There was a gentle knock at the door of the house and Walter jumped to his feet, knocking himself out of the light sleep that he had fallen into while sitting in the kitchen waiting for news. He had interviewed the woman at Wolfe Institute and immediately had Davenport transfer her out as it was clear that she had been brainwashed. But Walter was more concerned about Madeline and he hoped that whoever was at the door at this hour was here about Madeline.
Jurgen stood there and Walter motioned for him to come in. “You have news?”
Jurgen nodded his head up and down. “They are running all kinds of tests… but it appears to have been a panic attack and a shut down of multiple systems… she is resting now.”
“Paul’s doing?” Walter inquired and Jurgen shook his head back and forth. “I really think this was Madeline… she is really scared about what was done to her and I think just thinking that someone out there is doing this still… pushed her.”
“Is that what Karl and Adrian thinks?”
“Adrian isn’t researching this. She is with Madeline. Adrian is acting like a mother right now,” Jurgen explained as he rubbed his face. Walter moved to the pot of coffee and turned towards Jurgen. Jurgen shook his head back and forth and sat down at the counter.
“Any leads on where he is?”
Walter shook his head back and forth. “No leads… but I think I know who he is working with… thanks to Birkoff.”
“Birkoff?”
“He may be working on something for Michael, but the boy can multi-task like no one else,” Walter chuckled gently as he was relieved to hear that Madeline was doing well. The first concern had been a heart attack or a stroke. It sounded like the doctors had ruled all of those out.
“Alec Chandler,” Walter frowned as he said the name. “Paul had some conversations with him… and Alec is a bad man… trafficking of women… never been able to tag him hard for the crimes either…”
Jurgen felt as if the world had just changed. “You aren’t thinking that they are…”
“Talk about a highly priced product,” Walter nodded his head up and down. Ever since Walter got the name of Alec Chandler and Walter reviewed the man’s file, Walter had an idea of exactly what Paul and Alec were doing together. “Problem is, Alec left the country.”
“Shit,” Jurgen hissed and then stopped. “Did Paul?”
“He left his passport at Wolfe Institute… he could be traveling as someone else now. Alec has the means to make that happen,” Walter shook his head as he swallowed hard. “I can’t take the Police Chief this… this is all a crazy idea… and no one is ready to come out about this.”
“Adrian should,” Jurgen commented as he swallowed hard. He had a feeling that Adrian could have stopped a lot of things. She had been putting on an act while she was in Wolfe Institute, so how long had she been putting on an act. Was it recent? Or was it the entire time? “She is the one who started this.”
“She didn’t make him into a monster…”
“And Paul may telling everyone what he was trying to do to help Nikita… on the surface… it can be seen as Paul trying to do what was best for Nikita,” Jurgen declared as he shook his head. “This is a mess.”
“Legally, this isn’t going to go easily,” Walter admitted. “It may never be seen as a crime either… not what happened to Nikita and Madeline… and all of the evidence would be thrown out…”
“Madeline reacted like this because she heard about others… what is Nikita going to think about this?” Jurgen posed the question.
Silence filled the room as both men had a lot to think about. No one had told Nikita or Michael about Madeline being rushed to the hospital. The relationship between Nikita and Madeline was tentative at best. Nikita may not have the reaction that everyone fears right now, but why chance it. They had all seen what had happened on Thanksgiving.
“Madeline will tell us what to do,” Walter finally spoke as he rubbed his head and walked to the locked cabinet. “Whisky? Vodka?”
“Yeah,” Jurgen nodded his head as he couldn’t think of anything else to do right now.
