One or both might become a good baseball beat writer -- some day. My gut reaction is to say Pittsburgh sports fans deserve better. But, then I consider what the PG provides all of its readers and I realize this is just more of the same by PG management.

This move to stay the course, once again, smells like the higher ups had their fingers in the decision. The fact that SE Jerry Micco tried to hire someone in mid-season indicated what he'd like to do. Unfortunately, I don't think any quality baseball writer, with other options, wants to work at the PG right now.

On the bright side, by mid-June only the hardcore baseball fans will be still following Nutting's nine.

For those with some gray hair who read this forum, I'll just say we didn't know how good we had it in the 1980s when the Press and PG were firing editorial broadsides at each other on an almost daily basis. Yep, those were the days!

Now, the Trib and PG basically ignore each other. They behave like two blind paupers who every blue moon or so will bump into one another as each meanders under the guise of searching for a good story.

Former baseball blowhard Dejan Kovacavic is a really, really bad football writer. He might want to reconsider his future.

What's to reconsider? Word is DK is making more -- much more -- than any of the PG sports columnists. Granted, he's a huge disappointment as a columnist, but DK is laughing all the way to the bank.

I doubt he's laughing. That stuff he's putting out is dreadful. Reads like Jim O'Brien ... Didn't know he was such an egotist. Reeks of insecurity.

Word is he was tired of bumpin into Cook and Gene and Smize for decades, and the PG wouldn't make him a columnist. Maybe the PG in a rare fit of clarity saw what you see. So Dejan bolts for the Trib and more money and to be a columnist. Everyone is happier, though the PG did lose a daily reporter of some note. And the Trib can gloat about luring away another PG reporter/columnist, the last of which I can remember was Bill Steigerwald, who kept bumping into everyone everywhere, and is gone from Trib, I believe. But the main question is: Are the readers served by Dejan being a columnist, something he long coveted? It's your call. I read only his inaugural Trib column, and that was enough for me so I read nothing after, because it read something like this: Me me me me me me Dejan Dejan Dejan me me me me .... I'm just glad anyone is not unemployed. But rest assured, subscribers know what they are getting and not getting. And Gene is still thoughtful and funny after all these years, while Cook is way past a prime that was never so prime.

Remember there's no `I' in Dejan ... just a lot of me, me, me. Guess what, gang, I interviewed the Steelers today. Wow! They're bigger than the Pirates and I hear they're more popular! Look at meeeeee!!!!!!! Tomorrow, it's Sidney Crosby, and I get to remind everyone why Dave Molinari was the Penguins' beat writer and I was the backup!

There are a lot of quality BB writers who don't have other options. Downsizing has left a lot of good people looking, and the P-G has heard from a lot of them. Unfortunately, the P-G is not interested in hiring someone and not dedicated enough to give these two young guys the proper guidance on a tough beat.

WaPo has the same feature on its website--you can flip through an electronic version of the printed version--but it's free.
