Subject: Nuttings strike again

Nuttings started Pirates Report a few years ago to generate positive coverage about their perennial loser baseball team. They hired John Perrotto, kicked him out after one season. Too negative. They hired Paul Ladewski from Chicago to replace him. Ladewski lasted almost two seasons. They told him on Monday that's he done. Not positive enough.

Maybe the coverage would be more positive if the team didn't lose all the damn time?

He's a bad writer?
Let's see if he heads to Twitter and Facebook to pout.

It took them two full seasons to determine he was a "bad" writer? This was all about not following the company line. Can't wait to see what sucker signs up for this suicide mission next.

Yes, he's a poor writer.
They didn't care at first because he was rah-rah, golly gee, ain't life great? Remember the ridiculous what have the Pens done since 1979 column?
However, he was unable to properly spin the disaster that was August, so, see ya.
His skills weren't well thought of in Chicago. He was ridiculed here and would make sure the Nuttings knew who in the press box spoke ill of the Buccos. That stopped late this summer. No stoolie? No job.

I'll light a candle and say a prayer for the next person to get this job. It's a tough, tough gig. I really believe, and I'm not trying to a wise guy, that their best bet would be to hire someone who is an just an out-and-out Pirates' fan rather than a journalist.

Is that you need to learn to stop voicing your feelings about the Nuttings in public. You just can't seem to help yourself, can you?

You knew what you were getting into Mr. Perrotto. Would you stop with the victim act here. It has grown tiresome.

At this point it is a toss up as to which the world has fewer of -- journalists or Pirates fans.

Wait, am I missing something here? The Nuttings own, so run, a vehicle for the Pirates, and someone is surprised it is a PR vehicle (ultimate goal is to make the Nuttings more dough by boosting the Pirates), an advocacy publication, little more than a house organ? Why are people surprised it is not a serious attempt at real journalism (without getting into a debate about whether any sports news, columns are real jounalism or just promos for jocks, team owners, etc.)?
Now, to be fair to John, he knows what I don't know: What the Nuttings promised the publication would be: journalism, out and out spin and propaganda or whatever. If they sold him on how it would be real news and it turned out they were sandbagging him, then shame on them. But on another level, is it realistic for anyone to expect a team owner to back something that won't whip up people about the team?
But as always in business, if you lie down with snakes you end up with bites. I know good jobs are hard to land, and it is rough out there, so as Sgt. Esterhuis used to say, "Be careful out there."

So is attacking Perrotto's justified criticism an example of a red herring, or a straw man? Both? Or is it just a smokescreen? I guess even the Nuttings have their apologists...Reminds me of Tunch Ilkin defending the Stillers!

We're just sick of John whining about it.
We know the Nuttings aren't a good family to work for, this isn't a shock.
We don't need John interjecting himself into someone else's situation.
There is professionalism. You get fired, you move on. You don't spend the next couple of years saying I need a break, the Nuttings stink, blah, blah, blah.
And you sure don't air it out on Twitter and Facebook.

The previous poster is correct. You seem to have a full deck of self pity cards, John. I think people are tired of getting them dealt to them. Maybe it is time to realize things have not worked out for you not because of others, but because of the common denominator, the self-proclaimed "Johnny Baseball"

Self-proclaimed? No. That nickname was bestowed by Paul Alexander.

Let's set the record straight -- I never gave myself the nickname "Johnny Baseball" or any other nickname. I am not an egomaniac as I think anyone who knows me would tell you.

I'll never bring up Bob Nutting but I can almost the people posting these things about me are the same ones who are friendly to my face. That's the thing about being part of the Pittsburgh media scene, so many people are disingenuous.

While Perotto might not have been wise to publicly criticize the Pirates after working for them a couple of years ago no one seems to dispute that he had good reasons to be upset.

Also, whenever this Pirates Report site comes up -- or whenever any Pirates beat coverage comes up -- other posters invoke his name and bring up his experience with the Nuttings.

What he posted on this thread was far from a flame against the Nuttings or the Pirates.

Get off his case.

This one has been circulating around the Times office since Friday. Not sure if it's Facebook or Twitter, but at some point, he will stop posting things like this. But then again, maybe he won't.

John Perrotto
I've been a sports writer since I was 14 and, tonight, for the first time ever, I blew off a game I was supposed to cover. I feel kind of bad about it but, then again, I don't.

You aren't kidding. There's one sick bastard who set up a fake Twitter account that he uses specifically to harass people. Guess he has a lot of time on his hands these days.

He had been attacking Perrotto. Now he's moved on to back stabbing Rocco DeMaro and Mike Vukovcan from Channel 2. He's insane.

LOL. Now he's on the radio-info.com board trying to promote himself for a job on The Fan sports radio. The dude has no shame!

The guy made fun of John Perrotto's wife on Twitter for not being able to have children and also said he had pictures of him committing a sex act with her. A real sicko.

He has no shot at the Fan.
He would have been one of a few to have known about her not being able to have kids.
And he's the only one who would make fun of it.

A despicable and cruel cheap shot, but exactly what you'd expect from someone like that.

Whoever it is has been attacking Perrotto for months now non-stop. It's reached the point of becoming ridiculous. Like Perrotto or not, you'd think it would end at some point.

That person's out the outside looking in and it kills him.
I guess a part-time radio gig that will be drying up soon wasn't all he thought it was.

The fact that it hasn't stopped tells you who it is. Anybody with a sense of decency would have backed off and let it go. Sad.
