Two guided walks have been arranged in the early part of 2009...

(1) Sunday 3rd May: Meet at Stonehurst farm (2pm), Bond Lane, and look at the history of the village. This walk includes walking up some hills. (3 Miles).

(2) Tuesday 2nd June: Meet at Stonehurst farm (7pm) and go to near the Navigation Inn & return. (5 Miles).

Both walks will be hosted by Blue Guide leader Colin Crosby and cost £3 in advance or £4 on the day. You can contact Colin on Leic 2611576.

Both are graded as "Level 2" which decodes as "improver walks intended for people who have done a bit of walking or think they might want to try something longer. The should last 60-90 minutes, may include steeper gradients and some field walking. they will be held at a pace where people's health will benefit from the walk."

I have just heard from one of my members that the ATM at the Co-op on Rothley Road has had a cloning device on it during the last couple of weeks and has been out of order for a few days whilst it was removed.

The person concerned was contacted by their own bank who had been notified by the ATM provider.

If anyone has used that machine over this period they should check with their bank/building society to make sure that there hasn't been any unusual activity on their account.

If in doubt cancel the card and apply for a new one.

How come Mountsorrel Lane wasn't gritted on Thursday morning. The roundabout at the end of Walton Way and the hill up to Rothley were like an icerink, and we had to abandon our attempts to get to work. Not before I'd slipped an hit the kerb, which knackered the tracking on my car, though.

There was only about 2" of snow, and it should have been possible to get to Leicester with care. I checked the County Council website, and that road was definitely on their gritting route. In fact, I've not seen one gritting truck during this cold snap - are they an endangered or even extinct species?

I guess that this was because the County Council had let their salt and grit stocks run low, because there hadn't been significant snow for 18 years, and I suppose the bean-counters cut the budget because "on average" they needed less grit.

So - who do we send our bills to for lost working hours and my car tracking?

I read with interest the comments on the forum concerning the Budgens store in Mountsorrel. I have been using the store since it opened and never felt the need to complain about the staff, service or the produce. In fact I think the store is improving all the time. The introduction of lots of locally produced foods is excellent. I have always found the staff, although mostly young to be on the whole polite and helpful.
I called in to Tesco between Christmas and New Year and found that their stocks were also very low. In this time of economic struggles surely we need to support our local business' where ever possible.
I will certainly continue to support Budgens!

Is anyone as perpetually disappointed as I am when I 'pop' in to Budgens every night after work with no great expectations other than fresh veg, milk, bread and perhaps the odd ready cooked chicken? Maybe even someone on the checkout to take our hard earned money for their meagre offerings? But still we return in the hope that there may be the odd manager on the floor mopping up the failing freezers and helping the poor underpaid and undertrained staff? Sorry but patience has run out this christmas, when what we have been offered is well below normal expectations, and actually pitiful. Today 28th no bread milk and vegetables fit only for pigswill (or maybe not good enough?) We are fed up now Budgens. You have two or three exceptional members of staff who go way beyond expectations, the rest don't even talk to us, and it is the fault of you the management, and yours alone, and it is time it is brought to the attention of head office. You are failing all of us in the community, we expect a fair deal, and you are not delivering. I sincerely hope that you are made aware of my feelings and hopefully supported by others, and make a determined effort to address our concerns in the coming year. we wait and watch with interest.

Hi All,

I’m sure that some of you may have already heard what we are trying to do with the Mountsorrel Railway Project, for those of you that haven’t, I thought you might be interested in hearing what we have been doing and what the projects aims are.

Some of you will remember me posting a message to the board last year, in pursuit of historical information about the Mountsorrel Railway, for a book I was hoping to write on the subject. I pursued many channels and leads for information, which created quite a lot of local interest, not only in the book but the possibility of the railway being restored.

With the support of the Great Central Railway, late last year a project was formed with the intension of restoring the surviving section of the railway from it’s original junction with the GCR at Swithland Sidings, for a distance of around 1.8km to Bond Lane.

