Hey Everybody, There is a booster group meeting on Tuesday at 6:45 at the studio... We are sticking with the same day/time for the remainder of the year in order to minimize confusion... Chris is planning to have open studio on Tuesday nights ($3 for 1 child, $5 for family rate) so bring your dancer(s) if they want to get some dance time in while we conduct our meeting (what would a meeting be without my voice being drowned out by hardshoe at some point).

At the meeting, we will conduct regular monthly updates, share Chris' info from her meetings with classes and, for the majority of the time, focus on the Recital, tying up loose ends and making some money decisions to be voted on by booster group members. As always, all DM parents are welcome to attend.

Any questions, post here, or better yet, come to the meeting (I'm a bit tied up with an Understanding Learning Disabilities program I am running this week at our grammar school - for the last time before I hand it over to a new victim, I mean, volunteer... The end is in sight and my garden is beckoning...) Hope everyone is well (I feel so out of touch!) and hope to see many of you at the meeting.

I got this via email and Marie wanted it to be shared...

" I want all of you to know that the recital yesterday afternoon was more than magnificient.

The first opening number was jaw dropping for it's beauty. I was trying to decide if the dancers looked liked tulips in the glade or fairies in the glen.

It was actually the only receital that I wanted to stay until the end.

The adult class was inspiring.....I was thinking about joining last year when it was offered, but I was and still am too over booked to have any energy left over for fun for myself....But, I am whittling it down little by little and maybe by Septemeber, I'll be ready.

Again.....you were all splendiferous. And even that word doesn't convey just how teriffic you all were."

I'm so glad everyone enjoyed The Show and that it was a success from all perspectives, both backstage and in the auditorium... I could go on, but I won't (right now)... Can't wait to see the dvd, Nancy

A quick CONGRATULATIONS! to all Duffin-Murphy dancers, parents, and Booster Group. It was a great day and so refreshing to see the school evolve. The beginners were in absolute awe with the dresses and the more advanced dancers. It allowed them and their family an opportunity to see what they can strive for. Thank you to all who coordinated this very special event. The hard work certainly paid off by seeing the smiles on the faces! Sleep well tonight and I will see you in dance class!

Beginners: Arrive by 2:15 pm, fully ready with costume on, hair (sides and front secured on top of head with a black hair elastic, remaining hair down, uncurled) and make-up done (blush and clear or lightly tinted lip gloss), brand new poodle socks and polished soft shoes on (we will provide sock glue at the recital). Beginner dancers will report directly to their designated row of seats in the auditorium. We have several chaperones.

Advanced Beginners: Arrive by 2:15 pm, fully ready with costume on EXCEPT for shawls (Thurs. class) and shawls and belts (Tues. class) (which should be pressed and in hand). These will be put on backstage so they do not get wrinkled or disheveled while dancers wait in their auditorium seats. All advanced beginner dancers should have hair curled for the recital. Parents may collectively decide whether or not to curl for the dress rehearsal, keeping in mind that is when the class picture will be taken. Curlers should be removed prior to arrival. There is a curling handout at the studio. If you have curling questions, please post them on the message board as we have years and years of collective curling experience.

Noncompetitive Dancers: Arrive by 2:00 pm, fully dressed with costumes on for ceili dancing and all hair and base make-up done only so that consistent eye, lip and blush color can be applied. Traditional set noncompetitive dancers should first report to the backstage dressing room area to leave their D-M dresses there for the dress change for traditional set.

Adult Dancers: We had said to arrive by 2:00 pm, but 1:45 would be better if possible!!! It is your personal choice as to whether you would like to arrive in your ceili dresses or change at the school. CHRIS WOULD LIKE TO DO A RUN THROUGH IN THE GYM... FIND NANCY AS YOU ARRIVE AND WE CAN DO IT AS SOON AS WE ARE ALL TOGETHER.

