In sunday's Beaver County Times, there were two references to long time sports editor Ed Rose retiring. It also coincided with a different way that they covered high school football (which I kind of liked). Who is running the show in their sports dept now?

Chuck Curti, the ass't SE, has been put in charge. Don't know if he's been given the official promotion.

The staff was told last week the Times will not be filling Ed Rose's spot. They have just four sports staffers now.

Four full-timers are more than enough to cover local sports. The pro stuff is superflous.

"More than enough?" Not even close. They have two colleges and 20 high schools to cover (multiple sports). You can get by with four in the summer months, but it's not enough for three-fourths of the year. It doesn't have anything to do with pro stuff. Four people aren't enough to cover the local stuff and put out the section on a daily basis.

That's kind of what they have been doing even before Rose's retirement. The four staff guys do all the pages, and the four part-time guys - Allmann, Equels,Perrotto and Chiapazzi - write all of the stories and cover all of the events. The only staff guy who regularly writes is Bires, and only during Steeler season.

There's your problem right there. Why does it take 4 to do pages? Not with the technology available.

Well, you can only work 40 hours in a work week. Then there are days off/vacation. And then you have those guys covering events, too. If the Times isn't replacing their departed sports editor, then it doesn't sound like they're too keen on people racking up OT either.

From the sounds of it, you're suggesting no pro coverage and only a couple local stories per day in the section. So, what, run AP/McClatchey/Tribune/Reuters wire crap?

What's the point of even having a local paper with that mindset?

Any more than four local stories per day is too much. Three write, one edits and slaps a headline on it. Get in step. People are doing more with less everywhere. If those donkeys can't handle it, someone else can.

Other papers have been trying to do it.

Washington has been at 4 - with just as many high schools, three colleges and the Wild Things - for several years now.
But it's far less than ideal, especially when you're writing, doing layout and taking phone calls.
Add blogs and other things to it and you're getting a lot more for less.

Uniontown is now at two full timers as well, but they do have several part-timers. They also have less to cover in Fayette County.

Informed sources say the morale there is horrible after continued personnel and budget cuts and a continual revamping of the paper itself. It seems the life has been sucked out of the sports department and a sports section that was once very good.

The talent is there to for it to return as one of the best sports pages in the Pittsburgh region. Eric Hall is an excellent college writer, Chris Bradford is outstanding with the Penguins, and Chuck Curti has taken over the high school coverage from Utterback, which is a vast improvement. And their part-time guys (Perrotto, Allmann, Equals and Chiapazzi) are better than most full-time staff writers at other papers.

As long as the top person at that paper believes the people of Beaver County truly want to read about Lady Gaga, it won't matter who the talent is in there.

It will never change at the BCT. Calkins sent a message loud and clear to the staff at that once-amazing newspaper when they brought back one of the two men responsible for its destruction.
Sadly, Briscoe picked up right where he left off.

I'd take the staff at the WOR over what the BCT has left.

You certainly can't be talking about the sports staff. The only quality sports guy at the WOR is Mike Kovak, who got his start at the BCT. The Times sports staff, both full and part-time, is far superior to any of the suburban newspaper sports staffs.

Please. Lolley writes circles around Bires on Steelers coverage - unless you like all the rah, rah fan stuff. It's not even close.

Dugan does an outstanding job on the Wild Things coverage, but we're comparing apples and oranges there to anything the Times does because they don't have any of that stuff.

Compare the beats where there is crossover coverage and the OR writers are better.

As a follower of both papers, I will give the WOR the advantage in the Lolley-Bires debate. But any baseball coverage, at any level, begins and ends with John Perrotto at The Times (even though he is now part-time). He is far superior to anyone else writing baseball. As for high school coverage, Mike Kovak is equal to the high school beat guys at The Times, but in sports terms, The Times has more depth in quality writers with Curti, Allman, Equals and chiapazzi.

I think the Times has just four on-staff sports writers left: Mike Bires, Chris Bradford, Eric Hall and Chuck Curti. Everyone else is free-lance. That sports section was solid a few years ago when John Perrotto (now free-lance), Bill Utterback (now writing news), Chris Harlan (now at the Trib) and Jim Equels (now free-lance) were still on-staff writers. There might be others I'm forgetting.

I think this tells you how far the Beaver County Times has fallen:

In the days when guys like Perrotto and Prisuta were at the BCT, you'd get a story like this on a local kid who hit bottom and made it to the NFL:

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11281/1180571-66.stm

Instead, you now get rather Q&As like this from the BCT:

http://www.timesonline.com/sports/local_sports/campbell-q-a-this-is-a-business-trip/article_72174ab2-f947-5a45-ac0c-87f34d3616e4.html

Well, we might not know that Tommie was cleaning toilets at the airport for a time but we do know that he spouts cliches like "Once a Quip, always a Quip."

[> Re: BC Times Sports -- A Different Way, 11:22:45 10/14/11 Fri [1]

The Times is creating content in a different way as opposed to the Pittsburgh papers. A perfect example is the high school previews this week of the Aliquippa-Beaver game. The P-G and Trib did typical advance stories with predictable coach-speak, while the Times did a look back at the greatest games between the two schools. It was different ... and better.

The Times story:

I disagree. That beaver county times story was just a rehash of six old games between Aliquippa and Beaver. In no way is that creative. What did that tell me about Friday night's game? Nothing. It's a newspaper, not a history book.
