Subject: Talent Pool

With all the people leaving the Tribune-Review under one circumstance or another, wouldn't this be a great opportunity for non-TTM suburban papers like BCT and Washington O-R to pick up some quality journalists?

BCT in particular could use the help in sports, where a once formidable section has badly lost its way.

BCT could use some help in general news, since they've become little more than an uncritical mouthpiece for Beaver County Government after pushing JD Prose out of the way. But they don't think that. They think they're king of the outhouse. And any paper that makes a star out of the dreadful, tacky Scott Tady, whose skills at snarky self-promotion outdoes his journalism skills many times over, doesn't want to improve.

The BCT deserves to wither. Observer-Reporter is another story altogether. BCT should ever be that good.

What did happen to the BCT sports dept.? I see Bires is still there. Where is Perrotto? And Utterback? As much as he fluffed up a story it was better than some of what is printed now. And until I saw their pictures pop up on "Beat the Experts", I didn't even know Allman and Equals were still there. Prisuta left for greener pastures. Those were all the main guys when it was a great section. What happened?

When's the last time you picked up a paper? Those changes happened years ago.

What happened? They had massive cuts and dropped circulation. The same thing that's happened across the country. They couldn't afford a large newsroom staff. Prisuta left decades ago. Utterback hasn't been there in years. Ed Rose retired years ago. Chuck Curti left for the Trib. Allman and Equals have been freelancing for years.

Perrotto left after they scaled back the Pirates beat. He came back as a freelancer after his misadventures writing for the Nuttings' newspaper chain.

This is their newsroom contact page - http://www.timesonline.com/newsroom-contacts/table_7ad2b74a-9303-11e1-b450-001a4bcf6878.html

Per that, they have five people in sports. I've seen other bylines in the paper recently, but they're all tagged as correspondents, so I assume they're freelancers. That's probably the only way the sports department can do it - a small core with freelancers to do stuff they can't get to.

Did Curti take the Trib package? If he did, BCT could use him to run the sports pages again.

No idea. His Twitter still IDs him with the Trib.

Does the BCT really need him? I just looked up the APSE awards again and forgot that the BCT won a triple crown this year. They must be doing something right.
