Merry Christmas, Kita, Michael pressed a kiss as he leaned over the bed to touch Nikitas cheek with his lips. She was almost awake and Michael was glad. He had been up for hours and he was filled with excitement, waiting for Nikita to wake up. Leaning back, he watched Nikita stretch her arms over her head and she slowly smiled at Michael. Morning
Come downstairs, Kita you have some gifts Michael pressed another kiss to her lips and eased out of the room. She was naked underneath the sheets and Michael was afraid if he lingered, he would return to bed. Last night had been sweet and tender between them and they had both fallen asleep underneath the heavy blankets naked against each other. If it wasnt for the lure of Christmas early this morning, Michael would have roused Nikita for another round of lovemaking.
Nikita pulled the blanket up with her and reached out of the bed and found Michaels shirt and a pair of his pajama bottoms waiting for her to use. Nikita pulled the shirt over her head before stepping out of the bed and walking to the bathroom to finish pulling herself together. She inhaled deeply and knew that she smelled strong coffee brewing.
She was stiff as she walked down the stairs and Nikita made herself take her time. Her leg was a bit sore and that could have been the heels from the previous night or from the lack of true sleep last night. Nikita had plans to wear the shoes again tonight when they went over to Walters for the big Christmas dinner so she was going to be sure to take it easy.
But as Nikita turned and looked into the living room where the quaint tree that she had decorated with Michael the previous weekend, Nikita found herself unable to move. She clutched the bag that had her box for Michael and couldnt comprehend what she was seeing.
The tree was surrounded by gifts of all shapes and sizes, and Nikita knew that they had to be for her. She had one gift for Michael and that was it. Her body was shaking but Nikita didnt know it. She just saw box after box that was wrapped in various shiny papers. Some even had bows on them. Her mind knew that it was too much for her. There was no reason for Michael to get her all of these things.
Do you want some coffee? Michael asked as he stepped into the living room. He looked at Nikita as she stared at the tree. He didnt realize that he had gotten this much and that it almost overwhelmed the tree, but he didnt regret it at all. Michael wanted to give Nikita everything and he was going to continue to do whatever it took to give her whatever she wanted in her life.
Excuse me Nikita rasped as she couldnt stand, holding the one gift that she had for Michael. She had worked so hard for that gift and it was a struggle. But it clearly wasnt enough. Michael had lots of gifts for her and she couldnt give Michael lots of gifts. She turned and went to the bathroom that was by the kitchen, closing the door. She sat down on the closed toilet and placed her bag in front of her feet.
There werent tears coming out of her eyes, but her face was burning hot in embarrassment. She should have known to get Michael more. She had shopped with Michael for gifts for their friends and he wouldnt hold back if Nikita couldnt make up her mind and got two things for their friends. She should have known that one tiny box wasnt going to be enough.
Christmas was never a holiday that Nikita wanted to think about. They werent happy and even when she was living with Madeline, they werent this elaborate production. In fact, this was the first time that Nikita had a tree where she was living to wake up too. Madeline didnt believe in the commercialized holiday and they would do their gift exchange well after dinner with Paul, which was anything but fun. It was always one gift and that was what Nikita assumed that this Christmas would be like. It had always been like that for her, if she got any gift at all.
Kita. Im sorry Michael spoke from the other side of the door. He knew as Nikita walked away, that he had overdone it. He felt bad that Nikita felt bad about it. Kita please
Christmas isnt about gifts, Michael I think it should be about memories Nikita declared from behind the closed door, trying to compose herself to pick up that one bag and face Michael. Maybe he was just too different from her to be the right now. She looked at the ring and knew that wasnt the case. Just thinking that thought almost brought a pain into her stomach that Nikita never wanted to feel.
Please, come out, Kita Michael spoke with a metered voice on the other side of the door. He was worried about her and Nikita shook her head in pain. She didnt want Michael to worry about her either. He deserved to have a good Christmas. He had them in the past and Nikita wanted to be sure that he had them again in the future. To ruin this one because of what she saw as excess was not fair to Michael.
You got me too much Nikita warned as she held onto the bag.
I have you thats all I really need Michael declared as his voice was deeper and it was clear that he was getting very worried about her. And if you can come out and Ill explain why this happened
Nikita hooked her fingers around the bag and stood up. She felt her face cooling off as she didnt want this to cloud all of the holiday. She wanted to be happy and she wanted to fight through her own desire to hide away from the joyous holiday. Nikita looked at the mirror and found that no tears had fallen, but she was still so very white. Nikita pushed her free hand against her face, not wanting to look bad at all as it would only upset Michael more.
Michael heard Nikita walking towards the door and he stepped back. As Nikita opened the door, he stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her. He could feel her still shaking and he regretted that he had just gone with what he wanted to do for Nikita. Showering gifts upon her felt like the right thing to do. She never had anyone to spoil her and Michael wanted to do that for her. He wanted to provide Nikita with the joy of having gifts after gifts to open. But as he shopped, he was almost given a gift that he hadnt anticipated. Somehow he had to explain that to Nikita.
