“Please don’t look at me that way, Kate,” Nikita shook her head as she winced while getting up onto the table to get heat for her knee. However, Nikita felt like she needed heat for her entire body.
“I’m not saying a word,” Kate declared as she grabbed the heating pad for Nikita’s knee and paused. She reached in and grabbed another one. There was no reason for Nikita to have pain while a bit of heat would help. “Although you should think about moderation.”
Nikita narrowed her eyes as she lifted her leg and then settled her knee into the heat. She turned her head to see Kate laying one down on a wedge and placing it right behind Nikita’s back. “I don’t need that.”
“You may not need it… but it is something nice,” Kate played off and Nikita leaned back with a soft sigh. She did need it.
Kate would normally leave Nikita alone during the warming up of her leg but there was no one else in the center right now and Nikita still looked like something was on her mind. “It’s ok, Nikita… We all have mornings like this…”
Nikita flashed her eyes over to Kate and turned scarlet red with embarrassment. “Michael said you’d be able to tell.”
“And I’m jealous,” Kate pointed out as she did not want Nikita to think that this was a bad thing. Nikita lost the blush and looked at Kate. Kate chuckled. “You have Michael… that man is hot, Nikita.”
Nikita thought about it and smiled. Kate could see that Nikita was feeling easier about what she was feeling right now. With a sigh, Kate rolled closer to the table. “And I have nothing against what you two adults do at night… especially since it does not have appeared to impact your knee.”
Nikita looked at her leg and smiled gently. “He was so careful about it… kept me from putting too much weight on it… just being so gentle with the knee.”
The phone was ringing and Kate looked around. Nikita always came in around lunch time and that was good. It meant that most of the others were out and Nikita liked it that way. It made it easier for when Nikita’s other friends and family would come back and just chat while Nikita worked at rehabilitation. It was good for Nikita. But it also meant that Kate was left to the phone.
Motioning to the phone, Kate stood up and dashed towards the desk were the nearest phone was. “Hello this is…”
“Hi Kate… It’s Jurgen,” Jurgen interrupted Kate before she could do the formal greeting for the center. Kate sat down and pulled at her hair while shaking her head. “Hi Jurgen.”
“How are you?”
Kate frowned as she was confused. “Do you need to talk about Nikita?”
“No,” Jurgen replied back and that was simply it.
“Do you need something else?” Kate asked and then there was a gasp on the other side. “Jurgen? What’s going on?”
“I was wondering… if you would like to join me for some drinks tonight,” Jurgen finally asked and Kate turned away from Nikita so she could only see her back if she was watching. “Is this like a date?”
“Its drinks between friends,” Jurgen shakily replied and Kate smiled.
It was a date.
“Are you going to pick me up?” Kate questioned as she just wanted to see how badly Jurgen wanted to go out. It was a risky question but Kate still asked it.
“Ah… sure… About seven?” Jurgen countered and Kate grinned broadly. While she had respected Jurgen as a doctor, she had always felt something for him that she had been sure that only she had felt. Now Kate had a feeling that Jurgen was so busy being the best ER doctor around that he could start see other things going on in his life.
“That works for me,” Kate responded as the bell went off. It did not seem as if they had been talking that long and then Kate realized that there must have been really long pauses in their conversations. Turning to look at the table, Nikita, who would normally be already pulling the heat off of her knee, was asleep. A few more minutes wouldn’t hurt Nikita.
“I have to go, Jurgen… I’ll see you tonight,” Kate finished the conversation, suddenly worrying about her decision. She may have just said yes to Jurgen’s invite because she saw how happy Nikita was today.
But damn, Kate wanted to be sore some more soon because a special man found it too difficult to get his hands off of her.