Novice Dancers: Arrive by 2:00 pm, dressed in clothing as you would arrive at a feis, with wigs on and makeup done. Report to backstage dressing room area designated for novice dancers and get dressed in DM school dress. Novice dancers will be handing out the programs as guests arrive, stand for the anthems and watch the Siamsa number from the auditorium and then report backstage for their recital number. After dancing, novice dancers will return to the dressing area, change out of dresses and sit in their designated row in the auditorium for the remainder of the show.

Prizewinner & Preliminary Championship Dancers: Arrive by 2:00 pm in Siamsa outfits, with hair up and with base makeup done only so that consistent blush, eye and lipstick color can be applied. Dancers who need help with wigs should let us know in advance so that sufficient helping hands (of the adult ceili dancers) will be at the ready.

SIAMSA DANCERS WILL BE DOING A RUN THROUGH AS SOON AS ALL HAVE ARRIVED SO BE THERE READY TO GO BY 2~!

Nationals Dancers: Arrive by 2:00 pm with wigs on. Bring all items needed backstage to designated dressing room.

FYI, there is parking out back - if dancer families could park there - there is a back door to go in through so it shouldn't be a big deal - that would leave more upfront parking for guests...

I'll bring poster board if someone could volunteer to post some signs (get out the duct tape!).

Date Posted: 04/23/06 8:59am

Just thinking of a couple of things...Novice and up Moms, please have your dancers read this, too!

Thank you Maddie V for sharing your safety pins! Does anyone already have a bunch of bobby pins that we can also put in a shared place OR if anyone could pick up a pack, that would be great... My feis bag is not up to par these days and the girls and I were scrambling for bobby pins (thanks Erin for helping us out yesterday)...

Remember to use that seat as your home space(like your locker, remember?). Keep things under and on the chair as much as possible... That way, the dress change will run more smoothly and no one will suddenly not know where a shoe is, etc...

Also, I know yesterday was a long day and there will be less time to spend in the dressing room BUT could everyone please try hard to take care of their trash, etc. And we don't want anyone stuck picking up after others at the end - so dancers should clean up their own messes (even left over bobby pins) ;).

Polish those shoes (heavies and lights) early this am if you haven't done so already...

Marianne is going to post the line-up in a few places and her backstage crew (aka Lori, Linda and Margot!) will try to mark off as the show goes along... Perhaps a dancer from each group should be assigned to knowing when to have their group ready and in the holding room... (the chorus room right next to the band room...much closer to back stage). The Nationals dancers will have to do this too as they will not be watching the show in the auditorium today. (Sorry Nationals Dancers, I hope you enjoyed watching the run through!)

There are two single bathrooms with keys right behind backstage - dancers can use those if necessary... leave the wooden key thing in the door and I believe you can lock it from inside manually (and an occupado sign comes up, just like on a portapotty!). That said, bathroom runs should all be done as much as possible before the show.

And, dress changes should be done in the dressing room (band room) not those bathrooms (as much as possible, major modesty issue or need for a "bathroom run", that's fine). Thank you dancers for using the band closets to change out of your tights, etc... The dressing room (band room) will be females only during the show.

Parker and Aidan, please wait in the holding room (chorus room) while the dancers change from Siamsa to Treble Reel outfits...

All Treble Reel Dancers - I know you always love to get those dresses right off BUT please hold off and go to the lobby and see your families (many have traveled far to see you) and let them take some pix with you in your full outfit (yes, even you teenagers, no eye-rolling please). This is the polite way to acknowledge their support of you as a dancer...

Also, I hate to be a pain but (hey, it's my job)we really need to get a full group shot after that and before you get out of those dresses... Back on stage like 10 minutes after the show ends and most of the crowd leaves, that way we could get that team picture with Chris -- We need it for the scrapbook to culminate 10 years (I even have a spot waiting for it)!!!!!!

Did I leave anything out? Joanne, are you still reading? Post here if there are any other details to help today run as smoothly as realistically possible... You have all been awesome... Now, let's do it!!!

