Siri is obviously unaware, or refuses to factor in one simple truth another poster alluded to.

25 years ago Pittsburgh couldn't support two newspapers when it was just the Press and PG, who were under a Joint Operating Agreement (look it up). The Pittsburgh Trib was only born after Scaife wasn't able to buy the Press when Scripps-Howard decided to sell it during the 1992 strike and the PG beat him to the punch. His anger launched another of his obsessive Quixotic crusades, subsidized to the tune of hundreds of millions, to create a nonexistent impression of a growing media empire that made him feel good. That's all it was. Before all this, the Greensburg Trib was profitable.

Now with the huge subsidies that kept Trib Total Media afloat gone, they have to scale back. Digital is cheap on the surface minus print costs. But you need paid IT people, reporters and editors. But this isn't Huffington Post, which is still not gushing profits having built their brand on a tiny fulltime staff but mainly on unpaid bloggers. Where's the Pittsburgh Digital Trib revenue coming from? Oster? UpGruv?

It's true people who work at what remains of the Trib are frustrated and trying to see some way this hot mess can survive, but Jenny's Sunday letter to readers was far from reassuring. Who'd expect anything else from her? Whether you like the PG or not in its diminished form, it was never a vanity project. The Pittsburgh Trib and Trib Total Media were never anything but that.
