“You should get home soon. She looks wiped out,” Walter commented as he settled down next to Michael during the third quarter of the late football game. Michael looked back into the den where Nikita was struggling to keep her eyes open while playing some board game with Aggie and the ladies. “She said now earlier…”

“What she says and what she needs may be two different things. It’s still up to you to help her make the right decision,” Walter grumbled and Michael leaned forward. He was moving slightly back and forth and Walter stopped him. “Or are you worried about going home to be alone with her?”

“No,” Michael declared as he shook his head back and forth, but Walter wasn’t so sure about Michael’s reaction. He heard the other men in the room groan as a wide receiver missed a beautiful pass for a touchdown, but Walter was focused on Michael. “What’s going on?”

“She isn’t the only one who remembered things today,” Michael mumbled as he took the beer that he had been nursing and stormed out of the room. Walter knew that he wasn’t going to get Michael and Nikita to go home yet and he knew that he wasn’t going to watch this game at this point in time. He had just gotten down onto the couch to find himself standing up and going after Michael.

“Can’t you leave me alone?” Michael questioned as he stood on the front porch, staring out to the street that was vacant. Walter walked up to Michael and shook his head back and forth. “You are talking to your partner… maybe we aren’t in police work together right now… but I never let up on my partners. My first partner was like that… never letting me give him any bullshit… not even after he had been out for ten years… do don’t get me a line of bull right now.”

Michael turned and leaned against the brick column. He shoved his hands into his jeans as a way to protect his body from the crisp air that he had forgotten about when he stormed outside. “Mine aren’t bad memories… no worries about that.”

“Maybe no worries about the memories… but maybe there is some guilt there?”

“Guilt?”

“Guilt because you had good memories related to this holiday and Nikita didn’t?” Walter questioned although he was shocked that he had to even ask the question. Michael knew it. Michael knew it in his heart and that was the reason why he was out here on the porch.

“It’s not fair,” Michael finally whispered as his shoulders slumped and showed defeat. “She deserves happiness….”

“I think she is getting that with you, Michael,” Walter commented as he pulled Michael back inside and right into the kitchen. It was too damn cold to be standing outside. “She is happy.”

Michael walked to the coffee maker and took a cup and took a long sip. “I can’t tell her what I remembered today… we were at the table, just starting to eat and I could remember my parents... Pierre-Henri and Amélie Samuelle were joyful parents. They had this big table of food and both said that they were thankful for me…”

“And you want to keep that from Nikita?” Walter asked and Michael nodded his head. “It will only point out what she didn’t have.”

“I think she knows what she didn’t have,” Walter fired back as he didn’t like this idea at all. “Look, Michael… you and Nikita have been through hell but I thought it was because neither of you were into hiding things from each other.”

Michael thought about. Nikita could have never told him about her finding out that she couldn’t have children. She tried to do it and she couldn’t do it. But this was different. This wasn’t something that Nikita needed to know. Nikita never needed to know that Michael could remember that one Thanksgiving when Michael was a child, probably when he was five or six, his parents ate their entire dinner, with well dressed friends and family, with handmade turkey hats on their head. “This is completely different.”

Walter couldn’t disagree more. “Don’t start putting up barriers between you and Nikita.”

“There are none,” Michael announced and Walter shook his head as it was clear that Michael was just too stubborn to see what he could see. “And when are you going to tell her that you hired Birkoff?”

“No one is to know that he is working for me,” Michael turned cold and stone-like when he stared at Walter. Walter shook his head back and forth. “I’m the one that is using Birkoff as a consultant for the police department, Michael… clearly you had to know that.”

“Our projects for him are completely different,” Michael defended his decision. He still was trying to work out the details, but things were starting to look up. The third floor that Michael had hoped to clear out was done by offering a bigger office on the second floor to the one tenant. Yes, Michael had to give that bigger office for the price of the smaller office, but it was ok as it would give a large floor for Michael to offer to Kate. First he was going to just work on furnishing it and remodeling, which would start on Monday. He had yet to talk to Mick or Jurgen about office space, but they were on the next on the list.

“Michael, did you even tell Nikita that you bought a building?” Walter leaned against the island and stared at Michael as if he was interrogating Michael. That was not what Walter had intended on doing, but Michael was not acting like himself and he had to be called to action. The things he was doing right now were going to make it difficult for him and Nikita.

Michael put the coffee cup into the sink and turned on the water. Walter shook. “Heavens to Murgatroyd! You are going to screw this thing up between you and Nikita because you aren’t listening to anyone… you need to just tell her things that you are doing. Nikita wants to know about it all.”

“You are over-reacting, Walter,” Michael calmly stated as he rubbed his hands together. “She has enough other things in her life to wonder about. I can see it in her eyes that she has things that she is processing. I don’t need to add to those things.”

“Maybe she is processing things because you haven’t let her in to what you are doing,” Walter offered up another opinion of what is going on. “She has told you a lot of things, Michael. That can’t be easy for her.”

Michael stiffed and moved towards the door of the kitchen. “I’m going to take Nikita home… I think I’m going to rethink Christmas.”

“Why the hell would you do that?” Walter hissed and Michael stood firm at the door. “If you are going to question everything that I’m doing… I won’t stand for it. I’m doing what I feel is right.”

“It’s not right,” Walter shook his head back and forth. “And maybe you should get into a session or two with Mick and Nikita…”

“Nikita needs him more,” Michael turned on his heels and left, going right to Nikita. Walter was not going to follow Michael and continue this. Nikita did not need to know that Walter was upset at Michael because Walter wouldn’t be able to lie to Nikita about what was going on.

Michael had to see that not telling Nikita was a bad thing to do.
