“This has to be one of the best Christmas gifts ever,” Walter raved as he shook his head in wonder walking around Kate’s physical therapy center. She hadn’t even come up with a name of it yet, and she had patients, not just Nikita, lined up to start there. Kate was going to be interviewing for staff between now, December 19th, and the New Year. Nikita was the only patient that was going to be using the space for now, which was good given that it was decorated for the holidays and now serving as the main area for the reception-slash-party, that was occurring.
“It isn’t a gift,” Kate reminded Walter as she shook her head. She had worked out terms with Michael that made her feel like she wasn’t taking too much from Michael’s generosity. She was grateful for what he was doing for her and she was never going to forget it.
“Darling, you will never really know, will you?” Walter lowered his eyes and looked at Kate. Kate nodded her head. She had to take Michael’s word on a lot of things like the value of the space. There was no doubt in her mind that Michael underestimated the values of the space, but she had to believe that Michael would never underestimate something that would cost him in the long run. This was a business deal and Kate held onto that belief.
“So, when do I get to try to wear heals?” Nikita inquired as she walked up to Kate, carefully, without a crutch. After Nikita’s set back, Kate had found Nikita’s knee taking a bit more time to get back to where it was. Maybe that was a good thing because Kate didn’t want Nikita pushing too hard too quickly. “You are lucky I accepted the no crutch for tonight. Tomorrow you are back on it.”
“Sure,” Nikita rolled her eyes as she carefully turned and hugged Walter as he slowly, but effortlessly. Kate felt like she was in a merry-go-round until Jurgen wrapped his arms around her. “Enjoying things.”
“There are so many people here,” Kate spoke as she wasn’t sure how Michael got all of these people here.
“Yeah, seems as if our business partner has plans that we didn’t know about,” Jurgen whispered and Kate narrowed her eyes. “What?”
“Well,” Jurgen drew out slowly as he looked at Kate. “Michael has some influence with MJS… and our names have magically appeared on suggestions of doctors and physical therapy locations… so has Mick’s name.”
Kate swung her head from side to side. “I don’t have a staff yet…”
“I have Gail,” Jurgen laughed as he knew that what Michael had done was set them up, big time. “Here I thought I was going to have some time to learn how to play golf or something.”
“You hate golf,” Kate deadpanned and Jurgen kissed her lips. “I know I do… but you get my point.”
“Michael trusts us,” Kate swung her head as she was so unsure why Michael was doing all of this.
Across the room Rene walked in and sighed heavily. Simone was by his side as he took in what Michael was involved with now. Simone smiled broadly. “This feels like Michael’s touch.”
“Why do it here and not at MJS?” Rene inquired and Simone looked at Rene. She had told her father that Michael would probably want to start something new and something that was his alone. To know that he was doing this to help friends out that had come to his aid when he needed it that was something that Simone knew that Michael would do.
Michael Samuelle may not remember everything – but he was definitely the same man he used to be.
“Ah, Nikita… It’s so good to see you,” Rene stopped Nikita and Walter on their way to the refreshments. Nikita took an extra second to balance herself and shake Rene’s hand. “Oh… have you met my daughter? Nikita Wirth, this is my daughter Simone Dian-Phelps.”
Nikita extended her hand and Simone shook it carefully. “I have heard so much about you.”
Nikita was taken back by that and she simply smiled. “It’s nice to meet you…”
“Kita!” Michael called out as he broke through the crowd and stopped by her side. Then he saw Rene and Simone there. He hadn’t exactly invited Simone and Michael shook Rene’s hand. “It’s nice that you were able to come.”
“I wanted to visit and see if there is anything that I can do to help you. I’m sure that marketing is one of your last thoughts right now,” Simone offered as she tossed her hair back. Michael shook his head as he was not sure where this offer was coming from. “I don’t know if marketing is really needed.”
“Oh, it is,” Simone declared as she touched Michael’s elbow. Nikita stared at the touch and swallowed hard. “I read the mission statement for this building and it is beautiful. I love anyplace that is about cooperation. I have some simple ideas that we can go over and it wouldn’t take a marketing budget.”
“That’s interesting,” Michael spoke as a businessman, truly wanting to know what Simone had in mind. He still had some space on the first floor that had to be filled up, not that it was going to hurt Michael not to have that space filled up.
“Emarketing and using social networks is the way to go to get fast results without spending a lot of money… if any money other than time,” Simone declared and Nikita pushed her hair back and swallowed. “Michael… I’m going to get something to drink. Would you like to come?”
“I’ll meet you over there,” Michael nodded as he pressed a kiss to Nikita’s cheek. Nikita was off-put by Michael’s reply and how he stayed with Simone as she walked away. Nikita took a bit of the punch and found a table to sit down at and take a heavy sigh. She looked across the room to see Michael still chatting with Simone.
“So tell me all about the animal shelter today,” Belinda sat down next to Nikita, unaware of Nikita’s questions that were going on inside of her head. Nikita blinked her eyes and looked at Belinda. “What?”
