Going for the "aw, he likes his Daddy" vote. Makes me think he is showing some leg (but not much, really) for a change because he is preparing to jump ship. He almost never shows any leg.

Anyway, the alternative is he is going for the "oh, he's so deep and comprehensive" vote, using, yes using, dear old dad to make the point that, what?, the world has changed? And in Daddy's day men were men and so were women, or something.

While his real point seems to be Daddy and his contemporaries were not only civilized but also honorable -- where have they gone, Joe DiMaggio, our nation turns its lonely eyes to you? -- it may be just a tad too sentimental and saccharine and cloying to imply they were the best generation, as Tom Brokaw overstates it.

But, with Trump exhibit A, nobody will argue the public conversation is way more coarse than it used to be in Shribman's Dad's day (though not unprecedented, as Hamilton and Burr even shot duel pistols at each other and one died).

But ask those who have known Shribman and all his works if they think he is as civilized and honorable as he says his dad was. Maybe even Shribman is feeling a little small in light of big daddy.

But I don't think that character, self-control, self-discipline and self-sacrifice have ended with Shribman's dad. The vast majority of guys and gals out there work a job, or more often than before, two jobs, pay their bills, try to get the kids through school, college, doctors' offices, and to put a little aside for retirement if they can, and do all of it often when they don't feel like it. And they don't even shoot at their neighbors. Character lives, even today.
