So the PG sent someone to Crosby's cup parade and the Trib had a report from a freelance writer, but DK's blog offers exclusive content while others are cutting back? Got it.

Keep drinking that black and gold kook-aid, loonies.

Maybe that's why he was floating the idea of a capital campaign disguised as buying a foam brick for $50 - I think he got more push-back than he imagined and seems to have tabled the $50 donation in exchange for a foam brick.

These "fundraisers" are solely done by non-profits to raise funds yet he was considering it and some subscribers appeared to be very willing to pony up $50 that would go directly into his pocket.

This is a ridiculous argument. Why send a staffer to Canada to cover a Crosby hometown parade? It's a total waste of money.
Reporters can make the short drive to Cleveland or West Virginia.

Say what?? Are guy saying the PG and Trib didn't send their own people to Sid's parade? I don't get who you're ripping on here? Which one didn't send their people?

I'm not exactly sure what the OP is getting at either. Care to explain, please?

There was some criticism on here recently of the Trib sending reporters to cover the deadly floods in West Virginia and the historic championship parade in Cleveland.

Perhaps this has something to do with that. The problem, according to the OP, was that local papers should stick local in difficult economic times.

Anything sports-related sells in Pittsburgh, though, and Crosby always sells. I'll leave it up to others to determine if a freelancer is a better financial decision than sending a staff writer to cover a fluff piece.
