1)GIRLS NEED TO COMPETE IN THEIR CORRECT AGE DIVISIONS. Why even have age divisions if you’re going to allow girls to “bump up” or “fall back?” There is NO glory in a 10 year-old walking around with a Little Miss title, and it’s no fun for a 15 year old to lose to a 12 year-old in a 13-15 Age Division. (Yes, I understand that Majestic titles span across multiple age divisions, and I am okay with those, but age division titles ought to go to girls within that age span AS OF THE DATE OF THE PAGEANT.)
2) STOP WITH THE "BOUGHT" PAGEANT TITLES. Most of the time, these are called “People’s Choice.” How does mama putting a couple hundred dollars in her girl’s box make her the “People’s Choice?” If you want a true People’s Choice winner, allow the audience to vote by secret ballot for free, and charge all contestants a flat fee to enter for that title.
3) STOP ADDING/AWARDING TITLES THAT WEREN'T IN THE PAPERWORK. How do people know how to work for those if there’s no description of it in the paperwork? It makes the director look like he/she is playing favorites, and makes sure his/her favorite(s) get a crown. And don’t get me started about titles that are awarded by directorS AFTER crowning is supposedly over.
4) CHARGE EVERYONE THE SAME FEE TO ENTER YOUR PAGEANT. Stop offering bigger discounts to some girls than others. (No, I’m not talking about the discounts given if a girl wins a prelim. Those are fair.) I’m talking about directors allowing their friends in for almost nothing (and sometimes for free), yet charging others SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS to enter.
For the girl who gets to enter for free (or almost free), she has more money to spend on her wardrobe, hair and make up, which could put her at an unfair advantage over the girl who paid full price.
5)AND FOR CHRIST'S SAKE, STOP TRYING TO MIX GLITZ AND NATURAL, AND SAY THAT YOU'RE ALLOWING BOTH. Give us clear-cut directions about modeling and wardrobe, and tell us what you’re telling the judges to look for.
6)DOUBLE CROWNING? WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO DO THAT? Aside from pissing everybody off, let me point out one simple fact: A GIRL CAN’T WEAR 2 CROWNS AT ONCE. Why not spread the crowns out more? ***The more girls that have crowns, the more visibility for your pageant. ***
7) Oh yes (probably my biggest pet peave), and STOP ANNOUNCING WINNERS AND RUNNER UPS IN SUCH A WAY THAT WHEN A GIRL PLACES LAST IN HER DIVISION, IT'S OBVIOUS TO HER AND EVERYONE IN THE AUDIENCE. For example, if you only have 3 girls in a division, just announce the queen’s name and no runner-ups. Then allow the moms to find out privately where her daughter placed.
I’ve seen 7 year-olds realize that they were dead last in their division, after being called for 2nd RU out of a group of 3. I’ve seen girls be the only “Princess” in their group, while everyone else placed.
8) And lastly, I may be in the minority when I say this, but WE NEED TO GO BACK TO HAVING GIRLS UNDER CONTRACTS, OR AT LEAST prohibit them from holding more than one STATE title at a time. I mean, HOW MANY STATE TITLES DOES ONE GIRL NEED?
I see a lot of crown chasers that hardly do anything with their titles because their Saturdays are filled with competing in pageants and/or dance competitions. (I think dance competitions are great as it helps with Talent, but when the rest of their Saturdays are filled with competing in pageants, then community service and representing their titles falls by the wayside.)
I’m tired of seeing the same girls win over and over again, then not representing their titles except in photo op’s and parades. Give other girls a chance to win and experience being part of a state court! I would like to see fewer Crown Chasers on state courts, and more girls (and moms) who are willing to serve.
This post is in no way meant to bash any particular pageant system. These observations and opinions have been formed over MANY years of being in the pageant circuit, and competing in MANY different systems. No one system is perfect, and I know that directors can’t please everybody, but some of what is going on/has been going on for a while now has got to stop.
Directors: Set your rules and stick to them for everybody. Stop bending the rules just to get more contestants. I promise that you’ll make more money in the long run. When people leave your pageants pissed off because of girls competing in wrong age divisions, girls getting crowns that weren’t in the paperwork, they won’t return the next year.
The reasons stated above are why your numbers are falling more and more each year, and until these changes are made, expect to see your numbers continue to drop.
