We are looking pretty seriously at a dress for Marjorie that is listed on Dance Again. The dress is located in Australia, and the owner said she'd deliver it to NANs in July if someone could collect it there. Is there a DM family who is driving and who would be willing to do this? It would be paid for, so no money would change hands. If it seems like too much trouble, that's OK-- I completely understand and would have it shipped here instead. We still don't have a deal yet, I am just considering the options. Thanks!

Had a great time though-- the rain held off, and we set up two tents in the center of the field where we hung out together and waited . . . . .

As many of you know, my dad had a complication after his unexpected bypass surgery. He has been back to Lahey for 2 weeks now with the past week in the Critical Care Unit (step down from ICU, step up from the main floor which he spent his first week on)... I have spent most of my time in there and have had to do quite a bit of advocating for him as his situation is far from cut and dry...

My sister is in charge of email updates on his status every few days so let me know if you would like me to add you to that list.

I emailed many DMers early on but it was a large group email (so many dear friends at DM, past and present) so some didn't get it depending on their email set up (spam blockers and the like). I appreciate every positive thought and prayer out there and ask you to send some positive energy my Dad's way... He is 82 but his heart (repaired), lungs and kidneys are all fine. He was on the golf course/tennis court/bowling lane all w/in one week of his surgery. His sodium levels have had him out of wack this entire time (hyponatremia - incredibly complicated) and they have just started him on a newer, but somewhat risky, medication AND he just developed a fever - signifying an infection developed in the last couple of days.

I haven't even been able to get the kids to school some days, let alone all of their extra-c activities. I've been in touch w/Chris and told her we will try to get back the week of June 4th... Now, I just saw that is the last week for my adult ceili class... I know Chris is going through a similarly tough time with her mother-in-law and certainly send our thoughts and prayers to Mrs. Murphy as well as my dad...

If anyone could share here if that is the last week of all classes as well, that would be helpful. Any general information on how summer classes will go would be great, too.

Hey Heidi, missing you, too, DM teacher, mom and friend and of course all the GALS at ceili class - gosh, I could use a good workout (meaning emotional w/lots of laughs) right now!

Well, with all the folks attending the recital and the dinner dance, I've had some questions about the upcoming beginner class. Others may be wondering, too, and I didn't want to get the details wrong - Saturdays starting in April, time?

Is that class appropriate for age 4 or should 4 year-olds wait for a summer intro workshop and a fall Wee Pat class?

Also, Alli danced at her old pre-school last week and the teacher offered to put a flyer in each kid's cubbie so if you email the flyer to me, Heidi, I can get those to "Miss Julie" who runs Small Wonders Preschool (in Ipswich - a wonderful preschool by the way - Miss Julie is an angel).

The DM Booster Group will be selling snacks, baked items and water this Saturday at the recital. All proceeds will support our scholarship fund for graduating seniors. We welcome anyone who would like to contribute to the table or help out selling either prior to or after the show or during intermission. If you plan on providing a snack, please email me what you would like to bring. We're specifically looking for either individual prepackaged snacks or baked items that are individually wrapped for easy sale. Cookies or brownies work best. We could also use bottled water. Please drop off snacks/baked items either at the dance studio this Friday at 7 p.m. or by 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Ipswich Performing Arts Center. If you are interested in volunteering to help sell during one of the shifts, please email me at malberigi@yahoo.com.

If the parents in each class could please determine who can help with this important role and fill in the Class Mom’s info on the sign-up sheet at the studio, that would be a big help. This applies to dancers through the advanced beginner level. Novice and above will be in the back dressing room.

We need responsible parents to “chaperone” the children at their seats, including bathroom runs, if necessary. Class Moms must attend their dancer’s portion of the dress rehearsa. In classes with many, very young children, two moms can sign up and plan to both share the chaperone role.

Dancers will sit with their classes throughout the show, including after they have completed their own number. Younger dancers leaving at the intermission will need to be signed out by their parent with the Class Mom in the dancer area prior to the beginning of the second half of the show.

Hi DM Parents,

This is a reminder that ticket stubs and dollars are due by this Thursday at the end of class.

Your help is needed (and appreciated) so that our Calendar Fundraiser will be a success! We ask that each dancer sell at least five calendars, if possible. More calendars are still available, in an envelope on the Booster Bulletin Board, for those able to sell more than their five...

The drawings will begin this Thursday night after classes have ended for the day (March already!) and winners will be posted each day throughout the lucky month of March.

It is very important that we support this fundraiser. Think of a friend or relative who enjoys buying scratch tickets and the like ~ Let them know they can check our message board (voy.com/15725/) each and every day in March to see if they are a winner (what fun!). Winner's stubs will be put right back in the hat so there is a chance of winning more than once by buying just one $10 calendar.

If you haven't sold your 5 calendars yet, please try to do so. Thank You!

If you have sold them, please bring in the stubs and the money. THANK YOU!

If you've already sold and turned in your calendar stubs and money ~ THANK YOU!

