Subject: Wanted: A savior who doesn't smoke

Even if you didn't know the dire straits of the P-G newsroom, wouldn't you be suspicious of this insane job description? I'd wonder what the hell the executive editor and managing editor do if these are the responsibilities of the third person on the totem pole.
The best part is the final sentence. It negates any pretense that the P-G is a "progressive" newsroom in any way: They prioritize use of "nicotine products" as a dealbreaker.

This makes sense. In the kinder, gentler, politically correct and financially troubled newsrooms of the 21st Century, the old, crude 20th Century days of ashtrays, sizable liquor stashes in reporters' desk drawers and all that stuff from "The Front Page" are a thing of the past.

It will also help candidates if their Bachelor's Degree is from the kind of Ivy League institution JR and the Shribster prefer.

It hasn't been amended to say "must have a basset hound or other dog as a pet," does it?

Looks like vaping must be all right.

This, my friends, is why I truly believe that at the Post-Gazette, the bought-out shall envy those who remain (if they don't already).

I remember when the P-G newsroom first went smoke free. Some of those who were inconvenienced by that edict talked about petitioning management over their concern about the excessive perfume worn by Jane Crawford.

In olden days, an editor who didn't spoke and drink -- particularly while on the job -- was viewed with suspicion.

Some young newsroomers and a few PG retirees who liked her personally are sad she left. A good bit of the newsroom feels the other way.
