LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A federal grand jury on Friday indicted a Los Angeles man on charges of trafficking in counterfeit tablets of the anti-impotence drug Viagra that he purportedly obtained from a drug company in China, a U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman said.

The three-count indictment names Chris Do, also known as Khoa Twan Do, and accuses the Glendale, California, man of conspiring with a Beijing drug maker to import at least 40,000 bogus Viagra tablets.

Do, 31, had the tablets shipped to his business, Health Plus in Glendale, but two packages were intercepted by U.S. customs officials in Alaska, Assistant U.S. Attorney John Owens said.

Agents seized about 10,000 blue pills stamped with the same markings as Viagra tablets, including the name of Pfizer Inc., the world's largest pharmaceutical company and the maker of Viagra.

Viagra is one of Pfizer's top-selling drugs, with a U.S. market share of 85 percent of new prescriptions for anti-impotence drugs as of mid-October, the company reported in its quarterly earnings report.

Prosecutors said Do planned to take advantage of demand for the world's most recognized brand of anti-impotence drug, which Pfizer reports has been prescribed to more than 20 million men worldwide since its launch in 1998.

A search of Do's computer revealed that he had arranged for at least 40,000 fake Viagra pills to be shipped to him, and that he had instructed the manufacturer to make them "look like the real thing," the indictment said.

The tablets contained some measure of the active ingredient in Viagra, but the pills had not passed muster with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites), Owens said.

A representative of Pfizer could not be immediately reached for comment.

The charges of conspiracy, trafficking in counterfeit goods and selling a counterfeit drug carry a potential maximum penalty of up to 18 years in federal prison and a $2 million fine.

Do is scheduled to be arraigned in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Jan. 26.
