Subject: No copy editors at the P-G?

The usually reliable Gerry Dulac hacked this one up today:

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger does not know how or when he injured the thumb on his throwing hand, but it could have come from trying to count all the times the offense has started quick.

Started quick? Not quickly? First paragraph of the lead story in the sports section and it has that.

The problem with the sentence is that the pronoun "it" lacks an explicit antecedent. "Quick" is grammatically legitimate in its adverbial use in the sentence. "Quick" is primarily an adjective, of course, but its status as a "flat" adverb (and an alternative to "quickly") has long enjoyed the approval of grammarians.
