Imitation viagra seized
Kota Kinabalu: The Pharmacy Enforcement Unit of the State Health Department scored the biggest seizure of 420 packets of Chinese-made imitation Viagra worth some RM21,000 in a surprise raid on a room of a lodging house here on Monday afternoon.

Several years ago, the unit made a similar seizure of sex stimulants but from peddlers at tamu grounds and five-foot ways.

Monday’s raid at Jalan Pantai was led by the department’s Acting Principal Assistant Director of Pharmacy Enforcement Unit in Sabah, Dzafarullah Daud, with three enforcement personnel, assisted by six policemen from the Narcotics Division of the Kepayan police headquarters, following a public tip-off at 2pm.

The raiding team recovered a total of 21 boxes with labels in Chinese stating “Viagra” contents, each containing four diamond-shaped, blue-coloured tablets, similar to the original product, from a Chinese national in his 30s.

The pills were found to be available in dosages of 500mg (10 boxes), 300mg (five boxes) and 200mg (six boxes), sold at RM50 retail price and RM25 wholesale price per packet of four tablets.

According to a spokesman of the department, the suspect was arrested for investigations but released on police bail later.

He is in possession of an international passport and is a regular visitor here on business trips.

Some of the unregistered “Viagra” were found hidden in the cupboard and others under a pile of wristwatches in a huge box.

It was believed that the suspect was supplying other sex stimulants, in addition to the counterfeit Viagra, to five-foot way peddlers through runners.

The spokesman said the seized “Viagra” contains a scheduled poison or drug substance, known as “Sildenafil” which boosts male potency by extending the duration of erection to achieve sexual satisfaction.

The spokesman said the “Viagra” with dosages of between 200mg and 500mg could be harmful to health.

“Although the price is cheaper compared to the original ones, the imitation Viagra could be harmful to the public, as the doses are higher (up to 500mg) than the original Viagra manufactured by Pfizer, the patent holder of the sex stimulant, which has lower doses.”

He pointed out that those who have kidney problem, heart disease and hypertension have a high risk of endangering their health if they consume the imitation Viagra.

“Those who intend to take the genuine Viagra registered by the Ministry of Health must consult registered doctors first before taking it to ensure they are fit to take and healthy enough.”

It was noted that the Chinese instructions on the imitation Viagra labels stated it could be taken by both male or female, at least one or two hours before sexual intercourse.

Meanwhile, members of public who come across this imitation product are advised to alert the Pharmacy Department at 088-231609 so that prompt action can be taken to safeguard their health.

The suspect risks being charged under Regulation 7(1)(a) of the Drug and Cosmetics Regulation 1984, which provides for a maximum fine of RM25,000 or up to three years’ jail, or both, under Section 12(1) of the Sale of Drug Act 1952 (Amended 2000).”
