Subject: Irrelevance as an art form

With all the possible Sunday topics available, the P-G's David Shribman chooses to write about this:

They're not even trying any more.

All I really had remembered about the War of 1812 is that the British burned the White House and Andy Jackson led them through the briars and the brambles, through the bushes where the rabbits wouldn't go. So this was actually instructive about how we tried in effect to annex Canada and it didn't work. So thanks for the reference. But this is typical Shribman, giving long views (200-year anniversary, though with current events making it relevant to us Americans and Canadians) and big thoughts, largely on history and national politics. So what is the mystery? It is who he is and what he does. He doesn't hang in Lawrenceville 'n' 'at. The byline here is Canada. They say it is important as thou goest through life to know thyself, and Shribman knows himself and his writing strengths and weaknesses and sticks to the strengths. So what's the problem? But while his writing has won him the big enchalada, the Pulitzer, that doesn't mean he is a good editor, manager, administrator, and I really don't like how he runs his newsroom. But c'est la vie, as they say in Quebec. He and the Blocks will run it into the ground or they won't. Obladee, oblada, life goes on ...

As convoluted and pointless as that was, I must ask: Do you write the "Munch" reviews?

Heaven forbid someone should dare inject a little educated historical review and perspective, particularly in light of the overall dumbing down of public discourse and media and the fact that both america and this region continue making bad decisions and mistakes based on a failure to understand the past.

Sending a reporting team to Somalia while ignoring Sewickly is inexcusable, but there are times when a newspaper can and should be a little metropolitan and worldly. Not every local column needs to be about the Stillers and pirogi.
