Author: Why? (Cleansing the BCT)
Subject: Briscoe erases history

Keith Briscoe has erased all evidence of the BCT’s legacy of journalistic excellence.
Word out of Beaver is that Briscoe trashed dozens and dozens of plaques and awards dating to the 1950s that hung on a newsroom wall and sat in a prominently displayed case.
Those awards represented the hard work of several hundred newsmen and newswomen who passed through the BCT over the past half century; in other words, the history of journalism in the Beaver Valley.
They built the BCT into a great local newspaper. Briscoe tore it down. Now he’s cleansed the walls of their memory.
The motive is pretty clear.

Some psycho tried that at KDKA Radio once because none of the awards were won under her watch.
Guess what? No one ever knew it, but an employee kept them in her basement. The day after said idiot's short reign of terror was over, awards were back in.

That said, every journalism board needs to know what this loser did.

In speaking to several folks at The Times on-and-off and here-and-there, all of them consistently commented that Briscoe had kept a relatively low profile (as opposed to his first tenure) since his return. Why is he suddenly rocking the boat?

Perhaps they can put up a nice painting where the awards used to be. The empty space certainly isn't going to filled with any future awards because the only award the Beaver County Times is in contention for now is Newspaper Most Thoroughly Trashed and Destroyed by One Egotistical Man.

Briscoe thought it was embarrassing that anyone would be proud to win a state or local award. He was shooting for the big national awards! Sadly, the Pulitzer Prize for The Most Appearances by Andy Warhol on the Front Page of a Newspaper has eluded him.

Are there comic book awards? He could win one of those. Or an award for the paper that manages to get a huge sports photo on Page One the most often. He should get an award for being the only person in western PA still willing to publish Mark Madden's garbage.

Maybe he's just clearing wall space for these future alternative awards.

Some of those awards are mine. I'm not sure if I should thank him or scold him for throwing them in the trash. Those were won when The Times was a top-notch newspaper and I was proud to work there. Today, I'm ashamed to say it is my alma mater. Pitching those awards makes it easier for The Times to sever ties with me. Trust me, that's OK with me.

Of course, what Briscoe lacks in newspaper sense he makes up for in people skills..

Briscoe might have trashed the awards, but he can’t erase the legacy.
Their work will last forever in the microfilmed pages of the Times, along with Briscoe’s. History won’t be kind to Keith Briscoe.
He’ll go down as a classless, clueless corporate bureaucrat with a line of crap, who was booted out of Colorado Springs and slithered into Beaver County where he destroyed a good newspaper. His legacy is a fart in the wind.
