There was something there in the dark. It wasnt seen, it wasnt distinguished, it was invisible but it was there. It was growing and looming, and Nikita couldnt get away. She didnt know where she was going, she was walking backwards and unable to turn her head back to see where she was going.

Her legs hurt so badly as she moved. Her back was on fire. Something was doing this to her, something in the dark. It was growing and growing, trying to engulf her and suck her within the darkness, but Nikita didnt want to go.

She couldnt hear her own voice, but she was starting to hear something. It was some sort of muffled beat, perhaps the heartbeat of the thing that was out there, bearing down her. But it couldnt be heartbeat because this did not seem like something real. It was a monster and it was closing in on her.

Suddenly, Nikita couldnt move backwards any longer. Her path had her pressed against something icily cold that contrasted painfully against the heat that was burning her back. Nikita thought that she raised her hands, but she couldnt see them or feel them any longer.

Finally her scream she could hear.

Nikita woke with sweat dripping down her pale face and her heart racing as if she had just finished a marathon. Her muscle twitched as if she had been running just as far, trying to get away. She closed her eyes as she tried to take stock of what was going on around her.

The day had been a great day. Setting off with a backpack each, Michael and Nikita took a trail guide and went in search. Neither of them really knew how far that they had walked, but they had enjoyed the trails. They saw deer and other animals in the beginnings of the changing of the leaves. It was beautiful looking up at the trees, seeing the sun making the colorful orange, red, and yellow leaves twinkle with colors of warmth.

Around lunch they had found a larger creek that led to a pretty distinct waterfall. They settled down in a clearing not far and ate their sandwiches with the peaceful sound of the water dropping down against the rocks. The fresh air was all that they needed.

Knowing that they had walked a long way, they turned back not long after lunch. Neither really spoke as they walked side by side. They passed some other hikers now and then, but just being out there in nature made all of the things that were going on vanish away like a silent movie well past its prime.

Michael insisted on making dinner and sent Nikita off to get some groceries. He made a pretty quick pasta with veggies and cheese sauce. It stuck to Nikitas stomach in a good way and she happily made each of them huge banana split sundaes several hours after dinner and right before they enjoyed a movie together.

Nikita had thought that she would sleep like a baby due to all of the activity. She should have. She needed to talk to Madeline about all of this. It made no sense about why these were getting more frequent as there was no basis for Nikita to have nightmares like this.

It was as Nikita was rubbing her face that she realized that she probably did not wake up from hearing her scream. It was Michael who was screaming.

Nooooo! Michael rasped loudly with sobs as Nikita rounded the corner and into Michaels room. She looked at him as he was clenching the sheets with tight fists. She turned on the light and saw that it did nothing to wake up Michael. No. No. It couldnt have happened. No

Michael was dreaming of something. The man that didnt dream was clearly in a nightmare and Nikita had to make a decision. She could learn something more by watching Michael through this or she could try to bring him out of it and hoped that Michael would remember something that scared him so much.

I didnt I couldnt protect no Michael rasps turned painfully hoarse and almost pitiful. Nikita felt tears stinging against her eyes, she couldnt watch this and she made the decision that it was time to bring Michael out of this. Michael. Its Nikita Its ok open up your eyes

Michael was so tense as he was almost contracting every one of his muscles. She moved closer and carefully stroked at Michaels face, knowing that he could react in a bad way. Michael come on you are having a nightmare listen to my voice

No no

Michael shook his head from side to side. He couldnt even find the strength to talk any more, each sound being more and more animalistic.

Nikita pushed the hair behind Michaels face and rubbed his cheek. Michael wake up

Michael snapped and pushed Nikita roughly away as he shot out of the terror and found himself gasping on the bed, unsure of why the light was on and what had just happened. It was when he turned to see Nikita in pain against the bedside table that he had pushed her roughly into that Michael noticed how tired he was, the tears on his face, and how much his body ached.

Nikita blinked her eyes and focused on Michael, caring not about what had just happened. It was a possibility that Nikita knew when she reached out and touched Michael. She would do it again if he stopped him from being like that. She focused right onto Michael. You were having a nightmare.

Michael rubbed his face and looked at the damp sheets and clothing that he was in. He never had woken up in this situation. Something had caused this to happen and he looked over to Nikita. I dont remember any of it.

Nikita had been afraid of that. She moved over to the bed and pushed away the sheets and settled there next to Michael. You are getting there this is a good start.

Michael looked over the bedside table and saw a frame that was broken. He looked at the damage and shook his head. He hated that he had gotten violent. He gazed over to Nikita and saw the red on the back of her forearm. God you are bleeding

Nikita hadnt noticed it, the whole series of events happening in a way that she knew that she had no control of. She looked and shrugged her shoulders. A small cut

I did that to you

I scared you, Nikita countered as she saw nothing wrong with what Michael had done. I would have done the same thing you were in a nightmare.

Michael pushed at the sheets and stood up. He felt sticky and he was going to jump into a shower but not until he cleaned up this mess. Come on Ill clean that.

Nikita knew better than to fight with Michael right now. He needed to do this to feel better about what had happened. He couldnt remember what had scared him so badly so he had to do something that he felt was productive, which was now taking care of her.

Finding the first aid kit, Michael moved quickly and it wasnt until he was done, that he looked at Nikita and saw that she was pale and looked like something had ravaged her. Im sorry

Nikita shook her head back and forth. I wasnt sleeping well, Michael none of this is your fault.

Michael sighed as he slipped beside Nikita, energy draining from him quickly. Their first night here, after he gave Nikita a massage, they both fell asleep on the couch, and peacefully slept. Michael wasnt sure, but that could have been the best sleep that he had ever gotten. I dont remember the dream

You are starting to have them its a good sign no matter how bad you feel right now, Nikita pointed out as she mentioned nothing of hers and how she wished that she could forget that feeling of the darkness coming in to eat her up alive. She could not burden Michael with any of this. We may want to put a tape recorder in your room you may start to talk in your sleep it can be a good tool to try.

Michael nodded his head as he yawned. I dont want to go back in there.

You dont have too

Will you stay out here with me? Michael inquired and Nikita nodded her head up and down.

And silently sighed in relief that she didnt have to go back to her own bed.