The projects aims are:

1) To allow local history recreations involving the local community and in particular local schools.
2) To restore three wooden open wagons into the early 20th century livery of the “Mountsorrel Granite Company”.
3) To allow historical industrial railway recreations to be performed. The GCR will be the only heritage railway in the UK that can show a double track mainline with an industrial railway branch line.
4) To allow the GCR to run passenger trains over the rebuilt railway, to a halt at Bond Lane where it will be possible to have an interface with Stonehurst Farm via their tractor trailer rides. The branch line will provide a very different railway journey to the current GCR experience.
5) To form a separate volunteer ecology group with the aim of developing and implementing ideas to encourage historically correct wildlife to the areas around the trackbed. We want to recreate the flora, fauna, insect, bird and animal life native to the area as it would have been during the original operating life of the railway.

So, as you can see, we have taken on quite a challenge!

Never the less, progress over the last year has been nothing short of staggering! The trackbed has been cleared over it’s entire length and is currently being prepared to receive ballast so that track laying can start early in the new year.

We now have over 40 volunteers of varying ages involved with the project. Most live locally, in fact we have 8 Mountsorrel volunteers under the age of 16. Our oldest volunteer is 77!

Our volunteers consist of those with an interest in local history, ecology, heritage railways and some who simply admire our efforts to bring community spirit and something good to the village.

We have successfully developed a relationship with the three primary schools of Mountsorrel, Rothley and Quorn, in a program to educate and allow the children the opportunity to experience Mountsorrel’s history first hand.

In fact, only last Saturday we had two teachers from Quorn primary school on site, undertaking exploratory work prior to a school history site visit early next year.

We are also talking to Humphrey Perkins about them bringing a team of pupils to site to do a “mini” industrial archaeology dig.

In recent weeks we have replaced the missing one tonne capping stone and cleaned up the granite bridge on Wood Lane. This was a major logistical task and took most of the day to complete.

I could be here all day explaining everything! Full details are at our website www.mountsorrelrailway.org.uk. The site is updated most weeks with progress reports and news from the project, we have detailed pictorial reports on key events such as the bridge stone lift. There is also an independent YouTube video clip of the on going work and many photos.

There are also contact details on the website if you would like to volunteer on either the railway rebuilding side or with the ecology project.

We are a community project that is working hard to raise funds to support the ongoing work. We have our own volunteer fund raiser (contact details on the website), who can provide information if you would like to donate to the project.

Please can I point out that the trackbed is a construction site with all the hazards that go with it. It is not a public footpath so in the interests of your own safety, please don’t be tempted to trespass and go for a stroll! You can get a good taster of the work in progress by looking over the sides of the bridge at Wood Lane, or by volunteering on the project.

Best wishes to all of you,

Steve Cramp

With the cost of Gas and Elictricity constantly rising and energy bills getting higher than ever, how about a wind turbine in Mountsorrel?
Various locations could be used to site the turbine such as on top of the grassy hill area behind crown lane and bond lane (currently unused and would get lots of wind up there!), or located on the flood plain of the river which is unsuitable to build anything else on.
Several villages around the country have bought a wind turbine of thier own so that they can get cheaper energy and have funded it through donations and village events.
This would be a good idea to bring the village closer and make it more green for the future. I know if such a prospect came about, I would happily dip into my pocket and would help in any reasearch/fund raising for it.

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone else had noticed the issue with youths hanging around the memorial hall at night. Last night there was a group of them and one attempted to break in through a window, i did call the police, twice, but i think that was a bit fruitless.

Does anyone know why the lights in the car park are not used to prevent this happening? Because, lets face it, thats the only reason they hang out round there. Or does anyone know who to contact to get lighting used/installed? I don't mind them hanging about, but breaking and entering is another matter- and don't get me started on the local drug dealer who is using the memorial hall car park as his base.

