Subject: Wasted resources?

Does the P-G really need THREE staff-written stories on the Golden Globes, all covered from TV?

Does it really need Robert Dvorchak waxing nostalgic about old sports stories on video?

When a paper has a limited number of people and a limited amount of money, it really ought to use those resources more wisely.

Have you actually watched one of those Dvorchak videos? They're pretty damn good.

I have seen them. They're pointless. Sports fans want insights, like the Bouchette-Dulac Steelers videos or the Mike White videos on high schools. They don't care about Washington & Jefferson playing in the Rose Bowl a million years ago.

Unless you're telling people something that's relevant, it's a waste of time and resources. Newspaper people don't do TV as well as TV people do, so the selling point has to be relevant information they don't get on TV. Mackenzie Carpenter's videos are a giant waste, too. Who wants to watch a scary-looking middle-aged woman diss pop culture? It passed you by in the disco era, honey.

These things wouldn't even make the cut on Rick Sebak's shows.

The most tragic waste of resources is the waste of news space. After making the paper a skinny version of its once-proud self, the PG uses a half page a day in the month before Christmas hyping junk from its advertisers that would make "perfect" gifts. It's because the ad department insists the news department help keep its customers happy. It's a travesty and violation of long-held journalistic standards.
Then there are all the PG house ads, plugging space and screaming that there aren't enough people (or ideas) to fill the newshole.
Sad. Very sad.

The PG deserves most of the brickbats it gets because it got them the hard way -- it earned them.
But not this one.
Sunday is usually a very slow news day, so thank the news gods for the Globes, which beat out everyone else for tv audience.
So how do you overcover TV and movies? You don't. Of the 320 million Americans, 319 million spend all day every day watching TV and movies. Really. NBC/Marist poll ...
