 There were none there when I passed. If it was cancelled at such short notice, then why was it cancelled? As I recall, the weather was actually ok on the day, it had just rained in the early morning.

If there's time to cancel, there's time to properly publicise it. If you don't take that approach, you will never get people out for events, especially from other villages, as they won't trust they'll be run.