Hi, I did get some restaurant questions... Personally, my folks are taking us all out to dinner but said "no" to the Sidney and Hampton and Hart House :( ...

Here are some ideas... Call info for telno, street address for mapblasting... Some take reservations, especially for larger parties... 5pm rese's should be do-able...

Rowley

Sidney and Hampton Restaurant – fancy, $$$$ but worth it – very special(5 minutes from the IPAC)

American Barbecue – yummy barbecue, relaxed atmosphere
(less than 10 minutes from the IPAC)

Spud’s – it’s edible… family friendly, kid’s meals, pretty basic (less than 10 minutes from the IPAC)

Ipswich

Marco Polo – Italian/American fare, new, not sure how it is (across the street from the IPAC)

1640 Hart House – very nice, $$$ (2 minutes from the IPAC)

The ClamBox – some indoor seating, famous clam shack
(2 minutes North of the IPAC)

Majestic Dragon – basic Chinese food, family friendly
(less than 10 minutes from the IPAC

Essex (about 10 minutes down 133 south of Ipswich)

The Village – nice, excellent seafood

Woodman’s Famous Seafood in the Rough – famous, but $$

Lewis’ – less expensive, basic fare

Fortune Palace (I think that’s the name ) – decent Chinese food

Periwinkle’s – seafood, on the harbor, not sure how it is

Tom Shea’s – seafood, on the harbor, not sure how it is

And, of course, there is Newburyport with tons of restaurants there - could be a good stop for those traveling back north to Maine and NH

Since the Siamsa dancers are due at 11am for as long as Chris needs them and then their dress rehearsal slot is on stage at 2:40, there will be a break during which Siamsa dancers can eat lunch. Bring your own lunch can be eaten out on picnic tables outside the cafeteria (weather permitting)... In the band room which will be serving as a dressing room, there is no soda or juice boxes allowed, water only as far as beverages and non-messy snacks... There is a back parking lot off of the band room area that is only used by lunch staff during the week so, weather permitting, the kids can go get some fresh air and stretch their legs...

There is a pizza place right next door and Courtney and the older dancers can go pick up pizzas (and soda) and bring them back. If your dancer would like to participate, bring $3.

I should know for sure by 5 p.m. tomorrow. If there is someone in particular I should call - let me know. Otherwise- I will just post a message and hopefully see you on Saturday.

Assuming she will be okay - should I curl her hair for the dress rehearsal?

Quick Message Board update - I'll email everyone directly later today...

We were fortunate to secure the venue for practice on the real stage... Bring dancesneakers along with your heavies and lights as they will have just rolled out the Marley flooring and we may need to work some wrinkles out...

We'll be sure to run through the TREBLE REEL too so Open dancers can feel free to come, too...

We'll set a start time of 6pm -- if you can't make it until 6:30, that's okay, we'll be able to scope the place out and get started...Hopefully, we can wrap it up by 8:30.

Let us know if you CAN'T make it.

Directions: Route 95 to Exit 54/Route 133 East toward Rowley. Follow Route 133 for several miles (through the Agawam Diner intersection) - Bear right at the stop sign and merge with Route 1A... The IPAC is about 3 miles down on your right.... (Folks coming from Route 1 South, from Nport, you take a LEFT at the Agawam Diner intersection - not a right as formerly stated).

To All DM Families ~

We are coming into the home stretch...Some last details...

Tickets Glitch -- Just in case, if everyone could check and make sure they don't have tickets marked LEFT Rows A-J. These seats are reserved for the dancers and the chaperone Recital Moms. Contact Karol-Anne O or post here if you do have seats in this section and she will reissue other seats to you.

Directions Glitch -- On the first update, I mistakenly said to take a right on 1S to 133 East and it is a left... The correct directions are on this board. The street address is 130 High Street Ipswich if you would like to Mapblast (my directions do give landmarks!).

