Hi there, Can I add a personal (as opposed to a councillor) response to this as well. Angela, you speak quite colourfully about dogs being allowed to "socialise with each other" and being walked "off the lead".

I have misgivings about dogs being off their leads in areas where they may have close contact with children. If a child provoked a dog and the dog responded by attacking the child then the popular media would scream for the dog to be put down. If a dog is on a lead (no matter how long a lead) then then owner would be able to rein it back in and avoid any serious confrontation.

Also, if a big dog tried to "bully" a small dog then I would expect the owner to prevent any harm to the smaller dog. Again this would be easier if the dog is on a leash.

This is no criticism of dogs or owners but just a thought of a possible safety issue.

(Incidentally, Justin, if you are reading this, can you check with your colleagues at Southfields and tell us if Charnwood have any bye-laws about dogs & leads in public streets & parks. I know they have a fine - £80? - for dogs fouling).
