“Joey, you are getting so fast!” Nikita exclaimed as she walked behind her eldest daughter while carrying Aleshia in her arms. They were on their way to the kitchen for lunch to have lunch. Joey stopped and turned towards her mother. She smiled and raised her arms. “Up!”
“Keep walking,” Nikita laughed. She was pretty nimble on her feet with the air cast on her foot, but she knew better than to try to carry both of her daughters at the same time. Joey was just too unpredictable to do such and she knew that her daughter was just going to scurry off to the kitchen now that Walter had heard them. “Is that my little Sugar out there?”
Those words did the trick and Joey went quickly towards the kitchen. Nikita was thankful that her daughter was so easily redirected and Nikita was pleased to see Walter had picked her up by the time Nikita got into the kitchen.
“We are having ooey-gooey grilled cheese,” Belinda announced as she placed the small plate on Joey’s high chair that Walter had already slid the young girl into. Joey smiled brightly and looked up at Belinda until the older woman gave the girl a kiss on the nose. Joey giggled and laughed as Nikita slipped into a chair and slid Aleshia into the bouncing chair that was already at the table.
“Is it ok if I join you?” Phillip inquired as he ambled into the room. Nikita nodded her head and looked at the seat across from her and Aleshia. It had been some amount of time since Phillip had joined them for any meal. Nikita had seen him in passing, but Phillip has been really busy on things of late. He was helping with the security layout for the new house and pointing out areas that needed to be watched while the plans were being developed.
“Where have you been lately?” Walter asked as he looked over at Phillip. He looked tired and like he needed a break.
“Since Derrick Grant came back to the States, it has been hard for him. I’m still his sponsor and I’ve spent a lot of time with him,” Phillip admitted as he glanced at Nikita. He knew that she had some worries about Derrick Grant over previous meetings with him, but Phillip was sure that was all because of the other things that were going on with Phillip.
“I heard that he was trying to get Conchita back,” Belinda commented and Phillip sighed and nodded his head. “But he was trying to do it as getting her back as an employee… but he doesn’t really want her as an employee… that’s the problem.”
“He sounds lonely,” Nikita remarked and Phillip frowned. That was the case. “I think he is using meetings and me as his sponsor to get out and to have a social life… I just know that he was sick so I don’t want to push him either.”
“Maybe you should introduce him to someone… like George. I think George is still around,” Belinda stated as she looked at Walter for confirmation. Walter nodded his head. “I haven’t heard from George in a long time.”
“Why offer George? Maybe you should bring him over here,” Nikita commented and the table went silent. Nikita looked around and finally shrugged her shoulders. “Not to be my friend or anything… but I think all of you have something in common and should get to know him.”
“No,” Phillip swung his head from side to side. “He knows who’s house this is, Nikita… I know Phillip wouldn’t want to come here.”
“Without meeting with me and Michael?” Nikita questioned and Phillip nodded his head up and down. It was some sort of reverse of meet the parents, but it was true.
“Then maybe he should come over for dinner this weekend. Maybe we’ll clear the air,” Nikita commented and the table again was silent as they stared at Nikita. Nikita shifted in her seat and leaned forward. “Look, we are different and he was sick. Neither of us were at our best and it is amazing that we haven’t run into Derrick Grant more often given our businesses. I’d rather handle this in private than having it happen sometime in public.”
“Can’t you just keep on avoiding him?” Walter was stunned and not going to just let Nikita to invite Derrick Grant over.
“He is friends with Paul… I’m surprised that I haven’t run into him sooner. The twins will have birthdays, Walter… I’d rather get this over with,” Nikita tore at her sandwich and then took a big bite.
What Nikita was saying made sense, but it did not mean that Walter wanted it to happen. It just made things harder in Walter’s mind to process. But maybe this meant that if Nikita was willing to have dinner with Derrick Grant that she would then rethink her decision to not look at the test results. Walter knew that Michael was worried about that decision and was worried about what would happen if Roberta landed in Las Vegas some day. Maybe this was a good thing.