Name Spelling -- Every attempt has been made to get all dancers' names spelled correctly on the program. If your dancer has an unusual name spelling or you think it has been printed incorrectly in the past, reply to this email with the proper spelling. Advanced apologies for any errors that may occur on the program as we try our best to get it 100% accurate!

Costumes -- All dancers should have costumes in hand at this point in time. All poodle socks should be purchased at this point - remember brand new and preferably mid-calf. We will have extra sock glue at the venue.

All dancers in numbers with leotards and tights should try their ensemble on in advance to work out any "undergarment issues" - just to be sure all dancers are comfortable.

Note to Thursday Advanced Beginnner - 4pm class - If your dancer is in this class and you do not have a purple headband in hand, please post this on the message board (and include your email address in the field for email address). Also, all dancers in this class should have black bloomers. They can be purchased at the stage or any dance store. If you are having trouble getting black bloomers, please post here and some DM families can likely help out with sharing a gently used pair!

If anyone has an extra purple headband (the original type), please post that fact and contact information here. I believe we were coming up just 2 or 3 short, so it would be nice to secure them for the dancers. All such borrowing would be arranged directly between the borrower and the lender so you will get those treasured keepsakes back!

Area Restaurants -- There are many wonderful area restaurants from casual to elegant. I will be not be emailing a list to everyone but I will be posting them here. Check back if you are interested in suggestions for taking dancer and family out for a well-deserved celebratory dinner.

Make-Up, DVD purchase, Arrival Times for Rehearsal and Recital (by class) -- All of these details were detailed in last week's Final Recital Update (a copy exists further down on this message board). If you have any questions, send an email to me or post here.

I would just like to thank you for all of the extra time you have put in to make this Siamsa routine work. You all worked together as a team, regardless of the level, and it is a true test of your character at such a young age. Your parents must be so very proud of each of you as I know I am!!!! I have passed your hard work efforts, blood, sweat, and tears stories on to Chris. Since I have not had the privelige to teach you directly, I wanted you to know you are all beautiful dancers in your own right. A big thank you to the Open Girls and Dance moms for pitching in while those were not here! I truly appreciate it.

No time right now to email all the ladies in the adult class, but I know some were talking about the possibility of practicing at the studio... Would need tall enough dancers to sub in for those not able to make it so we can get that circle looking more like a circle... How is Monday night for everyone who is in town. Reply here or email me or someone could email all the adults in class - I'll try to get to that by tomorrow night but not sure I'll have time. Ellen and Kara, your dresses are at the studio.

Please check your tickets
in case of error:

Some of the people selling tickets during classes last week (I admit it - It was me!!!) may have inadvertently sold tickets that were from the area where the dancers are sitting.

If anyone that is not a chaperone has tickets from rows A through J on the left side, could you please notify Karol-Anne as soon as possible so that she can exchange your tickets with different seats.

No matter when you bought them, please check your tickets just in case. We would like to prevent any fist-to-cuffs over seats the day of the recital!

I first just want to say how amazing our pw and prelim dancers are who have been showing up literally night after night to finish this important number for the recital... They have stayed long hours and have kept a positive attitude throughout. You mom and dad drivers are pretty darn special yourselves... And, as far as the parent volunteers, well, you guys are the bomb! And, Heidi, you've been so great with the kids (and the adults - a very calming influence - how do you do it??!!)

Okay, everyone all buttered up and smiling...

SIAMSA PRACTICE, FRIDAY NIGHT, APRIL 14 from 7-9

(Please make every effort to be there... Even if you know the steps, there is lots of polishing to do. We also have had some absences for various reasons so everyone needs to be there for the "good of the team". That said, those with family or personal obligations are certainly excused. Do let us know if you can't make it.)

No practice Saturday

No practice Sunday

No practice Monday

No practice Tuesday

(wow, so much time off? what will you all do?)

Practice Wednesday night (time TBD @ the Ipswich Performing Arts Center - 15 minute drive south of the studio)

All joking aside, thanks again to everyone for working so hard toward the recital... the countdown begins...

