Kate locked the door to the center and pocketed the key. The broken machine couldn’t be repaired and it did not seem as if the owner was ready to fork over the money needed for a new one. Kate was going to have to find a way to use other machines for the same type of exercise. She did not like it one bit, but she was determined to leave work behind.
Nikita’s knee was doing better on this Tuesday, but it was not as good as it had been before Thanksgiving. Kate was almost sure that it could have been even better if Nikita had not looked so dull. Something was bothering Nikita and Kate was sure that it had everything to do with why Nikita wasn’t sleeping. Nikita was picked up by Mick so Kate was sure hoping that Mick worked some magic.
“Do you have some time for some coffee across the street?” Michael’s voice broke through the crisp air. Kate was about to make a run for her car when she turned to find Michael standing there, bundled in a heavier wool coat, which Kate should have been wearing. It had gotten very nippy since this morning. She hated the winter.
“Is this about Nikita?” Kate inquired and Michael shook his head. “I have something I want to offer… Please, just a cup of coffee?”
It was cold and Kate nodded her head. She followed Michael across the empty street to a small café. They had ok coffee but Kate ordered hot chocolate and slid into a booth with Michael. “I’m pretty darn confused about this… and I think you did that on purpose.”
“What do you think about this?” Michael questioned as he pushed a leather portfolio across the table. Kate opened up the folder and felt the air being sucked out of her chest with what she saw.
“That’s the Magnum Series 5000 equipment,” Kate looked up at Michael and he shrugged his shoulders slightly. “It’s been customized… studies and researchers have gotten this equipment computerized so it can estimate that the task is being done correctly by the right person.”
Michael reached over and flipped the page so she could see those specifics. Kate shook her head. “Michael… why do you have this information?”
“Look at the next page,” Michael directed Kate and kept himself from answering the question.
“These are Euro Bo-Bath Electric Hi-Lo Tables… they are my favorite…” Kate stated as she took the bait and flipped to the next page. “This traction unit… it’s been in universities… it’s not even being mass produced…”
“The next page, Kate,” Michael continued to guide Kate through what he had given her.
“MicroFet2® Manual Muscle Tester… Korebalance…Fluid C-XT Convertible Ergometer…Nautilus® EV7.16 & EV7.18 Ellipticals…AeroPilates Pro XP686… Whitehall Sports Whirlpools…A Galaxy Pool!” Kate rattled out as her voice got louder as she flew through the pages, seeing details but not much. She didn’t see that this equipment was all that she said, but they had been supped up, given the all-star treatment. It was the cutting edge of the cutting edge. Kate tossed the folder back to Michael. “What is all of this about?”
“All of that has been delivered to a building that I own,” Michael pulled out another folder and handed it out. Kate turned the pages, saw the address, and then on the next page so the inside with the equipment inside.
“The Galaxy Pool can’t go in for two weeks,” Michael shrugged his shoulders as he could see the sparkle in Kate’s eyes. Then Michael felt very guilty for the way that he had handled this. He was not a man who wanted to control everything. With that guilt building, Michael reached forward and pulled at the folder. “I’m sorry, Kate… I didn’t mean to manipulate you… I just realized what I did… I know that this is everything that you may ever want…”
Kate was touched by Michael’s confession to what he had done. In honesty, it really wasn’t on her mind what Michael had done. She knew what Michael had laid out in front of her and she was taken in. Especially after what has been going on for months. “Are you doing this just for Nikita?”
Michael shook his head from side to side. “I have a building now… half of it was empty. You are a great physical therapist but I have heard you on the phone… I know that it will benefit Nikita, but I also know that it will help many others.”
Kate reached over and took the folder from Michael’s hands. “I’m sure that there are contracts and things.”
“This isn’t going through MJS. This is between you and me. If you want it, it’s all yours,” Michael stated and Kate jerked her head. “For how much, Michael?”
“I want you to have the space,” Michael replied and Kate shook her head back and forth. There was no way that she could just take this for free. There was way too much money spent into this. “How much of a percentage are you going to take?”
“I’m not in it for the business. I want to help you start what you don’t have the means to start. If you hire staff to help you that is better than me getting that money back” Michael declared as he folded his hands on the table. Kate folded the folder. “You have to take something back from me.”
“It will be a difficult start, Kate,” Michael warned and Kate nodded her head. “I know… but I can’t just take this, Michael.”
“When you start turning a profit, you can pay rent on the space… and then after you have five staff hired and making a profit, how about I get 5% of the profit,” Michael offered and Kate leaned back and held the folders. She wanted to pinch herself for this dream was reality. Michael Samuelle was so generous and it wasn’t just for Nikita. Nikita motivated Michael a lot, but this was about being a truly decent man. Most rich people would never do this sort of thing without there being lots of strings attached. “Do I name this after you for being the generous donor?”
“No,” Michael shook his head back and forth. “But if you need help marketing, I think that Belinda used to dabble in some of that.”
Kate laughed as she couldn’t believe that even after giving her this space and equipment; Michael was offering more help and assistance. Taking a moment to sip her hot chocolate, Kate folded the folders and looked at Michael. “Does Nikita know?”
Michael shook his head from side to side. “I wanted to make sure that you would say yes.”
“Did you doubt that I would?” Kate inquired and Michael slyly grinned. As he had admitted, he had manipulated the situation by putting the dream situation in her lap. With the state of the art equipment that Michael had in this building, it was not going to be hard to promote the new physical therapy center. “There are lots of hoops to go through, Michael. Most physical therapy these days are paid for by insurance companies. That takes a lot of time to be examined and authorized to be a provider.”
Without hesitation, Michael pulled out three business cards from his coat pocket and handed them over to Kate. “I believe that these men can help you.”
They were heads of the three top insurance companies in the area. Kate felt tears spring in her eyes. “Michael…”
“You deserve to work at a place like this. You are too good to stay where you are,” Michael spoke and Kate started to nod her head. “Yes… yes… I’ll take you up on this offer… because I’d be insane not too.”
“Good,” Michael patted Kate’s hands. This was a good thing and the building would soon be full of people again. That was always a good thing.
And he hoped that Nikita would understand why.