“You went to the animal shelter, right? You called me after the first time you volunteered… so tell me about this time,” Belinda directed Nikita. Nikita forced out a smile.
The first time at the animal shelter, it was great. Nikita got to bottle feed puppies. This time, Nikita got stuck stapling together applications. Nikita did it without hesitation as she was glad to be doing something, but she was not thrilled about this change. “The puppies were taken to a foster place… it wasn’t as fun, Belinda.”
“It’s not always going to be fun.”
“I’m not sure if it’s right for me. I’m not even sure if it’s something I want to do again,” Nikita declared with a shake of her head. Belinda frowned. She was almost sure that Nikita had fallen in love with the puppies that she was going to end up with one of them for Christmas. She wasn’t sure what was going on. “Maybe you need to give it another time.”
“Maybe I should just spend my time getting better… and maybe I should just be a therapist,” Nikita retorted firmly and Belinda was more than shocked. She didn’t expect this from Nikita and she didn’t know where it had come from.
“Hey, Kita…” Michael whispered as he bent down and tried to kiss Nikita’s cheek. She turned and twisted away from him, stopping him from touching her. Belinda looked at Michael and shrugged her shoulders. Something wasn’t right here and Belinda had not the foggiest what was going on. “I’m going to go over there and mingle with Mick… I think Kurt and Madeline got here.”
“Yes, they did just arrive,” Michael confirm as he was grateful that Belinda was leaving him alone with Nikita. He took Belinda’s seat and maneuvered himself so Nikita had to look at him. “Kita…”
Nikita just shook her head back and forth. Michael touched her cheek and felt her pull away. “What is it, Kita?”
“Stop calling me that,” Nikita snipped and Michael did not move away from her. “What did I do?”
“More like what did I make up in my head between us,” Nikita rasped as she shook her head back and forth. “I knew that you were too good of a man.”
“Too good of a man?”
“For me,” Nikita looked at Michael ad then back across the room to where the perfectly petite and perfectly healthy Simone Dian-Phelps was standing. “Do you remember her now? Do you want to be with her instead?”
Michael looked at Nikita’s eyes and then had to follow them to where Nikita was looking. He frowned. “With Simone? Kita… she is married… has a daughter.”
“And your heart,” Nikita sourly declared and Michael shifted and blocked Nikita’s view of Simone. “I was interested in what she had to say about marketing. I think it is something that I’m interested in… but that was all that there was between us.”
Nikita rubbed her head and shook her head. Michael kissed Nikita’s lips and looked at her. In ways, Michael loved that she was upset like this because he was talking to another woman. Nikita just didn’t understand how perfect that she was and that was one of the many things that made Michael’s love for Nikita grown even more. “Kita, you are the only woman I am ever going to love. Our souls have combined… and you are worried about us right now because you know how much you love me… and you have to know that I love you.”
Nikita’s eyes filled with tears and Michael pushed them away. He kissed his Nikita’s tears away and leaned back as he sat there.
Suddenly, everything was right and everything was showing Michael that it was the moment. Others would doubt that he could so easily know that Nikita was the one, but he did know. She was the one that he was meant to be with forever. There was nothing that would ever make him leave her side. Nikita was the woman for him and she was the only one who was ever going to complete him.
Michael pushed the chair away and eased himself down onto one knee, right in front of Nikita. She didn’t catch what he was doing as she was just living with the knowledge that Michael loved her this much that he was able to walk away from a perfect woman like Simone, one that could have his child.
Nothing around them mattered as Michael touched one hand to Nikita’s cheek and slipped his other hand into his suit. He did not know why he had gotten this ring last week and he didn’t know why he had placed it into his suit tonight, but it was just another sign that they were destined to be together forever. He looked into Nikita’s eyes and shifted so he brought the ring up for Nikita to see.
“Nikita Wirth… you mattered to me so much that I can’t stand you worrying about how much I love you… because there is nothing in the world that can ever compare to you… You gave me life back… you gave me, me back… and you are constantly making me a better man… I want to spend every last breathe of my life with you…. Please, please let’s do this right… and will you marry me?” Michael rasped as he held still in front of Nikita. He saw her tremble as he then eased the ring out of the box. He held it to her finger and waited.
Walter had noticed something was going on when Belinda had rushed away from Michael and Nikita. He had turned to watch the couple but had now turned Belinda way from her conversation with Madeline and Karl so she could see Michael get down on the traditional one knee. The holiday music continued to play, but the chattered ended as quickly the room all started to notice the magical thing happening between the couple in the back corner.
“Michael…” Nikita rasped as she looked at the ring. There were so many reasons for him not to marry her. “You can do… better…”
“You are the best,” Michael whispered and Nikita felt the ring slipping down onto her finger. Michael wanted Nikita to feel it. She needed to know that he was putting the ring onto her finger. He was indicating that she was the best for him.
Somewhere, Nikita’s head started to nod up and down. Then finally she faintly whispered, still unsure if it was the right thing for Michael, “Yes… I’ll marry you.”
