Subject: Gary Rotstein, funnyman and Beltway Dave, stuffyman, on "jagoff"

Gary's alleged humor never comes close to the hilarity of the P-G opinion columnists and it never will. But still he tries.

Shribman's grudging acknowledgment at the end is a reminder that as the P-G recedes into the mists of Pittsburgh folklore, though probably not before the Trib, everyone owes its stilted, uptight VP and Executive Editor heartfelt thanks for worrying less about the declining quality of the paper and more about polluting its pages with slang not to his New England liking.

What's Rotstein's A-1 article this a.m. did was provide irrefutable proof to what anyone who knows Dave Shribman well already knew: the editor of the PG is hopelessly out of touch with the community he was hired to serve.

I knew that brief bit of humanizing reflected in the column updating the world to his father couldn't last. This is the real Shribman: self-absorbed and, for the editor of an urban daily, alarmingly out of touch with the world around him. Another reason to remember that amid the Trib's problems, the PG isn't in much better shape.

I could end this by calling Dave a jagoff. But why insult jagoffs?

It goes like this: Despite lack of any or big profits, the Blocks are getting paid big via salaries, nearly a half million a year plus benefits 10 years ago, when they had to report key salaries to the feds before they changed things and no longer have to report them.

Same with vp Shribman, though he surely gets less, and other bigwigs, department heads and whatnot. These guys are milking this for all the big bucks they can. Don't see Shribman leaving till the ship sinks unless there are health issues or something. It's the union and nonunion employees who have taken the brunt of buyouts, layoffs, and cuts in pay and benefits. You don't hear of the owners and top line getting pay cuts.

The Trib top editors are leaving, however, so the ownership and top officers are clearing out some big salaries, except their own. Looks like Trib empire is about to go out first, with a whimper.

The PG has been going to hell for years. If and when the Trib does "go out," taking UpGruv with them, the PG will will be a monopoly, which it has never been. At that point look for it to become an even bigger piece of junk. Of course it might still look good placed alongside The Incline. I think the PG and Blade are Block family indulgences designed to make John R feel important. It convinces him he's actually doing worthwhile work helping "save American journalism."

If he reads this forum, he probably can't understand all the hostile criticism of him, Shribman and the PG. How could he?

John Block only cared about hiring a Pulitzer winner in 2003, so he could "show Scaife," who had hired people away from the Blade to "show Block." And so he hired Beltway Dave. It had nothing to do with the calamity that has wrecked the newspaper business, but Shribman's wonkish ways have only made the PG's problems worse. He needs to retire and escape to New Hampshire. The sooner the better.

Shribman is an elitist and a stick in the mud. But I happen to believe he's correct about "jagoff." It doesn't belong in the newspaper any more than "mo-fo" does.

Agree. If anyone else other than David made this policy, I don't think much would be said. It's a reflection on the snob-oriented, nose-in-air facade he's established in his time as Executive Editor.