If you have sold calendars that you are not able to get in to the studio by Thursday, please contact Mary via email at mmdoyle5@verizon.net and perhaps she can fill out and enter stubs into the hat for you and make arrangements to collect the money from you.

As described in the calendar packet cover letter, the booster group funds not only the scholarships, but also the year-end party (a great celebration for all DM families), year-end gift that benefits the studio (and therefore the dancers!), as well as providing opportunities to share camaraderie and information at our dress sales, open house, feis information days. We have also donated funds to defray Bracken Workshop costs. The workshops are very important to the entire school in that, not only is intense instruction for the advanced competitive, but DM also gets several new steps, both for heavy and light shoes, from Thomas as part of the arrangement. While fundraising isn't the funnest part of being a booster, it is necessary for us to continue to support the DM dancers (and their parents) at every level.

On behalf of the dancers, Thank you!

The monthly meeting for Booster members is this week (second Wednesday of the month!).

Membership closed for the year at 39 members - our biggest membership year ever! Thanks to all for joining and particularly for your active support of the dancers, of Chris and Heidi and the Duffin-Murphy School of Irish Dance - in particular the upcoming recital and St. Patrick's Day Traditional Dinner Dance, and of one another as we work together to raise funds for scholarships and for school-wide, Booster-sponsored events like the Fall Open House and Dress Sale and the End of Year PARTY!

Note the time change to 6:30-7:30 which overlaps the two classes so that some members (and their dancers) have to come early and some stay a bit beyond their class time. And, to those who make it to the meeting even though your dancer doesn't have class, a special thanks!

It's Valentine's Day - So put on something red (not my color!), give your significant other a kiss and a hug goodbye, and bring a special valentine to share ~ a treat, a poem or surprise us!

Valentine's Day at DM ~ Where else would you want to be???!!!

The Monthly Booster Meeting is this Wednesday night, January 10th, from 5:30-6:30.

Because there is never a perfect time to meet, we particularly appreciate the efforts by those who make it to the meeting even though their dancers don't have class on Wednesdays. Thanks, too, to those who are able to (when possible) arrive earlier than their dancer's class time to catch the whole meeting and those who stay later than their dancer's class for the meeting. If you are able to plan ahead and have your dancer bring portable homework, thanks to them to!

This month's meeting will follow a standard agenda including updates on plans for the upcoming Calendar Fund-raiser and the March 10th Recital Volunteer Opportunities (Dress Rehearsal March 7th).

Also, as our ice breaker (this cuz we are such an uptight group - hahaha), you are invited to bring a copy of your family's holiday picture (or a somewhat current shot of them if you didn't get around to taking the family pic - imagine!!!). We will post them on the the school bulletin board. Sometimes we are surprised to see that non-dancing siblings do indeed exist!

All are welcome - new membership forms are on the bulletin board with a payment envelope if you haven't had a chance to sign up as a Booster this year but would like to. Memberships for 2006/2007 will close at the end of the month. Membership does have its privileges in appreciation for efforts expended by the group throughout the year. If you want to get involved and haven't signed up for 2006/2007 yet, now is the time! If you are unsure, post here (remember no full names for safety sake on the message board) and Kay can check and let you know whether she has you on the official roster.

Thanks and Hope to See You Wednesday!

At techique last week there were only four of us so we thought that it would be too hard to pick names for secret santa...So we thought of a Yankee Swap to do at the end of class... Here are the details
- if you wish to participate please bring a gift with you to the Tuesday night class
- a small gift should be fine...not too much money. Five to ten dollars should be good
- bring something not too girly as we have Aidan and I'm sure that he would not like anything pink and frilly.

Open to any other Ideas, suggestions, or comments if anyone would like to share. Hope everyone has a good week and see you at class.

Emily and Erika V are going to put together this year's O collage. All of those O attendees who took pix, please help out by bringing photos for possible inclusion into the studio.

Bring any photos you would like to the studio - there will be a drop off envelope on the cork photo bulletin board. There are bound to be duplicate shots but don't let that stop you from submitting all possible pix. Write your last name or initials on the back of each photo so that extras can be returned to you.

Emily and Erika will need a variety of shots to truly reflect the crazy weekend including:

Pix from the Dress Rehearsal

Group Shots
(In Costume & In Team Clothing & Just Hanging Out)

Award Ceremonies & Winners w/Trophy Shots (w/Chris, w/friends, w/parents)

Pix including Parents and Siblings

Team Shots - posed and casual, in costume and not

If all photos could be brought to the studio before Christmas break, then they can work on it over vacation (important since Em is a high school junior - busy, busy!).

That should cover it - any questions, post here by clicking on the reply to this message.

A list of heartfelt congrats and thanks wouldn't be complete without mentioning our teachers:

Chris, your calm but direct way with the dancers and their moms kept everyone on firm ground (thanks MISS Chris!). Likewise, your words of wisdom to the entire DM team before the O helped to keep things in perspective in terms of personal goals, the pride one should take in the work put into practicing for months, the right each dancer earned to hold their head high on stage and dance their best and the dancers ultimately being stronger and better for all their efforts as they face their next ID goals.

