Subject: Is it spreading?

The Trib made the Jagr/Pens saga the lead story on Page One. When Kovacevic was at the P-G he used to argue with the bosses that his stories had to be on Page One. Tell me the Trib isn't buying into this nonsense. Proper handling of the Jagr story was the P-G's -- do a page one box directing readers to the sports section. July hockey news above the fold in Colin McNickle's and Jim Cuddy's paper? Preposterous!

Can't say what should go on page 1 any day without knowing the legitimate candidates. Jagr story could make it there one day but not the next depending on what else you got. So it is impossible to say if it belonged there unless you had a list of the top dozen candidates, then whittled them doiwn by importance. But I wouldn't rule out a sports, business, features, entertainment or other story any more than a local, region, state, nation or world story. It's always: What else you got?

Sorry, but that's all that everyone was talking about for several days. It was Jagr 24/7. Go take a look at Facebook and Twitter to see how it exploded when the Pens withdrew their offer.
If you kept track of the top-viewed stories during that time, Jagr kept topping the Web site for The Trib, and I believe the P-G as well.
You may not think it's front-page news, but a hell of a lot of people did.
I couldn't care less about Jagr myself, but I think The Trib correctly reflected the interest of the audience on this one.

No, EVERYONE wasn't talking about it. Hockey fans were. That's why the story, which was a big SPORTS story, belonged in the SPORTS section.

If we're making news judgments based on Facebook and Twitter, then Lady Gaga should be on the front page every day.