“You seem to be ready to get back to work with this new attitude you’ve had,” Phillip tried to turn the conversation somewhere else. He knew that Nikita’s offer stood and that she would force the issue again at another time. Phillip was unsure if Derrick would accept the offer but that was for another time to worry about.
Nikita rubbed at Aleshia’s stomach and nodded her head. She hated to say it, but she was already planning to start putting in some more hours at home and to start going to the office at least one half day every three days. It was going to happen quickly and she had been already doing a lot with the new house plans since she got off of the crutches.
“But you have physical therapy,” Walter pointed out and Nikita laughed. “That’s an hour or two a day, three days a week. That won’t stop me from working.”
“Leave the girl be…. She is going to go back to work slowly. Plus, you love when we get to take care of the girls together.”
“As long as Nikita isn’t going to get someone like Madeline’s new ‘Manny’ to do the work we can do for her,” Walter announced and Nikita rolled her eyes. Ever since Walter met Oakley, Walter had been vocal about the possibility that Nikita and Michael would bring someone in to do the same for them.
“Oakley is great with the twins,” Nikita declared as she knew that Walter was unnaturally hard on Oakley. “And second, we have no room for another person to be in this house.”
“But at the new house…”
“I see no need to bring someone else in,” Nikita declared as she patted Walter’s hand. “We don’t need an Oakley when Joey and Aleshia have Grandma and Grandpa around.”
“And me,” Phillip added himself back into the mix. He hadn’t been able to do much of late but maybe things could change.
Belinda sat down and gave Joey some of her grilled cheese sandwich. Joey was happy just being around people so Nikita sighed and looked around the table. “Of course, if there was another baby…”
“Oh please dear god, please not you too!” Walter groaned and Nikita shook her head. “And when do you think there would be time for that to happen?”
Walter rolled his eyes and Nikita narrowed hers in response. She needed to find some time to have with her husband alone to remedy some of this situation, but that was not a conversation for now. “I would want you and Belinda to tell me if it gets to be too much. I never want to take advantage of you and Belinda… it isn’t fair to you two.”
“We love it,” Belinda commented as she looked right at Nikita to be sure that Nikita got the message, “And we would tell you.”
“Good,” Nikita nodded her head up and down before returning to finish off her sandwich.
The meal continued for a while until Nikita stood up to get a bottle for Aleshia and sat back down.
“So, Nikita… anything interesting that is going to happen at the Centre when you return?” Phillip was curious as he finished off his second sandwich. Nikita placed the bottle down and picked Aleshia up in her arms. She had pumped her milk earlier in the morning and was relieved that there was a bottle ready for her young daughter.
“I’m sure that Kate is going nuts trying to figure out a nice way to tell me that The Centre is out of space…”
“That’s great news!” Walter exclaimed and Joey instantly started to clap her hands. But then he frowned. “Why does that sound like it means more work?”
“It would be nothing if I was happy with what we had. But I’m concerned about a couple of the areas that are growing and with the way that SCII seems to be moving more and more headquarters types of activities here, SCII is going to run out of space,” Nikita explained even as Walter started to shake his head from side to side. “Sugar, that’s Michael’s worry.”
“It is mine,” Nikita chuckled as she looked at Aleshia. She had plans and they were already in the works, although Kate knew nothing about them. It was Nikita’s job to always be five steps ahead of what was needed. “I already own the parcels that surround The Centre. There is plenty of space…”
“God,” Walter groaned. “Don’t you or Michael know how to slow down?”
“I wouldn’t be happy,” Nikita replied back so easily that everyone knew that it was the truth. They hated it when Nikita was just sitting around with the broken ankle. That wasn’t Nikita. “And don’t worry… I know what I need to do to make this thing to smoothly… it is nothing like when I was putting The Centre together myself.”
“And what do you think Michael is going to think about this?” Walter challenged Nikita’s plans.
But Nikita held the trump card. “Walter, he already knows.”
