Nikita looked at the box and opened it slowly. Her heart raced as she looked at the gift that she had to have Belinda pick up. She had managed to find it and have it customized all via email, but Nikita just did not want to risk going into the crazy mall with her knee just getting better.

“It’s a beautiful item,” Belinda stated as she stood there as Nikita inspected the pendant. She had known that she wanted to get Michael a pendant of St. Michael because he was the patron saint of law enforcement. Michael might not be a police officer any longer, but he was the law enforcement that had saved her life and for that, Nikita would always be grateful.

Nikita didn’t want just a silver pendant because it seemed too simple. She had to search for a place that carried it in platinum. But then the first place would only sell it with a chain that just did not feel like Michael. She needed it to be placed on a cord or something along those lines. The first place refused to do that so Nikita had to find a second jeweler, who accepted the change to a leather cord. They also added the customization that Nikita now looked at the back of the pendant and was relieved to see it right.

“Thank you for getting this,” Nikita looked at Belinda with a bright smile. Belinda nodded her head as she handed the bag over to Nikita. “I thought you would want to wrap it yourself… I put some tape and paper in the bag.”

“Thanks,” Nikita nodded her head as she pulled the paper out and clapped her hands together. She was happy that she had gotten the perfect gift for Michael. She never really had to shop for someone for Christmas and this was a great accomplishment. When she had been with Davenport she would get him tickets to whatever sports team he wanted to see and she would get a new sweater and nice earrings. Nikita was nervous, but was sure that Michael was going to love this gift.

Belinda held a smile for as long as she could as she had left Michael’s and Nikita’s. It was as she entered her house and smelt the cookies that Aggie had started to back early on this day before the night before Christmas that stopped Belinda. She knew that Nikita was so happy about what she had gotten Michael, but Belinda had big worries about it. She snagged a broken cookie that Aggie had left out and popped it into her mouth and wandered into the living room where Walter was sitting.

He had heard Belinda come into the house and he had flipped off “It’s a Wonderful Life” because Belinda hated when Walter would watch that over and over again. He was surprised that she was being so quiet and he started to worry when Belinda walked into the living room. “What’s wrong, Honey-Bee?”

Belinda half smiled at her nickname and settled into Walter’s big bear hug. She blinked back tears and swallowed. “I know that Nikita’s gift is wonderful for Michael.”

“And that’s a problem?”

“It is when I know how much he got her,” Belinda shook her head slightly from side to side. “Nikita is so happy with what she got him… and I just fear that when she sees what he has gotten for her… that it’s going to make her feel like she didn’t do enough.”

“I tried to warn Michael,” Walter whispered as he rubbed at Belinda’s shoulders. “But this is also something that they are going to have to work out and live through. We can’t always insulate them from what they can do to each other… but I think you are worrying too much about this.”

Belinda frowned. “I just don’t want Christmas not to be happy for her… I worry about Christmas and Nikita.”

Walter swallowed hard and knew exactly what Belinda was talking about. Mick had tried to get Nikita to talk about Christmas in her past, but she had never spoken about it. Walter had asked Nikita, but she had said that she was just looking forward to this Christmas. “Michael will handle it Belinda.”

“She is going to think she did something wrong,” Belinda shook her head as she exhaled slowly. “I remember the first Christmas we were together… and I knew that I got you good things… but when I saw you come in with all the things for Aggie and Gus… I suddenly felt like I was a schmuck for not doing more for you.”

Walter laughed as he kissed her cheek. “I remember that Christmas and I was sure that you were going to punch me when I arrived with all of those things.”

“You over did it.”

“So that’s what Michael did too. You survived that Christmas.”

“But what if I was Nikita?” Belinda inquired as she pulled her legs up onto the couch and leaned into Walter.

“Michael can have anything that he wants in the world… you told me what Nikita got Michael and that is going to matter more than ten or twenty or a hundred gifts that Nikita could buy him,” Walter explained as he pulled Belinda into his hug and kissed her neck. “It’s going to work out.”

“Maybe we bought her too much?” Belinda suggested and Walter pulled away. “I’m not taking a blessed thing back because you are worried. By the time Michael spoils her… she should be prepared for this place. Plus, Aggie and Gus helped us. They didn’t want to help with anyone else!”

Closing her eyes, Belinda swallowed and nodded her head. “I know that you are right… I just worry.”

“Madeline must have given her Christmas herself,” Walter declared as he couldn’t imagine Madeline not having Christmas. Belinda turned slightly. “Did anyone think to ask Madeline?”

“She hasn’t really been much help of late… it’s like something blocks what she remembers about Nikita…” Walter winced and Belinda groaned. Walter started to rock from side to side. “It’s going to be fine, Belinda.”

“Sure…”

“Believe me,” Walter stayed soft and light. “Michael sprung an engagement on Nikita in a public place… I think they can survive Christmas.”

“I hope so,” Belinda fretted as she wasn’t sure. She closed her eyes and mentally shook herself out of the thoughts. She couldn’t think about Michael and Nikita until Christmas. “Now, turn back on your movie… please tell me that it’s almost over.”

Walter roared with laughter and picked up the remote. “About three-fourths of the way…”
