“I’m surprised with Michael’s actions,” Adrian spoke as she waited to get off of the plane as she stood next to Dr. Marlow Carle. Some would think that Adrian would despise having to take commercial flights, but she found it exhilarating to be freed in this manner. Most of that was credited to Dr. Carle.

“He didn’t threaten me?” Marlow rolled her eyes and Adrian patted the woman’s hand. “I meant waiting this long to bring Walter in. I thought by the time he was calling for you for a second opinion, he would be calling Walter too.”

From what Marlow had learned about Michael, he was a smart man. Probably if he would have reached out to Walter that soon, he would have thought that Section was truly still alive and that it had been all a plot. Walter needed that time away and he probably gave him the strength to handle what was going on. From all the stories that Adrian had told Marlow, Walter sounded much like a father to Nikita, even the short period of time that they spent together. Walter had been crushed when she was cancelled and it had to be a shock to learn these things.

“I think it was the right time. If Nikita hadn’t started to recover…”

Adrian started to move down the aisle as she glanced back at her friend. “You do realize that Michael is not going to accept anything less than a full recovery.”

Marlow realized that and that worried her. She had predicted that Nikita would have been getting better before this point. It had taken well too long to get to this point. It hinted that there would be more to recover. But there was limited language going on, which was a good indicate that it was not as bad as it could be. But to hear that one of the first things Nikita communicated was pain, countered any feelings of good that Marlow had about this.

“I hope that Walter will help with setting expectations with Michael,” Marlow sighed as she couldn’t believe how long it was taking to get off of the plane. She wanted to meet this Walter that she had a mental image of. “Of course, I might need him with regards to Nikita.”

“Why?”

“I have met her before,” Marlow reminded her friend again as she shook her head. “She may be less likely to accept anything less than perfect.”

Adrian rolled her shoulders back. “It was maddening that Madeline couldn’t see all the potential in Nikita… but I’m grateful, but also sadden by the risks that she had to take… especially since I had to bring you in that one… time.”

“Nurses don’t make good patients,” Marlow sighed as she thought easily back to when she first met Nikita. It absolutely wasn’t a time that Nikita was at her best.

Adrian opened up the door to the dilapidated apartment building and wiped her hands as she started up the stairs. “I have offered to provide other boarding for the girl. She is still afraid.”

“She is close to the hospital that she works at…. But why didn’t she go there?”

“There are some things that she wouldn’t be able to explain,” Adrian as she started up the stairs. “I told you about Chernov.”

“Sick.”

“Nikita didn’t trust the operative that was working with Michael’s team to take care of the job,” Adrian sternly spoke as she kept it to herself that she didn’t trust the operative either. She soon was at the door, telling Nikita that she was coming in. Adrian looked at Marlow. “She may still have a gun pulled on us.”

But as the door opened, there was no one standing there. Adrian stepped to the side and motioned to the couch. “Darling, couldn’t you have found another way.”

Nikita lifted her head and Marlow could tell that she had a fever. “You have an infection.”

“And I’ve taken an antibiotic.”

“You are a nurse, but not a doctor,” Marlow reprimanded as she walked to the couch and squatted down. “Adrian told me about this Chernov…”

“I got all of my eggs back,” Nikita growled as she shifted onto her back and rolled her head back. “I’m supposed to start at a nursing home tomorrow.”

“Not like this,” Marlow swung her head from side to side.

“That wasn’t a question,” Nikita declared as her blue eyes focused on the doctor and swatted at the hand that was trying to exam her. “The procedure room was rather clean for the situation. He was into cloning so he didn’t let things get dirty.”

“Still doesn’t mean that it was done right,” Marlow shook her head from side to side. She looked over her shoulder at Adrian as Nikita tried to curl up again, a sign of cramps. “I should examine her, Adrian. We could use some privacy.”

Slightly miffed, Adrian stepped out of the apartment while pulling her phone out. Nikita groaned. “She is trying to contact Michael.”

“Would he have stopped this?”

“He never had a chance to,” Nikita rasped as she looked at the doctor. “He did the extraction without any hormone treatment… I haven’t seen much written about that.”

Marlow exhaled as she placed a hand against Nikita’s forehead.”You must love that Michael to do this to yourself.”

“Not only for him,” Nikita shook her head slightly. “Cloning… the experiments that Chernov was doing… had to stop. For the good of the world.”

“And there was a mission. Adrian told me that it was active,” Marlow pointed out and Nikita stared at the doctor for a while until a wave of a cramp forced her to wince. “The girl… operative… I think her name was Helena… he made her for an operative.”

“I want to make sure that he didn’t nick your bladder…” Marlow explained as she made sure that Adrian hadn’t slipped back into the room.

“He didn’t,” Nikita shook her head. “I’ve just didn’t answer the phone quickly enough for Adrian…. She wants me to do what she wants me to do… but I don’t have to live like that.”

“Humor me,” Marlow directed the young woman. “You may be a great nurse. But I am the doctor in the room.”

They were off the plane and had been quickly whisked with the group of other flyers out of the airside terminal to the landside. Marlow had been lost in her brief, but very clear memories of Nikita Wirth when Adrian dashed away. “Walter… you have cleaned up!”

Marlow glanced up to see the gentleman who was pushed Adrian’s hugging arms away. She had anticipated a leather coat and a long ponytail, but he was wearing a dark blue polo shirt and jeans and the hair was neatly trimmed, nothing like the biker that Adrian had made him sound like. Walter had toned down his strong image once Section One was closed on the off chance that he was known too well as the biker. It had been an easy decision to ditch the leather coat while dealing with Nikita’s health crisis was not very difficult that he rarely wore it any longer.

“It is easier for the hospital staff to accept me,” Walter spoke as he took another step away from Adrian, taken back by her desire to touch him. He knew of the woman and had spoken with her a few times while she was in Section, but not to the level of considering her a friend.

“I’m Dr. Marlow Carle,” Marlow spoke as she stepped forward with her hand. Walter didn’t shake it. He nodded his head up and down. “Michael was right… if you weren’t with Adrian, you wouldn’t have been who I picked up as the doctor.”

“I’ve done research for many years,” Marlow folded her hands in front of her.

“Too young to be doing research,” Walter winked as he laughed slightly and glanced at the phone. He shook his head.

“An update from the hospital?” Marlow guessed and Walter shuttered his eyes for a moment. “Michael calls them nightmares.”

“It is probably the best guess at what is going on,” Marlow shrugged her shoulders. “It means that she is getting better.”

Walter shoved the phone back into his pocket. “I hope so.”

“I’ve been working with the hospital administrator for weeks to get privileges… even with Michael’s financial support of the wing… they weren’t so open to allowing me to be a doctor in their hospital,” Marlow rubbed at her knuckles as she knew that this was another reason why she didn’t come sooner. “That got resolved about three days ago.”

Walter looked at Adrian and shook his head. “That wasn’t nice of you, Adrian. You could have pulled strings.”

“I told her not too,” Marlow declared as she knew how often Adrian begged her to allow for the interference to make this easier. “Things might not be best to be in the light… but I have to do this part in the best way I know… and if for some reason I need other specialists… I need it to be right.”

Walter looked at the baggage claim and sighed. “How many bags?”

“That has been arranged,” Adrian announced as she looked at Walter. “We both want to see Nikita.”

“Well, that’s Michael’s decision,” Walter reminded Adrian who ultimately had the final decision, but relieved that he didn’t have to wait for the bags.
