Jennie and pals admit they've been keeping this a secret from their own employees for a year.

That's too bad. I'm no Tribbie and I couldn't stand the old man's politics but you hate to see people get treated like this.

They're all probably better off pulling the plug at this point. It would be better than wondering if every day is gonna be your last.

The truth remains Pittsburgh can't support two papers and nowadays, with the whole industry taking nationwide, can't even really support ONE. This is a disgraceful way to treat those who haven't headed for the exits. It's the product of an incompetent team with a clueless "leader." Abandon ship.

It's amazing to me that more people in that building don't see this. It's like they're blind or brain washed to what's really happening.

That company won't even exist in a year I'll bet.

I'm no Trib apologist, but this doesn't say anything that indicates they knew this a year ago. Hate much?

Ed E., you must be unable to fathom what strikes me as an easily understood phrase.

"This is part of the latest phase of our strategic growth plan that our board of directors rolled out last year."

That means, as I read it, their "board of directors" were planning on dumping more people all along following the staff cuts of 2015 and the TTM properties sold or closed. It's a reflection on the fact the young executive in charge and her team are in over their heads, trying to prop up a diminished paper whose viability is, frankly unsustainable.

You claim you are "no Trib apologist."Then you add the defensive aside, "hate much?"

Apology (and explanation) not accepted.

No apology is offered. Not defensive at all, but just like in politics, I don't necessarily have to agree with a candidate to know when unfounded attacks are taking place. If you want to argue, fine. But then do it with facts.

I did argue, using the TTM quote you deliberately chose to misinterpret.

[> [> [> [> Re: Trib going down the tubes -- OK, Semantics, let's explain this, 11:27:16 07/25/16 Mon [1]

YOU are misreading whatever it is you're focusing on, and creating some bizarre conspiracy that says leadership was keeping this all a secret. The plan all along, as laid out by the corporate leadership, is to cut back in some areas, and try to grow others. I'm not going to argue the soundness of the plan, that's not the point.
But, there was no "secret" plan, as your conspiracy-minded brain seems to think. Corporate has always said that other layoffs/buyouts were a possibility, even after the first round was over.
The company has never said after that first round that layoffs were done and all the changes were done. They've continued to tell employees that other changes were coming, that this is an evolving process.
And do you think employees there didn't know that more buyouts/layoffs were possible? It's absolutely wrong to say that employees have been walking around brainwashed, thinking that everything is OK. If you say that, you have no idea what's going on at that company.
Ever since Scaife died in 2014, employees knew that massive changes were coming.
In fact, some were surprised that there were more buyouts offered last week, and not news that the doors are closing.
But to say that there was this secret plan to do this all along is just...I don't even know how to describe it.
It's not true, so please stop saying it.

It's just a hunch, but probably the next announcement after the buyouts will be that the Pittsburgh edition or the Valley News Dispatch or both are shutting their doors.

Given what's been happening to other newspapers around the country, it wouldn't be surprising at all.

And the Greensburg Trib is getting some competition in central Westmoreland from the Latrobe Bulletin, who do a better job on a tighter budget.

[> [> Spin, conspiracy theories and apologists -- Semantics, 21:05:18 07/25/16 Mon [1]

I only responded to Ed. E. Torial's views. There were added comments on this thread before I came in.

Obviously, a privately held corporation does not have to explain their strategies. Business 101.

My point was to defend those original posters who criticized the way the company was handling this. Ed E. claimed they were "no Trib apologist," then got defensive, implying anyone criticizing the spin TTM offered on the buyouts was speaking maliciously. What was that comment? Oh yes, "hate much?" Take note: criticism and hate are not synonymous.

I felt they were basically offering spin, trying to put a happy face on a very challenging situation affecting peoples' livelihoods. It happens all the time in other businesses. Where TTM is "growing" anything isn't being discussed. But since you mention it, are they growing the online sports talk operation? I seriously doubt that. If UpGruv is TTM's idea of "growth," that's a sad commentary.

Accusing me of creating a conspiracy theory is an obvious ploy to discredit my rather mild criticism, not to mention an absurd overreaction on your end.

Let's cut to the chase. Regardless of who is or isn't a "Trib apologist," your comments reveal a VERY clear view of "what's going on in the company."

I said it was spin. I'll say it again.

All you've done is offer a defensive perspective, with an added touch of annoyance. But thanks for the insight.

With no spin.
Yes, even the "brainwashed" employees admit it's a mess. (The quotes was to show my sarcasm.)
Everyone knows that The Trib (along with the P-G) is in serious trouble, and within a year or so, Pittsburgh will be, at most, a one-paper town.

[> Re: Trib going down the tubes -- Veterans Affairs, 03:14:20 07/23/16 Sat [1]

Here we have the combo of this "opportunity" being offered to anyone with 5 yrs' experience, and that it offers the chance for those affected to "retire" with enhanced benefits.

Thus, when an upstart digital venture hires a veterans reporter who has 4 years experience, little did we realize that such a veteran is a mere year away from retirement by this standard.

How soon before we see a Jim Cuddy byline, reporting from the county courthouse? Or tweeting, perhaps?

I thought Ms. Bertetto might be too young and inexperienced for the job when she was promoted. These comments bear out my suspicions. She apparently doesn't realize she's made herself seem oblivious and indifferent to the plight of her employees. That alone calls her abilities into question. That she's the head of a media company, of all things, makes her statment downright pathetic.

Serious question....how much longer will the Trib exist? Or TTM assuming they're separate entities in some way?? I can't see more than a year. Can anyone?

I hate to see any paper go under, and the Trib is certainly just any paper.
