It was Christmas Eve and Nikita was just getting home after having a long session of physical therapy. Kate was taking most of the time between Christmas and New Year’s off, so Nikita wanted to make sure that she did as much as she could in therapy before the break. But the best news was given to Nikita, for now, she, as long as she didn’t overdo it, could put the single crutch away as she wasn’t limping while walking. Nikita still had a long way to go with strength and getting back to the ability to job, but this was a huge first sign of better things to happen.
Nikita rolled her head to the side as she walked into the condo, Kate having offered to drop her off on this day. Nikita took a deep breath and smelled something very good cooking and headed right to the kitchen. Michael was there behind the stove with a black apron on. Nikita was impressed with Michael’s skills in the kitchen and never made a comment about it because she loved that he cooked for her. “I’m back… What’s for dinner?”
“Cauliflower Provencal, oysters with a champagne sabayon, Supreme de Pintadeau au Miel et Pain d’Epices, and La Bûche de Noël,” Michael rattled off and Nikita blinked her eyes, trying to figure out what Michael was saying to her. It all smelled good, but she wasn’t quite sure what it was.
“Some of the traditional French foods I remember from Christmas… we had elaborate dinners and meals… and it went on for weeks… so I took the things that I knew how to make and the best… for this meal… and I didn’t use Guinea Hens for the meat in the Supreme de Pintadeau au Miel et Pain d’Epices… I used turkey breasts,” Michael explained as he walked over to Nikita and kissed her cheek.
Nikita felt a blush creep up her face as she hated that Michael knew that she was lost. “I’m sorry…”
“I think it’s cute… and I knew that you wouldn’t know what I said,” Michael admitted and Nikita smirked. She loved being near Michael. She felt perfect. “But oysters?”
“It’s slightly naughty,” Michael grinned with a shrug of his shoulders. Nikita stepped back and looked at Michael. “I’m going to hop in the shower and get into something more comfortable.”
Michael stared at her and Nikita stopped herself from walking away. “Is something wrong with my plans? Do I have to dress up for our dinner here?”
Michael pulled off the apron and Nikita was surprised with how dressed up Michael was at the moment. “I was going to take us to a midnight mass… well, not exactly midnight… but it’s a midnight mass.”
“I didn’t know that you were religious,” Nikita dully spoke as she was stunned with what Michael just said. How could she not know this about Michael?
“I’m really not,” Michael admitted as he folded his hands in front of him, now nervous of how Nikita was going to take his plans. Until he heard her dull voice, he thought that Nikita would have no problems with what he wanted to do. “But I remember lots of Christmas masses… the beauty of it… the majestic… the feeling of… peace and happiness… the music… the candlelight… it’s that memory of how it just engulfs you in this feeling of well being…”
“And your parents?” Nikita’s voice cracked as she asked and Michael nodded his head. “I remember them so clearly at Christmas mass… how they would sit side by side, holding hands and being happy… being a family with them at Christmas mass… I remember all of those things… the bright poinsettias, the gold bows… the smell of pine…”
Nikita stood there as she shifted her weight from side to side, processing what Michael was saying. She was happy that he had retrieved these happy moments of Christmas, but she wasn’t sure how to process it with her memories of Christmas, which were definitely not matching Michael’s memories of Christmas. She remembered a lot of them not mattering. One was spent in a shelter and a couple of them with stuffy dinners with Madeline and Paul. Even when she went to Christmas at Davenport’s, it was this emotional response that Michael was having right now. Plus Nikita had never gone to church.
“I found a church here… non-denominational… that is small but I have heard that its Christmas mass is amazing… and I wanted to go with you.. It’s a candlelight mass at ten… and I just thought you’d go…” Michael rasped as he could see the uneasiness in Nikita’s eyes. “We don’t have to go, Kita.”
“No,” Nikita replied instantly. She wanted to know about Michael’s memories and clearly the holiday had allowed Michael to remember a lot of good things. It was a great sign and she stepped back to touch Michael’s cheek. “I just wish I would have known before now…”
Michael could see that it was not truly the truth, but he took Nikita’s hand. “Are you sure? We can stay here… cuddle on the couch… I can prepare more oysters up… I only did two for us with dinner… but I have more…”
Nikita shook her head from side to side. “No… I want to go to this church… we can create a new memory together… so next Christmas I will know how special Christmas can feel.”
“I keep forgetting, Kita,” Michael reached out and brushed his hand against her cheek.
“Forget what?”
“That you didn’t have anything like this in your life… and it hurts to think that someone took these types of experiences… normal childhood… away from you,” Michael’s voice cracked and he sighed heavily. “It’s not going to make you nervous? You won’t be scared going, will you?”
“I won’t be nervous,” Nikita lied as she took Michael’s hand and kissed it. “I just wished I would have known because I would have bought something appropriate to wear.”
Michael chuckled as he pulled his hand away and mentally pushed away the thought that Nikita wasn’t being truthful with him right now. “Funny you should mention that…”
Nikita narrowed her eyes and Michael shrugged his shoulders. “I got you something to wear…”
“Michael…”
“You’ll love it,” Michael declared before Nikita could say another word. He turned his head and checked on the stove and pushed Nikita towards the stairs and the bedroom. He had a few moments that he could go away from the kitchen.
Nikita walked into the bedroom and saw the garment bag hanging there. Nikita looked at Michael and swung her head from side to side. “Michael…”
“You would have picked pants… but I saw this and knew that I wanted to see you in this,” Michael stepped forward to unzip the bag. Inside was a Phoebe Couture ruffled v-neck dress. On the bodice, it was an elaborate pattern that had a hint of a burgundy in the color. Then there was a ruched iridescent taffeta waist in a muted gold tone and printed jacquard sheath skirt. It didn’t scream out Christmas but it was what made Michael know that it was for Nikita. It was going to highlight her features and curves that she had. He couldn’t wait to see Nikita in the dress.
Nikita did not want to touch the dress as she was just back from physical therapy, but she knew that her mouth had dropped open. “Michael…”
“And… one more thing…” Michael spoke as he zipped the bag up. He turned and returned with a shoebox. “I made a promise to Kate that you wouldn’t wear these until we were on our way out and if there was any hint of snow or ice… I would carry you.”
Nikita pushed the paper away and gasped. “These are Stuart Weitzman shoes?”
“Open the box,” Michael grinned as he knew that Nikita was not expecting this.
Inside was Stuart Weitzman heels that Michael was told was known as the Festivity style. They were a muted gold color with Chain t-strap with a stone ornamentation encrusted with Swarovski crystals. Although they normally featured a 3 ½ inch heel, Michael had them customize them and bring the heel down to two inches for Nikita. Nikita stared at the shoes and then looked back at the bag. There was no way that Michael bought her almost five hundred dollar shoes to go with a dress that wasn’t worth about the same. “This is too much.”
“You don’t want to wear the heels?”
“No!” Nikita declared as she looked at Michael. “This is too much.”
Michael didn’t think about the coat that he had for her downstairs as it was to get cold tonight and he knew that he might have to carry Nikita to follow Kate’s rules for the shoes as snow flurries were forecasted for around midnight. “Go take a shower, Kita… pamper yourself for a while… and get in your robe to eat dinner… and then we’ll dress you up…”
“If you help me, we may never make it to the church…” Nikita rasped as she walked over to Michael and gave him a huge kiss before heading towards the bathroom. She stopped and looked at Michael. “Unless you want to join me now.”
Michael swallowed hard and reminded himself that food would burn if he did what Nikita suggested. “That’s for have church, Kita…”
“As long as that’s a promise!”
