Grady rubbed his forehead as he walked out of the bedroom. Jurgen was an awful patient but he was simply the worst when he had many others that he was thinking about. Trying to keep Jurgen away from thinking about others was almost a full time job and Grady had been doing somewhat of a good job until Jurgen checked his messages and heard one from Nikita. Grady didn’t know what was said and what was going on, but Jurgen practically fought him to get past Grady at the door. But Jurgen’s body was weak and he needed to rest. Grady soon got Jurgen back in bed and immediately took the cell phone and all other phones out of the room.
Jurgen needed to rest.
The house phone rang and Grady turned quickly to grab it. “Hello?”
“Hello, Grady… I looked over the films that you sent me,” a dear friend, Dr. Yonkers, immediately spoke with her gentle Southern drawl voice. Grady leaned against the wall and sighed. “Nikita Wirth’s ankle films…”
“Yes… I tried you at your office and they said that you were out for the day,” Tina spoke to her old medical school friend. “I was taking a chance calling you at home.”
“Jurgen is ill today and he is wearing on my nerves. If I could, I’d sedate him or strap him down,” Grady admitted as he rolled his shoulders back. “So… if you are calling me about the films…”
“I’m calling because you are right… What kind of orthopedic doctor does that hospital have on rotation there? You didn’t send the whole medical record of the visit… I sure hope that a resident at least looked at these… and not an intern!” Tina declared firmly and Grady blinked his eyes. Tina was upset so something was missed on the films.
“Tina, is this a good news situation or a bad news situation? Nikita Samuelle hasn’t had much going for her right now when it has come to this ankle,” Grady declared as he just needed the facts.
“I think its good news… I’d like to get an MRI done of the ankle… that should have been done. What they may think is a break… may be only a hairline… and a very faint hairline at that… What did they do? Put her in a boot cast?”
“No, traditional cast… can’t get wet… kind of cast,” Grady growled. If this was just a hairline fracture, there was really no reason for Nikita to even be off of her feet and on crutches.
“Was it a walking cast at least?”
“No,” Grady mumbled as he was so thankful that he thought to send this along to Tina Yonkers.
“Get me the full medical report from the hospital… and get that woman to me… after sending her in for an MRI… and let’s send her somewhere not associated with the hospital,” Tina declared and Grady sighed. “I’ll be happy to pass this news along…”
“I should be able to get her into a walking cast at least… one that can be removed… I just want to be sure about ligament damage… that’s more dangerous in ankles than the bones,” Tina finished up the conversation and Grady held the phone in relief. This would be good for Nikita. Maybe this was the turning point.
When the phone rang again, Grady pulled it up and laughed, “Tina, I couldn’t have called that quickly.”
“Grady?” Walter’s voice questioned. Grady shook his head. “Look, Walter… Jurgen is sick… but I have good news, or possibly good news for Nikita… I had a second opinion done… can I talk to her?”
“You are going to have to help me find her,” Walter grumbled and Grady frowned. “Find her?”
“She went for a walk.”
Grady knew that Tina said that Nikita could be in a walking cast, but Nikita knew nothing about this second opinion. Did the hospital change their minds and do a second opinion themselves? “On her crutches?”
“Yes,” Walter huffed. “Thanks to that good-for-absolutely-nothing-stupid-head-Birkoff.”
“Is this why Jurgen was so insistent on leaving his sickbed?” Grady inquired and Walter sucked in some air. “Sickbed? He didn’t say he was sick.”
“Yep, running a fever… something that can’t get close to that house… not with the girls,” Grady announced as he rubbed his forehead. “She couldn’t have gotten far… stop her and have her call me. Dr. Tina Yonkers wants her to get an MRI and thinks that the ankle isn’t as bad off as the ER made it sound.”
“You underestimate Nikita when she is upset,” Walter grumbled as he hung up. Grady took a deep breath and carried the phone. He suspected that Jurgen probably heard most of his conversation and he couldn’t risk that while he was getting chicken soup ready for Jurgen that he wouldn’t try to sneak out of the room and get the phones. Grady wished that there was a secret injection he could give Jurgen to make him well, because it certainly seemed as if he was needed right now.
