When's the last time you picked up a paper? Those changes happened years ago.

What happened? They had massive cuts and dropped circulation. The same thing that's happened across the country. They couldn't afford a large newsroom staff. Prisuta left decades ago. Utterback hasn't been there in years. Ed Rose retired years ago. Chuck Curti left for the Trib. Allman and Equals have been freelancing for years.

Perrotto left after they scaled back the Pirates beat. He came back as a freelancer after his misadventures writing for the Nuttings' newspaper chain.

This is their newsroom contact page - http://www.timesonline.com/newsroom-contacts/table_7ad2b74a-9303-11e1-b450-001a4bcf6878.html

Per that, they have five people in sports. I've seen other bylines in the paper recently, but they're all tagged as correspondents, so I assume they're freelancers. That's probably the only way the sports department can do it - a small core with freelancers to do stuff they can't get to.
