Effective next week. He's taking a communications post with Gov. Corbett.

Amen, more power to him. I've known Dennis for three decades. He's a good addition to the Corbett administration. He surely will help keep our new governor honest.

The exodus of experienced and talented journalists from newsrooms is a shame. But good for Dennis. He'll do well.

His work on the follow ups to the Upper Big Branch mine disaster last April stands out. When other media outlets packed up and left that story, Dennis and his colleagues kept working it and helped hold Massey Energy accountable.

If you went around town and surveyed readers, asking them to name their favorite or most trusted newspaper reporter, Dennis Roddy would beat everyone by a mile. He is a legend in the local industry, and certainly the most distinctive voice on any page. I'll be sorry to see him go, and I'm sure the P-G is even sorrier.

Good luck to Dennis. He's a scholar and a gentleman and a damn fine reporter and writer.

Dennis' piece in yesterday's Forum section is a reminder of why we will miss his writing and reporting.

No one will deny Dennis can write, and it is like him to say it is all about the writing, meaning the writer, and there are no small news stories, even the one about the guy with his cat that was hanged and what is his editor and Dennis going to do about it (the best line in the piece, apocryphal or real, was when the editor replied, "Wear a black armband?").
Maybe it is less about the writer and the source, and really more about the news and the reader. Nobody will argue 3 cops shot dead or the 9/11 events are news events on a par with the hanged cat. We all like good writing, but maybe on a given day, or every day, we just want the meat and potatoes, what happened, what was the big news. Hell, I even like the inverted pyramid still, though it may not give the ballerina writers room to "create."
Good luck to Dennis becoming a spinner for Corbett, putting the words into the governor's mouth that make him sound sensible. That has to be hard after a lifetime of telling the stories of life, not of fiction.
And I admit my curiosity is piqued about the guy in the 1970s with the hanged cat. Was that part of a serial cat killer's spree, a conspiracy among a satanic group of cat hangers, or just something not even about the cat but aimed at hurting the cat owner, maybe from a jilted lover, a disgruntled customer, an irate offspring?
Either way, it ain't Watergate.

Any word on how he's adapting to being on the other side?

Party line last I heard was he liked the job. Gotta wonder about job security in any political situation.
But also gotta wonder about job security at PG and other news outlets. In last few years and even now at PG it's been threats of layoffs accompanied by dozens of buyouts in newsroom and elsewhere. Has been hiring but most have been half-pay, 2-year associates. Big talk down there but action has been erosion of quality of news product.

From Scaife's bidding to Corbett's, Roddy is back in his element (but watch your back Tom; Dennis has been known to bite the hand ...):

http://earlyreturns.sites.post-gazette.com/index.php/early-returns-20/53-post-gazette-staff/3783-roddy-back-in-the-news

"Roddy — a “special assistant to the governor” who penned much of Corbett’s budget address — had been an acclaimed reporter for The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Corbett spokesman Eric Shirk said Roddy’s knowledge and research skills aid Corbett and Cabinet secretaries.

According to an internal memo Roddy sent to DCED Secretary C. Alan Walker, he and Henderson had questions about PennFuture’s contract.

They both were “curious as to why an outside advocacy group would receive substantial taxpayer funding to promote awareness of (Act 129 of 2008, an energy conservation mandate) after having actively lobbied on behalf of the same legislation.”"