Heidi, from helping Chris with everything, taking charge of the team clothes (lots of compliments on everything from the baseball shirts to the warmup suits to the comfy flannels!)to being an O mom yourself AND teacher to the most unruly bunch of DM dancers - that's right the adult teams, you deserve a big congrats and thank you for a job well done (and perhaps a medal from the adult dancers for surviving our wild ride!).

Katie, You were a teenager competing at the O's for so many years and now you are quite the young lady and teacher. I know all the dancers benefitted from the help you gave to Chris at team practices, running tech class and in your privates where you gave 110% to dancers who respect and admire you and work hard for you and because of you! As I told your mom, I am very proud of you! (But, gosh, you are making me feel like an old lady!)

Job Well Done, Ladies!

While success in terms of awards escaped us this year, I hope and believe that all ceili team participants experienced the meaning of team in a way that is not possible in individual competition. From the hours and hours of practice and preparation the dancers put in, to the running of pins and the running to dance individual comps in other rooms to the Team Moms who managed to get make-up and sock lengths just so, my hat is off to all of you!

As a team dancer myself (using the term VERY loosely here!), I know I felt great pride in representing DM both on and off the stage... Okay, the on stage part is a blur right now but the rest of the experience is clear as a bell!

In spite of the famous team related sayings like "Together Each Achieves More" and "There's no 'I' in team", I really do want to just give a very special and extremely meaningful cyber-hug to COLLEEN and acknowledge her dancing with her team in spite of her broken foot. Colleen is a proven champion in our school on so many levels and I just think her selflessness in dancing through the pain and delaying her recuperation is absolutely incredible at any age, any time, any place. With all the cliches about teens being self-oriented and caught up in their own worlds at times, Colleen's participation at the O is a sign of great character and determination - qualities that will serve her well throughout life! Bravo, Colleen!

The blush comes with a tiny brush so if you want to bring a larger brush of your own to add to the bag, that would probably work best for easy application.

I hope all who were able to attend got something out of last night's "meeting" if only a good laugh... Actually, I think some good information was shared by those in attendance. There were 10 of us there, but with 35 DM dancers competing this year (I think that is a school record!), many couldn't make it. So...

Rather than swapping emails and adding to that ever-growing INBOX, I thought it would make more sense to share any tips and suggestions as well as questions and concerns here on our message board. That way, rather than checking a bunch of emails, you can just check the board when you are in O-prep mode...

Feel free to add your 2 cents (or more!) by typing your suggestion or question right into the message/subject line.

I found a pair of lights on the floor Wed. night. I put them on the wall at the studio if someone is missing them.

Margo and I will be at the studio from 1-3 pm for open studio on Friday. It would be great if another parent (or parents) could be there for the 5-8 slot.

Hey everyone,
I'll be around Saturday afternoon after Trad. Set practice if anyone wants privates. I know some of you are getting very anxious, especially if it's your first Oireachtas! Just send me an email at mkk2@unh.edu if you would like one.

Just a reminder that this Wednesday is indeed the second Wed of November - incredible, I know! Anyway, our regular monthly meeting will be from 5:30-6:30. Hope to see many DM parents there. If you haven't officially paid dues for the year, no problem. Come on down and we always have membership forms and a payment envelope posted at the studio!

It's that time of year, time for the Oireachtas – “The O-what???” you ask???? Here’s a primer on the Oireachtas for DM dancers and families so that all can understand, support and feel a part of this special competitive event… (click here and read on...)

Congratulations to the three DM dancers who made the trip to Lenihan today--Maddie, Marjorie, and Ceili. All three came home with trophies! It was a long day trip, but well worth it. This is probably the best-run feis we have ever been to.

There is a growing pile of items on the 2 top black shelves near the door to the studio... I recall spotting several headbands, water bottles, a pair of jeans w/a t-shirt and socks, sweatjackets and sweatshirts big and small (including 2 with Newburyport logos on them).

So, please check the LOST AND FOUND before it becomes the LOST FOREVER and DONATED - which we will do in December!

Just a reminder that we are trying to get all the owned DM dresses that are for sale safely back to their current "homes". Heidi has fashioned a nice one page form that may be left in the DRESS SALE BINDER at the studio to advertise your dress for sale. There are spaces for lots of measurements and the more precise information you provide, the better the likelihood of a sale.

So, if your dd's dress is still at the studio, please take it home at your earliest convenience and do fill out a form - there are blanks in the binder! Any questions, email me or post here! Thanks for your cooperation.

Since most or all dancers have off from school this Friday, November 10th, Chris has scheduled an extra ceili practice for that morning (you've probably gotten the email). Then we will have "open studio" from about noon to 2:00 pm for those who want to stay and practice their TS or solo. I will be there-- but it would be great to have another mom or two there as well, even for part of the time. Thanks!

I am wondering if there is any trick to fraying the shawls. I am fraying a sample for the adult ceili teams and only one side is going easily. Any ideas? Thanks!

Also, by the way, I heard the beginner dancers looked adorable and had a great time dancing at the feis this past weekend. We'd love to see pix - feel free to post them on the photo bulletin board at the studio.
