Nikita sat on the couch with some ice on her knee. She had overdone it and she was paying the price. However, Nikita would change a moment of what she had done tonight. Even as she held the ice on her knee, she could see the ring that Michael had placed on her finger and still felt like pinching herself. She had been engaged before, but it never felt so special. Davenport was a friend and this was nothing like that at all. Nikita had barely ever looked at that ring. This ring – the ring from Michael – Nikita couldn’t take her eyes off of.
Nikita had always shied away from being the center of attention, but not tonight. She stayed on her feet much longer than she should have as she mingled with Michael by herself to show everyone the ring. She got huge hugs from all of her friends and family and had adoring looks from women who wished that they could be in Nikita’s shoes. Even Simone seemed genuinely happy for the both of them.
“Kita?” Michael called out as he walked down the staircase and looked at Nikita. He felt a wave of guilt come across him as he saw the pack of ice on her knee. “Is it feeling better?”
“Nothing that some sleep won’t help… but I guess we should be… careful tonight,” Nikita spoke and Michael sat down next to Nikita. He looked at her knee and swallowed. “Kita… I’m so sorry…”
Nikita tilted her head to the side. “Sorry?”
“I mean… there are things that I need to tell you…” Michael stated and Nikita jerked away from him. She looked at the ring and swallowed. “You don’t want to marry me…”
“Kita! I do want to marry you!” Michael exclaimed as he was feeling guilty about things but knew that he wanted to marry Nikita. That would never change. He needed to marry Nikita. “Why would you think that?”
“It seemed… out of the blue…” Nikita admitted as Michael took her hand and touched the ring gently. He kissed her cheek. “Because I’m going to marry you… I know that I have to tell you things that I’m used to dealing with on my own… that’s what I have to tell you.”
“Is there another building that I need to know about?” Nikita quipped and Michael shook his head. He wished that there was another building to tell Nikita about and he worried about the news that he had to share. “I learned from that mistake, Kita.”
“Are you remembering something?” Nikita inquired and Michael closed his eyes. That was another thing he wished that he could tell Nikita. “Kita, it’s something that I found out.”
“I know that you are going to find things out about your life, Michael. Now that you are out with your friends and people who have known you for most of your life, you are going to find things out. It would be impossible for that to not happen. You would have had to stay in Wolfe Institute,” Nikita tried to ease Michael’s worries. She had wondered if something was on Michael’s mind as they had drove home, but she didn’t want Michael to worry about this. It was probably better that some of this was happening because maybe it would help trigger more in Michael’s memory.
Michael wished that it was something that he could just tell Nikita. If it was just a memory or something that he found out, that would be something so much simpler to explain. He wasn’t sure what Birkoff had found out, but it was something that Nikita needed to know about. She deserved to know what he was finding out about his parents, or not finding out about his parents. Nikita needed to hear these things from him.
“Nikita, it isn’t about that either,” Michael admitted as he paused and swallowed hard. He had tried hard not to think about what he knew right now – or more importantly what he didn’t know – but it was on his mind more often than he wanted it to be. Michael saw Nikita looking at him and he knew to hesitate it would just make it harder. “Birkoff is working for me… looking into my parent’s death.”
Nikita didn’t know that Michael had any questions about this and she was unable to respond. She reached out for Michael’s hands and he squeezed them as he was grateful for the touch. “Something doesn’t feel right about the situation… the way that Rene does things… it doesn’t sit right for me… and I may have a reason to be concerned.”
“A reason?” Nikita finally was able to question, unsure what Michael was saying and what it all truly meant.
“There are problems… I guess the DNA didn’t match up… and it looked like I was adopted… but Birkoff found some samples that showed that the autopsy samples weren’t from my parents…” Michael clutched Nikita’s hands, not wanting to let go of them. He knew that she would be there for him no matter what he found out about his parents. It was reassuring because since the first time that Michael had found this out, Michael felt like there was hope. He knew that Nikita would be there for him.
Nikita leaned in closer to Michael and he took a deep breathe. Her strength was flowing from her being to him. “When Birkoff had them do some tests to check the graves… it appears as if the graves are empty.”
“What?” Nikita exclaimed as she couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“I never saw them, Kita…” Michael whispered as he looked at Nikita. “They caskets were closed… but they may have never been in there to start with.”
Nikita shivered and Michael looked straight into her blue eyes, knowing that the truth would come out. “They are going to exhume the caskets… it’s possible that the tests weren’t right.”
“And if they are?” Nikita inquired and Michael exhaled slowly. “I’m not going to become obsessed about this, Nikita. I’m not going to run to France and start this frantic search… but I will have others investigate.”
“Whatever you need to do, Michael,” Nikita whispered as she pressed her cheek against Michael’s. “Just let me know what is going on… you aren’t alone in this.”
“I’m getting used to that fact, Kita… I really am,” Michael took his hands and wrapped them around Nikita, finding freedom in holding Nikita, knowing that she knew what he had not dare speak about.
This was what sharing your heart with someone meant and it only served to prove to Michael how badly he needed to make this woman his wife.
Hopefully soon.