The car park is used on some hot days for the local play group, so i do not think it is entirely appropriate that on the previous night, botlles were being broken, lads were urinating up the walls, and the drug dealer is going about his daily business without any intervention; all because the lack of light.

Any suggestions/thoughts?

Thanks

Hi All,

I live in the village and I am writing a book on the Mountsorrel Railway which used to serve the quarries of Mountsorrel. Part of it still survives as the conveyor run over the 1860 bridge.

I have been researching for the past few months and I have turned up far more info than I expected. I have spoken with local historians Noel Wakeling and Betty Berger who have been a great help.

What I really need now is to talk with other local people who might remember the railway or may even have worked on it. I want to include as many stories as possible of how the railway affected local life and the effect it had on the village. Use of any photos of the working railway would also be greatly appreciated.

I have already uncovered stories of how the Sunday School children rode in open wagons along the line to a house on Kinchley Lane as part of their Sunday School treats. It would be great if I could supplement this with additional stories.

This is not a profit making venture. All proceeds will be going to local charities which support historical preservation projects on the Great Central Railway. The purpose of the book is to ensure that the history of this fascinating railway system is documented for future generations to enjoy.

So, if any of you are “young” enough to remember the railway, or if you know of any one who used to work on the line please ask them to contact me by email at smcavalon@yahoo.co.uk or by phone on 0116 2301374 in the evenings or at weekends.

The “Mountsorrel Post” is running an article on the project so look out for that. Hopefully the article will also generate some responses.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Kindest regards,

Steve Cramp

Woods coaches have just launched a new inter-village bus service that runs between Loughborough, Barrow, Walton, Seagrave, Sileby, MOUNTSORREL, Rothley Lodge, Syston & terminates at Thurmaston shopping centre.

It runs Monday - Saturday at the following times:

Departs Loughborough 0700 & hourly until 1800.
Stops at Mountsorrel Green at 0737 & hourly until 1837.
Arrives Thurmaston 0755 & hourley until 1855.

Departs Thurmaston 0700 & hourly until 1800.
Stops at Mountsorrel Green at 0718 & hourly until 1818.
Arrives Loughborough 0755 & hourly until 1855.

HOWEVER at it runs along Slash Lane (!) then our village will be missed out completely if the road is flooded !!!!

According to the timetable, the senior citizens travel card is valid (in accordance with current terms & conditions) on this service.
(Which I take to mean that it will be free to use after 0930 Monday-Friday & all day Saturday.)

It rained in Mountsorrel on Friday, which isn't unusual for January. Slash Lane flooded on Friday/Saturday which, again, is quite common. The road under the A6 bypass flooded on Saturday evening as did the road linking the bypass to Budgens. This meant that traffic going to Leicester/Loughborough could only reach the A6 by passing through Quorn or right down the village until the garden centre.

The bypass is a recent road (relatively). Why were the roads that link it into the village built below the level of the water table? Why not build them higher and, if necessary for the flood plain to work, build then on stilts. The newish Syston bypass is on a flood plain but has been raised so that it doesn't flood.

Who was responsible for allowing two (relatively) new roads into our village to be built in such a way they become impassible when it rains? Rain isn't unknown in England - especially in winter.

Topics have dried up, (Carl has even resorted to suggesting prisons again... easy mate!) usage seems to skip days or even weeks between posters visits and new posts are almost non-existent.

It is the Moderators task to ensure lively debate is stimulated, topics posted for discussion and thought provoking issues (from the PC for example) posted for local / resident / anyone's return views.

I WILL resort to making a nuisance of myself with regard to the Hill Top Garage (for example), making completely irreverent posts about completely irreverent subjects and referring users to the Quorn Village Forum which is well used, topical, up-to-date and full of interesting points for debate. (Please note, I AM a Mountsorrel resident and proud of it, just for reference and fear of being branded a traitor!)
