Madeline. “Maybe you should sit down, Madeline… you don’t look so good right now.”
Madeline stood there as she only saw the tears in her eyes. “I don’t have power over him… he can destroy me… and maybe he could destroy Nikita… he has all the cards… all the cards…”
“Madeline,” Davenport spoke as he knew that this wasn’t looking good at all. Before he could say another word and before he could even get her, Madeline collapsed. Davenport called out her name and reached her side while clutching the cell phone where Karl was shouting out, “I’m on my way… hang up and call 911!”
Davenport felt for a pulse and after feeling one, he pulled the phone up to call 911.
