Subject: Mark Madden reality check

Let's get a grip about what a "great" journalist Mark Madden has been through this Penn State mess. First, Madden did NOT break the story, despite the crowing of idiots all over the Internet. His April column in the Beaver County Times ran several days AFTER the Harrisburg Patriot-News had a great story saying who testified before the grand jury, etc. Madden just ran with what the Patriot-News had, without citing them as his source, and speculated that Sandusky may have retired because of it. No, REALLY? That's some groundbreaking investigation there.
Second, what in the name of all that's holy are other media doing making him the SOURCE of the RUMOR about "pimping" out the kids? Even Madden says it's just a rumor, he's heard that two columnists are working on it. Madden has no inside sources, hasn't investigated this, but he's being trotted out as the source of this "information" all over the place.
Is this what we've come to? Makes me want to say "30" to my journalism career.

Clear Channel feels the need to raise him from the dead, for obvious reasons.

But the question remains, where was the recent of the local media on this back when the reputable Patriot-News broke the story? In their apparent overarching concern to maintain access to Penn State sports news, are they somehow complicit in the cover up?

There's no media involvement in a cover-up. The media barely has access at PS anyway. The locker room is closed, player availability is limited during the week and Paterno's weekly pressers had become increasingly worthless.

It's a product of two things. Weak leadership at both papers, and smaller, inexperienced staffs. Jerry Micco is big on pontificating at APSE conventions, but he doesn't have good news judgment and isn't an idea generator. Say what you will about Russ Brown (Pgh Press) but his mind was always going and he always had ideas. Micco is the opposite. He's more concerned with being on TV and those weekly online chats. Kevin Smith at the Trib is a figurehead who isn't taken seriously by the staff. If there had been a scandal in the WPIAL, he might have been on top of it. But Penn State? That's beyond his comfort zone. Smith has never stopped being the Tarentum SE, they've just moved his office.

The other thing is the P-G has a limited staff and too many inexperienced people. Musselman doesn't have the skill set or work ethic to handle something big. He just wants to get by. The P-G now runs page one sports stories (Namath return, Great Race) written by stringers. There's a shortage of personnel, and the people they have don't have the experience to do major work. Their Pirates coverage is awful because they're using two kids just out of college. The experienced hands are entrenched on the Steelers and Pens beats and not available to take on a long-term project that requires some digging.

The PG had newbie Olson and Mauriello and Barnes, a buyout who is now a stringer, in Harrisburg. PG's Musselman is just a sports guy at Penn State. Then Mauriello headed for Washington. Not sure if they replaced her. But the PG few in Harrisburg have to ride herd on Gov. Tom "those on unemployment comp don't want to work" Corbett, the Senate, the House, the state agencies and courts and a partridge in a pear tree. The Pat-news has a staff, though I don't know how big it is, so maybe they got someone to baby-sit the Sandusky case, while the pg didnt. Seems clear the Patnews sources are better than pg's for whatever reason.
