Subject: Trib Total Media to end Pittsburgh print edition, lay off 106

Pittsburgh Business Times

Pittsburgh will become a one-newspaper town by the end of the year with Trib Total Media's announcement Wednesday that it will no longer publish a print edition of the Tribune-Review after Nov. 30. The newspaper, which has had a Pittsburgh edition since 1992, will go online-only Dec. 1.

The decision comes with an announcement that Trib Total Media will lay off 106 full-time and part-time staff, job cuts that follow the company's July announcement that it had offered buyouts to 400 of its 585 employees. Ninety-five employees, including many in the newsroom, took the buyout and left the paper earlier this month. It has several cuts and restructuring since the July 2014 death of its owner, Richard Mellon Scaife.

The company made the restructuring announcement as part of a plan to "re-emphasize local news in its key markets" and noted that print versions of its original flagship, the Greensburg Tribune-Review and the Valley News Dispatch, would remain.

The decision comes with a variety of the shifts and changes for Trib Total Media and marks a new chapter for Pittsburgh as a rare two-daily-newspaper market at a time of newspaper industrial consolidation.

What a huge crock of crap this story is. The irony is incredible.

Massive loses by the Pittsburgh operation, has forced the company back to its roots in Greensburg and Tarentum, to "re-emphasize local news in its key markets".

For more than 20 years, these "key markets" were not "key" -- they were ignored. PTR drained the profits, raided the news staffs, and forced other staff cutbacks to free up money for PTR operations In short. they cannibalized two once respected, profitable, well-run suburban newspapers. And they did it with Impunity.

I know. I was there., When I retired in Greensburg in 2006, I was the 24th newsroom staffer to leave in 10 years without being replaced.

Now. lo and behold, we're returning to 1996.

Jennifer Bertetto couldn't publish a college newspaper. I bet she's got feelers out for another job now that Dick's plaything is all but finished.

I don't know if all the blame should be heaped upon Bertetto. She wasn't really dealt a winning hand.

No, Scaife left behind a giant pile of manure in the barn, but she certainly hasn't handled it well. She may mean well but she was out of her depth with something like this.

She's handled it very well. Outside of what the greedy kids are trying to grab, Scaife left behind a pile of money that remains. Enough to support a real business. One that does not support a bloated staff, outrageous spending, and pouring money into efforts that are futile. She has cut costs, cleaned house and focused efforts on where the industry is headed. It's like any other business today. Adapt to changes. Cut the fat and survive.

Wait a minute. Isn't the "pile of money that remains" an issue in the lawsuit filed by Jennie and David Scaife?

http://www.post-gazette.com/local/east/2015/06/10/Scaife-heirs-file-objections-to-trust-fund-expenditures/stories/201506100243

Jennifer has done little more than scrubbed the decks and re-arranged the chairs on the Titanic with the iceberg dead ahead. It's a sad time for local journalism but it's amusing to see die-hard Trib partisans remaining in denial. The spirit of "Baghdad Bob" lives!

It appears the options available were either "bad" or "worse". I'm not sure what could have been done differently considering the Trib's outrageous losses. 455 jobs in our industry is far better than none.

VND and Greensburg editions are both terrible.

They've been ravaged for 20 years; so of course they're terrible. But, in 1996 and 1997, the Greensburg Tribune-Review was recognized by PNPA as the best newspaper in Pennsylvania with a circulation between 50,000-100,000.

I think the banners are still hanging in the building.

A few people remember the 80s and 90s when Greensburg did topnotch local investigative work and deserved every award. After control moved to Pittsburgh and Greensburg got new editors, they started turning a blind eye to local matters that past Greensburg editors would have hopped on.

Not to mention that they shut down the printing press in Greensburg in the first round of layoffs. Are they going to truck the paper from Newsworks every day? Can't wait for the first big snowstorm.

Don't look now, but I heard that Newsworks is going to be sold off as well, which leaves the Falcon site (at the old Rock Airport site near Deer Lakes Park) as the only printing plant.

That is, unless Jenny B. wants to spring for a couple new press crews for Greensburg and find a whole new press for the VND. Not that either is likely to happen ...

From what I read, they'll print Greensburg and VND in Tarentum.

That's interesting, since there are no longer any physical presses at the VND any more. They were dismantled and sold some years ago.

Or are you referring to the Falcon site in the old Rock Airport? Technically, that's in West Deer Township, not far from Deer Lakes Park. I understand that's where most, if not all, the commercial printing accounts are going to be printed.

That would be it. The idea of printing in Greensburg never was mentioned.

Strange that the PG ran the Trib shut down story on the Business front page, and not even the lead story at that. Seems like it's on of the top stories of the day, certainly a milestone in the city's history, and warranted front page play.

I have only heard of Bob Cohn and Ralph Paulk in sports. Anyone else?
