Michael turned his head in the office and saw Madeline ease into the office as if she hadn’t been gone for four days. “I haven’t seen you since Sunday, sis…”
Madeline nodded her head as if there was nothing with what he had just said. Michael jerked up and dropped his pen from the bills that he was paying. “Gail and Jasmine were to have meetings with you the past two days about the camp schedule of special events.”
“Other things came up,” Madeline retorted as she turned and slipped into the chair in front of Michael. “I’ve had the best time, Michael…”
“Paul tends to do that to you. I usually don’t lose you for four days. You do know that it is Thursday, right?” Michael inquired and Madeline was just smiling at him as she nodded her head up and down. “Are you on some sort of drugs, Madeline?”
“Diamonds,” Madeline replied and Michael shook his head. “What?”
“Diamonds!” Madeline exclaimed as she shoved her hand forward and the large engagement ring sat on her finger. Michael was taken back. He knew that Madeline and Paul were serious about each other, but he never thought that either would marry. They seemed to be content with the life that they had were they could be separate when they weren’t together. Neither had seemed to be even hinting at marriage and this surprised Michael. “Madeline!”
Michael stood up to hug his sister. Madeline happily hugged him back. She then went right back to sitting in the chair, now looking at her ring. “I was stunned when he asked… and I can’t tell you how he asked because it would be so… let’s just say that he almost makes Nikita’s Stormy Heights… simple…”
Michael shook his head back and forth. “Way too much information!”
“All I have to say… it was the best moment in my life…” Madeline gushed and then she sighed. “And yes… the days did kind of slip away from me.”
“I didn’t worry. I had a feeling you were with Paul. You never really take time away so I’m not complaining,” Michael shrugged as he couldn’t stop smile. He was really happy for his sister. She had passed up some good men in the past because of him. He never asked her to do that, but Madeline had. Paul was a good match for her.
Madeline pulled her hand back to her lap and leaned into Michael’s desk. “Did I leave you in a lurch?”
“It’s been a trying couple days,” Michael tried to be diplomatic about explaining what was going on. He wanted to also give himself some benefit of the doubt because he knew that his emotions were coloring what was going on. He didn’t like being not able to give Nikita the time he wanted to give her. She had so much fun on the trail ride yesterday with the staff. Sarah and Jay, who had the most experience on horses, were impressed with Nikita’s skills and both sensed that Nikita could possibly ride circles around them if she wanted to show off. Mark was impressed that she didn’t expect anyone else to take care of her horse and that she had helped out with a couple of the horses that were given some of the lesser experienced staff some difficulty with finishing the grooming.
Madeline’s eyes expanded and then she winced. “Oh crap… they are being awful to Nikita, aren’t they? Please tell me that they are nothing like you were those first couple days… I mean, they have to realize how many girls are able to come to camp this year because of Nikita…”
“Madeline,” Michael’s voice was loud to break her words. “It hasn’t been as bad as you think… Hillinger was being childish… but I’ve had words with him.”
“Words?” Madeline’s word was curt and short. She hated when Michael sometimes took the discipline into his own hands. Last year Hillinger had to paint all of the insides of the latrines when he had made some rude comments about Sarah. “I just told him to chill it out. That was yesterday and that seems to have worked.”
Madeline sighed and then closed her eyes. “And I haven’t been around to keep her, Davenport and Kate busy.”
“Davenport has been busy with busting out the Band-Aids,” Michael pointed out and Madeline shook her head. “And Kate?”
“Shopping.”
“Nikita?” Madeline asked and Michael shrugged his shoulders. “I think she has been reading… she went for a trail ride yesterday.”
“So she is bored,” Madeline declared quickly. “If she was upset about what was going on, she would let us know.”
“You haven’t been here, Madeline,” Michael pointed out as he just wanted his sister to stop. She stared at him in horror and covered her mouth. “I didn’t mean…”
“She doesn’t think anything is wrong,” Michael tried to console his sister, but she was taking it hard. She hated when she disappointed herself and Madeline had told herself that Nikita was going to need some help once staff started to arrive on site. She knew better and should have been around. “I could have found time to spend with her… and I’m going to do that.”
“You already have enough on your plate!” Madeline dropped her hand from her mouth, finding it stunning that Michael was offering this. She shook her head from side to side. “I’m sure that I can work something out… I’m sure that Nikita would be able to help with creative arts… writers are abound to be here… and special events may be interesting.”
“She has her own personal horse to use,” Michael shrugged his shoulders as he sighed. “I like being around her.”
“Oh no,” Madeline wagged her finger at her younger brother. “That’s the books talking.”
“I know that it isn’t.”
“Please tell me that you haven’t kissed her,” Madeline spoke and she stared at her brother. She knew and tossed her hands up in the air. “Michael! I thought you were the master of no summer romances!”
“I don’t think that this is a summer romance,” Michael shook his head as he stood up. He needed some fresh air right now. “I’m going to go take care of some things… the bills are mostly done.”
“Michael… we are going to talk about this…”
“No, we aren’t,” Michael swung his head from side to side. He hugged his sister. “Congratulations… and we should really have a party some Saturday night.”
Madeline tried to reach out to stop her brother, but he slithered out of the office quickly. She shook her head and tried to figure out what had just happened.
And prayed that Michael had only kissed Nikita Wirth.
