But there's a lot of reasons for keeping a residence in the L.A. area. One, it's expensive to just give up a house and rent places whenever you need them. A part of that reason is for comfort. If you want to make sure you're going to live in reasonable comfort and be in a good, relatively crime-free area, it's best that you buy your own abode.

Another reason for Ryan keeping a house in California, of course, is for his career. Let's face it--Washington ain't exactly the movie and TV capital of the world. To make sure he can keep his hand in the business, he's GOT to be local. In most cases, whether it's for an actor, a writer or a producer, locality equals a career.

Then, I'd like to throw in something from a military perspective which may also apply to Ryan's acting career. His family doesn't NEED him in Washington. It's not vital to them to have Ryan at home all the time. In the military, wives grow used to the fact(and sometimes prefer) that their husbands aren't around the house every minute of the day. An occasional visit is just fine. The women become very self-sufficient, as do the children, and the husband doesn't really belong in the family unit after a certain amount of time.
