When the reports had gotten back to Paul about loud construction noises, his heart knew that he was not going to like what he found. He did not see anything wrong in the hallways, so he knew where the entry point had been made. Still, it was a shock to walk into Madeline’s office and see the furniture moved about and drywall dust to be over all of the usually impeccably cleaned cherry wood antiques.
The hole was ugly and gaping. It was a reminder of something that was supposed to stay covered up forever. That had been the planned and Paul did not know how the plan had just washed away like it had never been talked about. For years Paul reinforced how important it was for this chapter to be closed forever.
But there it was, the gaping hole was the gateway to the past and most of Paul’s being wanted to run away and wish that the hole was gone. The other part feared about what got released by allowing that hole to be open.
A small chance was there that the hole was created but no one entered that dark space. Walking in that direction, Paul stopped as he saw the large flashlight with a handprint on it. He picked it up and flicked it on, testing that it worked. He stared at the hole for along time and finally ducked and entered.
It was not like stepping back in time. The sheets covering things held back those memories, but Paul could feel as if he was intruding on something that should have been left alone. It was hard to imagine that he had spent weeks of his life in this area and when he found it hard to leave this area. He knew what he was doing and he was firm to his convictions.
Until now.
The metal table had been uncovered and Paul stopped at it. It was cold and sterile, even after all of the years of being hid away. Paul touched it but pulled his hand away as quickly as he had touched it as if it had shocked him with a course of electricity. He was never a man to think that memories of the past had haunted him, but right now, he wondered if his actions for years had something to do with what happened back in these rooms.
Turning away, going to a place that did not sting as much as this spot did, Paul stopped as he saw Madeline on the floor, disheveled and with a sledgehammer beside her. He had thought that this was the doing of Davenport, who had finally figured out that there was empty space and had been researching it. He had not expected to find Madeline, which made this all even worse. “Madeline?”
Madeline lifted her head and stared at him with her tear soaked face. “All I wanted back then… was to have a baby… to have a daughter… You gave me Nikita instead.”
Paul squatted to look at Madeline. “You know that we had to do what we had to do with Nikita.”
“Did we? Is that your answer?” Madeline cocked her head to the side and stared at him. “You knew I wanted to be a mother… you preyed on my need to protect someone… you said that if I helped with Nikita… that you would think about helping me have a baby…”
“Aren’t you glad we didn’t?” Paul asked as he sat down and looked at Madeline. Madeline shook her head back and forth. Then she stopped. “I wouldn’t have wanted my child to find out what kind of monsters’ it had for parents… for that, I’m grateful.”
Paul swallowed hard. “We did what we had to do, Madeline.”
“We were wrong,” Madeline announced and Paul chilled. Madeline had always seen that they had done what they had to do. “Madeline, Nikita needed us to make that decision. She is successful because of us.”
“Not successful… not safe,” Madeline spoke and Paul’s eyes narrowed. “What caused you to break into here?”
Madeline looked at the sledgehammer. “She needed to get the truth.”
“No,” Paul shook his head back and forth. “You agreed…”
“She had really bad night terrors, Paul… no matter what we do, they came back… they always came back and they always came back worse… what we did made it worse!” Madeline pushed her legs and stood up. Paul turned his head and saw what was missing. “Where is the computer, Madeline?”
Madeline stood there and rubbed her arms. For hours she had been waiting for Paul to arrive. Now she wasn’t scared any longer of him. “I did what was right.”
“What happened to the computer, Madeline?” Paul questioned as he got up on his knees and then stood up. Madeline stared at him. “I gave it to them to help her.”
“Them?”
“Davenport was to take it to Michael,” Madeline announced. Paul shook his head. “They’ll never find anything… it’s encrypted… because I knew that someday… you would do this.”
Madeline tapped her foot up and down. “Paul.. let them undo what we did.”
“I won’t allow that to happen,” Paul declared as he stepped away from Madeline. “You should have gotten her to come back.”
“She is in love with Michael. That girl isn’t going to come back,” Madeline pushed at her hair and looked up at the ceiling. “And she is going to know… that the only one who tried to be her mother… was just as bad of a monster… as her biological mother was.”
Paul shook his head. “We did what we had to do.”
“And yet, you never got the answers you needed either,” Madeline strode towards Paul and touched his face. “You never found if she was yours or not, did you?”
