NBC is finalizing a deal for a six-episode order of the improv comedy series "Significant Others."

 The series is expected to premiere on the NBC-owned Bravo cable channel early next year with an eye toward moving on to NBC at a later point.

Based on a short by commercial director Robert Roy Thomas, "Significant Others" features improv actors posing as couples in therapy. Initially targeted for a summer launch on NBC, "Significant Others" was screened with the rest of the network's fall half-hour pilots in the spring.

The show was developed through NBC's alternative department, headed by executive vp Jeff Gaspin, who also oversees Bravo. He said "Significant Others" is a good example of how NBC will be able to use the arts-oriented Bravo as an incubator for potential new series.

"The idea of doing an unscripted sitcom is pretty unique. It's worth trying as an experiment," Gaspin said. "But especially with an idea like this, you don't want to test the waters in such a high-profile slot as an NBC sitcom (launch)."
