Subject: Trib Total Media to end Pittsburgh print edition, lay off 106

Sep 28, 2016, 11:53am EDT

Pittsburgh Business Times

Pittsburgh will become a one-newspaper town by the end of the year with Trib Total Media's announcement Wednesday that it will no longer publish a print edition of the Tribune-Review after Nov. 30. The newspaper, which has had a Pittsburgh edition since 1992, will go online-only Dec. 1.

The decision comes with an announcement that Trib Total Media will lay off 106 full-time and part-time staff, job cuts that follow the company's July announcement that it had offered buyouts to 400 of its 585 employees. Ninety-five employees, including many in the newsroom, took the buyout and left the paper earlier this month. It has several cuts and restructuring since the July 2014 death of its owner, Richard Mellon Scaife.

The company made the restructuring announcement as part of a plan to "re-emphasize local news in its key markets" and noted that print versions of its original flagship, the Greensburg Tribune-Review and the Valley News Dispatch, would remain.

The decision comes with a variety of the shifts and changes for Trib Total Media and marks a new chapter for Pittsburgh as a rare two-daily-newspaper market at a time of newspaper industrial consolidation.