Pulling Nikita back into the living room, Michael helped her down onto the couch. Nikita held the bag and looked at Michael. This is all that I got you.
But you gave me a better gift, Kita
No, Nikita swung her head as she looked at the tree and now felt tears growing. You gave me a dress and shoes and a coat and a ring Nikita gazed at the ring and then back at Michael. And I could only get you this and it felt right and now I have nothing else but this
Will you open a gift so I can explain the gift that you gave me? Michael wiped his thumbs across Nikitas face where the tears were spotting her face. She was shaking so badly and Michael mentally whipped himself for being so stupid for this decision.
Nikita gasped and Michael took the bag that she was clinging to, that held his gift, and placed it to the side. He knew that she was a different circumstance and he hated that Nikita worried about how she was going to pay for things. Michael could take care of everything. Michael didnt want her to feel like she had to figure out what she wanted to do and that she really didnt have to get a job. But Nikita did worry about those things so he should have known that this was going to happen. Michael turned and pulled up a gift from the front of the tree and placed it on Nikitas lap. Open this.
Michael I just need you Nikita looked at the box and then back up at Michael.
And you are going to see the gift you gave me Michael nudged the box. Nikita knew that she wasnt going to get anything more out of Michael right now. He was determined to make her open up this gift. Nikita started with the corners and Michael chuckled. Rip into it
Nikita never just opened up gifts like that. Nikita continued to go slowly and Michael shook his head. We arent going to reuse this paper, Kita just tear it off please so I can get to explain
Nikita pushed at the paper more like Michael insisted that she try. Michael was smiling and Nikita flipped the box over and then stopped as she saw the plain box. Michael
Just open it.
Nikita found the lid and pulled it off, knowing that whatever was inside was heavy. Nikita saw the cherry wood and was confused, she pulled at it and then a beautiful jewelry box appeared in her hands. It was cherry wood, but it was elaborately carved, no doubt carved by hand, and it had lots of drawers. Nikita had never had such a beautiful piece.
When I was shopping for this I turned the corner and saw this store where they made these by hand and I saw this and I could remember a jewelry box just like this that my mother had, Michael looked at Nikita as he lifted the lid and the velvet lined containers were seen. There was a mirror inside and Michael looked at Nikitas face. She would keep her precious things in the jewelry box and there were pieces from my father that were in there but more importantly the one year in school they had a Santa shop we could shop in it was for small things and I bought my mother this awful mood ring it was so cheap and it was made out of plastic but I remember her showing me that she put it in this special jewelry box where she put her most precious things and it was always there that ring never left that box
Nikita looked at Michael and he smiled. He turned and pulled out another box. He took the jewelry box and placed it over the side and put this one on her lap. Try this one open this one
Nikita pushed her fingers into the paper and quickly unwrapped a box, relieved that she didnt have to open the box to see what was there. This time it was a pair of slippers.
I got these because I remember shopping with my father one Christmas I think I was about nine and my mom wouldnt tell me what she wanted for Christmas and I didnt know what to get her My father went with me to store after store a whole day I looked at things and suddenly, after looking at clothes and things for the bedroom and looking at jewelry and games I turned the corner and there were these pair of slippers not like these ones but they were these big ugly monster feet with each toenail a different color they were huge and when they were stepped in, they roared and my father didnt hesitate when I said that was my gift for my mother He told me that it was a great decision and helped me get them wrapped Michael eased closer to Nikita.
Michael
You didnt need to get me any gift, Kita because shopping for you was my gift Michael explained as he shook his head from side to side. Every time I had a memory of my parents you gave me my parents back I got to remember them and I didnt want to stop shopping because every single thing that was perfect for you gave me more of my parents to hold onto, Michael explained as his voice got thick.
Nikita leaned back on the couch and touched Michaels cheek. She loved to hear these memories that Michael had. That was the most important thing and she needed to let Michael know that. I just want to hear what you remember all of it thats more important that these boxes
I was selfish Michael shook his head. I didnt want to stop shopping for you knowing that I would uncover more of my parents and I kept shopping but every single thing behind me under that tree, beside the tree and elsewhere I have a new memory that I have found again and Im going to tell you every single one of them.
Nikita felt her heart expand for what was going on. She was going to happily open all of these gifts. She would open anything for days if that got Michael closer to his parents and remembering everything. Did your mom have a fur coat?
Michael nodded his head up and down. He caught Nikitas hand. The only thing that I went to get you and I didnt recall my parents for was this ring I didnt buy that because I had a memory, Kita
Nikita leaned into Michael and kissed him tenderly. It was a beautiful gift that she got.
And it definitely wasnt underneath the tree.
