Subject: Trib -- Brand X no more?

Put aside the spooky editorial page and answer this question: Has the Trib become a better daily paper than the P-G? At minimum, I think it's a lot closer than it's ever been. The Trib shows more enterprise and has more experienced people able to pull off the stories. The P-G's staff cutting is apparent in the pages with too many inexperienced people.

Your take?

More a case of the PG declining in quality than the Trib getting significantly better. And, just comparing Monday's front page story selections, Trib editorial slant still carries over into news.

The Trib will never be a better paper than the PG as long as it is tainted by Scaife's self-serving involvement which compromises the entire paper's credibility, which makes it only logical to assume that even the most innocuous story has been prejudiced.

Judging by YOUR grammar, it looks like YOU'RE on the Trib editorial staff.

Re: "it looks like YOU'RE on the Trib editorial staff."

It looks as if you must work for one of those two crappy papers, too, because you do not seem to know that "like" is a preposition, not a conjunction.

Agreed. And at the same time, the Trib would never even be the paper it is now -- and likely won't continue to be in the future -- without scaife's involvement. In other words, the day his influence ends probably is also the day life-supporting subsidies for the paper end.

I'm still not sure why Dejan Kovacevic left the PG sports department for the Trib, but that was a big-time pickup for the Trib and a big, big loss for the Post-Gazette.

It is called money, trib has no union to deal with! Why do you think all the writers are leaving the post!

I believe the discussion was about the editorial content. Your desire to trash the PG over Dejan in this discussion is a stretch! Besides, Dejan will wake up soon and realize he just made the biggest mistake of his life.

How is taking more money a mistake? I don't get it. If that's what really happened why would it be a mistake?

So, it's all about the money? What about the desire to write for a publication with journalistic integrity and credibility? I guess that doesn't matter any longer.

The point of the original poster is that the Trib is finally gaining journalistic integrity and credibility

And my point is that the Trib has NO integrity or credibility! The main reason is that it is Scaife's toy.

And the Block's are bettter? Get serious! They ran the Press and now the Post Gazette into the ground! That's great leadership! Just like the Steel industry, unions and big corporations that don't know when to say no.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the Blocks ever "ran" the Press -- they just pretty much watched it die during the strike, leaving the weak sister P-G to somehow survive.
As for the Trib, do the editors still strike terror in the hearts of their reporters by saying things like, "We're going to have a little FUN with your lede..." Still scares me.

How many got laid off today at PG? Keep buying that rag! Bunch of old men and college students writing for them. Tell the last worker to turn out the lights! It doesn't look good, just like kdka radio. The old people are dying, can't keep turning out trash and expect it to sell. So the man is rich, whats that have to do with anything, you jealous? Ask the Block's if they like losing money?

Oh, goody. The right-wing nutball podiatrist who thinks the Blocks -- and anybody else who has ever voted for a Democrat in their lifetime -- are "communists" has finally found this board. When we want an opinion on foot corns from a "doctor" who can't spell, we'll ask you for it.

To the original poster's question -- Trib has many solid reporters, and it does many things better than the PG, including suburban news and, on many days, police news. The gap is not what it once was, but for my money, I still prefer the PG, especially on Sundays. PG's web products are a hot and sloppy mess right now ... we'll see if the long-rumored web redesign actually makes things better.

Nope, glad there are rich people. But you continue to ignore the fact that Scaife's involvement with the Trib's content has tainted the entire product to the point that the credibility, ethics and integrity are questionable and those are the most important issues concerning a "news" product! You lose those things and you got nothing! The Trib is Scaife's political propaganda toy. That's the ONLY reason it exists. So it will never be as good as ANY other paper where they cherish those aforementioned values. Are there good reporters and editors? Sure, but if they value there own journalistic integrity, they would be wise to dump the Trib. I say that with all sincerity, knowing all to well that there is no place to go. I'd rather do an honest day's work at Burger King.