BUT, I just opened the package (from Walmart - where the buttons are) and there is, in fact, black elastice attached already. It comes in gold and silver. I got gold as most gaelic broaches are gold.

P.S. If any adult ceili dancers need to borrow a broach, please post here!

The following are Siamsa practices:
Wednesday 6:30-8:30 (Pre-lim)
Wednesday 5:30-8:30pm (Prizewinner)

Thursday 5-7 (both Prizewinner & Pre-lim)

It is imperative that you attend. It is challenging finishing a routine when there are missing bodies. Because it is a team routine (boy/girl), confusion sets in seeing we are all girls w/ some playing the part of the boy. We have had moms hop in and Parker and Aidan (thank you), however, they will not be there the day of the recital to perform-not sure if they will fit in the skirts. I understand we all have other commitments but it would be great if we could have everyone present. Just think, the recital will be behind us before we know it! I truly appreciate your attendance!

I have received a lot of questions regarding ticket sales. Friday night will be booster members only. (Good incentive to join next year!) Saturday will be only the 5 allotted for each dancer. Noone will be allowed to purchase more than the 5 at this time. I will be checking names off the master list of dancers so I can see who has purchased their tickets. In the event that everyone has purchased their 5 tickets, we will open up sales for the extra tickets. If everyone has not, noone wil be able to buy more than their 5 on Saturday, you will have to wait until Sunday. On Sunday we will start selling tickets to those who wish to purchase additional tickets beyond their alloted 5. There should be some tickets available on Sunday. If you cannot be there on Saturday or get a friend to buy them for you on Saturday, be there right at 1:00 on Sunday or contact me and I can hold them for you until 2:45 on Sunday. I have had many requests for additional tickets and we would like to sell out, so don't wait!

Thank you to the Dymek family for opening up their home and planning such a wonderful suprise party. It was so great to see everyone in a setting other than the studio or a feis. Addison came home last night on cloud. I know she will treasure that bracelet forever. We love all of you and thank you for your friendship. You have enriched our lives beyond measure. Addison will do her best to make you proud.

Planning to post on the bulletin board at the studio as well...

If you HAVE any of the following HAVE NOT items, please let us know/bring them in. If planning to loan items, mark with masking tape with your name and we will provide a method for you to keep track of who borrows items to help facilitate their return (some type of a sign out list).

HAVE NOTS

We need a total of 8 purple, old-style headbands for the adv beg thurs class.

We need a total of 6 green, old-style headbands for the adv beg tues class.

We need a advanced beginner purple dress (belt with embroidery, crochet/lace collar, no embroidery on the skirt), approx size 10, for a dancer in the thurs adv beg class. Let us know if you have one versus just bringing it in so we don't lose track of it...

Dancers in tuesday and thursday advanced beginner classes will need black bloomers... various sizes. They can be purchased at dance stores but if anyone has gently used bloomers to sell/share, please consider doing so.

Duffin-Murphy will be holding a fundraiser at Papa Ginos in Newburyport on April 4, to benefit the Duffin-Murphy team heading to Nationals in San Diego. Look for flyers in the studio this week explaining the details. Papa Ginos will donate 20% of the total pre-tax sales from all the guests that come in with the flyer during the fundraiser.
This is valid for dine in and take out orders. It is also valid on any gift cards purchased during the evening as well. Come enjoy a delicious meal and support your fellow dancers. Grab flyers for your friends and families. Just come in Tuesday April4 ( the first day that there is no technique class) between the hours of 4:00 and 9:00 PM. YOU MUST PRESENT THE FLYER WHEN ORDERING. Hope to see you there!

