Subject: CP addresses the city's newspaper meltdowns NOT!

http://www.pghcitypaper.com/pittsburgh/alternative-history-the-lessons-learned-by-the-demise-of-in-pittsburgh-newsweekly/Content?oid=1951358

He talks about the defunct In Pittsburgh, where he once worked, and how the alt weekly scene affected his writing and editing style. And he cites problems his looser writing style caused him when he went back to edit his hometown paper. To address meltdowns at the PG and Trib, he gives them a token shout-out in passing. Why? Because it was easier for Charlie to take a trip down memory lane than dig into what's going on right here and now. Don't want to burn any bridges locally, even if they're already falling down.

You shouldn't have even bothered, Charlie.

Charlie doesn't want to step on any toes. As long as he mouths the usual liberal battle cries, that's fine. But looking into the kinds of things Chris Potter routinely and fearlessly tackled? No, that's not for Charlie. So he gives a history lesson and hopes mentioning (in passing) the crisis at both papers in town will give him a break from the criticism he got on this board. The one thing he was right about: In Pittsburgh Newsweekly had run its course long before he worked there.

Potter made the move to the PG, Charlie wants the same. Doing journalism on a potential future employer, especially one that represents just about the only step up locally in his chosen field, would be professional suicide.

Well, Potter wasn't afraid to take on anything. That's the way real journalists work. Charlie is not even REMOTELY on Chris's level. Writing about problems in local businesses and industries, newspapers being a part of that, comes with the job description. Anyone lacking the guts to "do journalism on a potential future employer" at a time when major restructuring is going on at both local papers is obviously better suited for PR than journalism.

Actually, I think a CP article about the current turmoil and struggles at both papers, done right, well-sourced and fair to both sides would enhance, not damage a resume. Any reputable news organization would expect such a story and appreciate one that was well executed, even if it included accurate if unpleasant facts.

Surprised at the vitriol aimed at CP and Charlie here. First, who in Pittsburgh media could capably write about the two daily newspapers' plight who hasn't worked at one or both of them? That's a tricky conflict of interest that could look like someone grinding an axe if handled badly. Legitimately looking for an answer to that question.

Second, CP has its own troubles. Its new owner is about as far right as a publisher can get, which has to mean constant internal battles over coverage. And word has it he isn't exactly showering the CP staff with cash and prizes. The stringer budget is likely what it's always been: Small. Who wants to risk their potential future career options in Pittsburgh's tiny media circles by writing a critical piece for which they likely won't be paid all that much?

I know everyone on this board likes to lionize Chris Potter, but it seems to me that Charlie's been trying to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic since Potter sold out and went to the PG (and yes, "sold out" is exactly the right term). The fact that CP still exists as an alt-weekly at all is pretty remarkable.

Ethan, having worked at the Trib or PG does not preclude ex-staffers from writing about the problems there, so long as the former affiliation is disclosed.

And does anyone actually believe journalistic "potentiual future career options" exist in Pittsburgh's "tiny media circles" for anybody? Certain Trib refugees have escapes. Zito moved to the wingnut media, the only place she ever belonged. Prine got hired at the san Diego paper. Otherwise the journalistic destinies for most ex-Trib and PG folks, if they want to stay in journalism, are not in the Pittsburgh area.

I don't have a problem with Charlie. A good guy. But how many people around here would really care if CP vanished tomorrow? Alt weeklies are a thing of the past. Pittsburgh just hasn't gotten the memo.

Anybody see his CP blog entry detailing the PG's likely Trump endorsement and JR-Donald photo? That doesn't look like someoone afraid to take a stand, not to me. Go get 'em, Charlie!