I'm not sure exactly which dancers are scheduled to dance at Cameron's in Gloucester so thought I'd post info here. I spoke to a very nice lady (Leslie) at Cameron's and they will be organizing 3 tables of 8 all together for parents of dancers. She said we could use this as a home base throughout the night as we eat, drink and be merry - AND enjoy the band as well as the dancers. They will have boiled dinner (I'll pass!) as well as their regular menu. They also have pizza which I read is very good so we can buy some pizzas for the dancers to enjoy. Leslie recommended that we begin to arrive BY 6 as she expects a busy night. I did also let her know that we will have a group arriving later (from Michael's) that will be ready to join in as well.

There is a dressing 'area' up the stairs from the dance floor. Leslie's description sounded more like a hallway than a dressing area so I would suggest that some may choose to do wigs and make-up, glued socks, bloomers, in advance... The easier it is to slip dresses on the better. She did say their is a rack to hang dresses on so that is good.

If we would like to start the evening by ordering a few pizzas for the dancers at 6, they can eat at the "home base" tables while the parents enjoy a libation of their choice and then the first wave of parents can eat, then our later arrivals...

The guys at Stormy Winds have been very welcoming and helpful. The plan is that the dancing will begin at 8pm but they were quick to add that all we need to do is give them the high sign when the dancers are ready to go. They also would like to encourage the dancers to do some "informal" dancing as the night goes on, treble reels, hand clapping, hooting, howling and the like! Based on past Irish Nights, I would think that Chris would like to see the dancers in DM skorts or black pants with a DM tshirt (black and white or purple) or, if the dancers feel like leaving on their wigs, they could probably wear tank tops WITH their DM O Team Jackets on! No dancing in socks. Polished dance shoes for the show, of course, and dance shoes or dance sneakers for any post-show dancing.

There will be a 50/50 raffle to help with Nationals expenses that has been approved by the Cameron's owners. Karol-Anne, Corinne and Caron have generously agreed to help with it... Caron already has the tickets (she also has and will give tickets for Michael's to Mary, Marianne, and Linda)... Expect we'll need some baskets to aid in the ticket sales as the dancers will do their thing - selling in their dresses after dancing...

Please remind all dancers that the BUDDY SYSTEM is in effect for the entire evening and the younger dancers should be paired with older dancers. Unlike past Irish Nights when the dancers were in the crowd selling tickets, this is an event open to the public. The band is schedule to perform 6-10, if I remember correctly. We'll keep an eye to make sure the surroundings are family friendly and plan to finish up our evening as common sense dictates relative to the children.

Please post anything I didn't cover here. Thanks and Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

To all Moms!

I am putting together a black leotard order for the Siamsa routine and my 6 o'clock Ceili class. That being said, if you could get with Nancy/Sally with size before Thursday, that would be great. Also, I am willing to purchase the tights, as well. They are on the www.justforkix.com website. If you go on the site for sizes and let me know for both, I would greatly appreciate it. The cost is significantly less than at a dance supply store.

As we work toward outfitting the different classes for the recital, a request for help:

1. We would like to gather 8 of the old purple headbands for sale or to borrow - we will affix names on underside with masking tape. There is just one class wearing them so getting them back should be do-able - especially with the help of that class's Costume Mom - Arleen - thanks, Arleen!

2. We would like to gather up the black skirts formerly used in many a Riverdance-style number at past recitals and Irish Nights. We started with 15-20 and now just have ONE! We'll be like the library and offer clemancy - return the skirts and no questions will be asked - lol!

3. Regarding the class wearing the original beginner purple dresses: The moms in that class would like to know what tips "experienced" moms have for cleaning the gold capes.

Any input would be great in answer to the cape question or with regard to the needed items. Thanks!

If there is anyone interested in heading up a committee to hold a yard sale on a Sunday in May or early June, speak now or forever...

Chris is willing to ask her landlord about possible use of the lower lot. No guarantee the landlord would agree to it but the entire place is pretty much vacant on Sundays. Also, if someone wanted to use their own yard, that would be great.

If noone is able to head this up, then we will not pursue it further and folks can make other plans for their yard sale-potential items.

Also regarding nationals fundraising, fyi, Karol-Anne is looking into some options and will let us know what she comes up with.
